New Spyder owner having buyers remorse

I don,t know how many HD's you've been on but they're not the last word in motorcycles. My wife's spyder is far superior to the HD I am riding now. My friend's Ultra died without a whimper at about 5000 miles. If you let 1 vehicle and dealer influence you you're making a mistake.:lecturef_smilie:
:dontknow:I agree .I have friends with Harley's who have had many problems with their bikes.I am quite happy to stick with my Spyder.

I was very close to buying a 2012 spyder, but after reading this, their is no way now, I guess i'll return to the lcl. Harley dealer [a name brand motorcycle] not a new pop-up no name in motorcycles, WOW!....how sick, Good luck to you my friend :dontknow:.

It's not just this story alone, but put all the problems that people have had with a new spyder here also, and how they are treated by the co.:barf:

You're right... Harleys are problem free, great bang for the buck too! That's what I'd do if I were you....

Fading buyer's remorse....

Buyer’s remorse quickly fading…..

Thanks to everyone who posted. A lot of passion in some posts and certainly some in mine as well. I’m going to give you an update but I feel compelled to explain the back story of how I bought the Spyder for the benefit of anyone considering a purchase. The reason will be pretty clear:
When looking at these machines I researched all kinds of sites and saw both positive and negative things about them. Being a motorcycle owner, having been a farmer, and general novice mechanic I have experienced a variety of machines and mechanical issues. I also knew that it was unlikely that many of the satisfied people were taking the time to post. So it appeared to me that they were no more or no less reliable than any other complex machine.

Then I decided to see how I would need to go about ensuring I got a good deal. I looked all over the internet and got quotes from a few shops that were very reputable and competitive. I asked for quotes from places that I felt I would certainly buy from if the deal was right so I wouldn’t be wasting a lot of people’s time. Armed with an idea of what the bike I wanted was worth I went to my local dealer, Metro Motorsports in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Our salesperson Mike was right up front with me that if we were going to be test driving and he was going to be giving me a number, he wanted to know he wasn’t being used without having a chance to actually do a deal with me. So we shared with him where we were looking at buying and gave him an idea of what the price would need to be. I also stressed that being local had value to me so I would consider that when he made an offer. He was higher than our lowest bid but it was close enough and fair enough that we were satisfied with the deal. Both my wife and I believe strongly in doing business locally when you can.

Here is why this back story is so important. Having a great dealer has a value you cannot quantify when you have a mess like I had with this particular bike. Something I am sure all posters here know pretty well. Here are my results as of today:

Jonah who is the head of the service department called me and said that he and Jarod at Metro along with their certified Can Am mechanic spent a lot of time on the phone with Can Am. The mechanic decide to take all the little broken pieces and put them into a pile and send the picture to BRP. Apparently that convinced them that there was a heck of a lot more floating around in that motor than just a few pieces. BRP agreed to a new motor. (Base hit for customer service.)

In addition, Metro and Can Am agreed to switch a new unit sitting on the floor to a demo unit that I can ride while mine is laid up. (On to second base for customer service.) They delivered it today. It's a bright red one. Probably should have bought it in the first place. :-)

Jarod requested that Can Am provide an extended warranty on the bike. A BRP's request I cannot comment on that.

So to say that I am happy with both my dealer and Can Am at the moment is a very true statement. Really I, can’t say enough about what Metro did to help me out and I will also say that it appears that Can Am is trying to do the right thing as well.

So I think we are tee’d up to score one for overall customer service and a satisfied customer if this all turns out as hoped. If something happens this loaner bike though I am going to have to admit that I am cursed and give up entirely. :-)

Much of this only confirms what many of you have said and I appreciate your words of wisdom and how they gave me some hope that I wouldn’t have to get into a pitched battle with Goliath over this deal. I will keep everyone posted on the progress which is probably not going to be much for about a week or so. Both the mechanic and service manager are going to Can Am school after next week so my motor may or may not be fully installed before they go. Given that they have provided me a bike to take on the rides, that sting is no longer there.

I’m glad I bought from a dealer who really seems to care and am hopeful for a happy conclusion to this whole ordeal. :-)

Glad hear everything is working out for you, BRP as been pretty fair with Spyder support You just have to give them time to go through their process and its really important to stay calm.

It is great to hear you looking at a great outcome. Your dealer really stepped up quickly and it even sounds like BRP is going faster than usual in your case.

A loner from the dealer is also great.

Please keep us posted on the final outcome(s). :welcome: I will add contrats on the new ryde once you feel happy with the outcome.

Glad to hear everything is working out.I somehow thought it would as from what I know of BRP they are a reputable company. Its obvious the key to having no problems is having the right dealer.

It sounds like your dealer and BRP have really stepped up to the plate. I am glad to read this post. I will show it to BR1.

I am glad that you clarified that the 12 year old was a passenger, that is important, I am also concerned that this Spyder had no miles on it other than the ones you put on it from the dealer, my dealer test drove my Spyder for about 12 - 15 miles before i took delivery of it and he test drives it each time i take it in for service before he gives it back to me ( i jokingly accused him of just wanting to ride with my gas). Any others out there get their Spyder with zero miles on it/

Cruzr Joe :chat:

The 12 mile test ride at purchase is a requirement of BRP. The test ride must be done by a member of the dealership. After the test ride they have to hook up Budds to download the milage and certify the test drive.

I thought that requirement (instituted shortly after the 2010 RTS Premiere Edition was first delivered) was waived at the middle of the 2010 model year? Was it officially reinstated?

Great to hear that it's going forward. BRP is under new owners and they are trying to build a good relationship with the owners of Can-am Spyders. I have seen a change in the last few months. Good luck and keep us posted.

I've quickly learned from this forum that if you can't
wrench it yourself then to buy something else.

Which I guess places you among a very small band of Spyder owners.

Lamont, Scotty and you. Apologies if I've left anybody out. :roflblack:

If a first time occurance of something like this scares you off--you are probably better off going with some other brand.

So if a catastrophic failure like this happened to you, far from being scared off, you'd just suck it up and take it in your stride, would you?

Yeah. right.

GeoffCee,

I always enjoy your posts. You're one of the few reasons I decided to visit again after a (self induced) hiatus.

By the way, I didn't realize I should have gotten rid of my spyder long ago since I let my dealer do the wrenching.:roflblack:

GeoffCee: I don't usually come back when someone makes an attack on me. The quote you replied with, was an answer to someone who was not a spyder owner and perhaps not a spyder purchaser in the future. That post looked like an opportunity for someone to rant about the product.

I also note you conveniently left out the two links which were in the same post directing the poster to a whole bunch of positive information that was posted recently about the spyder.

If you are going to make a statement or criticize someone--why don't you do it in the proper context?

I would not let one bad post on SL deter me from purchasing a Spyder. Plus the big picture, the OP had a problem, told us about it, and appears to be on track to getting it solved. This appears to be a one time occurance--unless you can prove me wrong with other spyders disintigrating within the first 100 miles.

I would keep this info to yourself,.....find out exactly what the " lemon " law says in your State....you could be covered for a whole new Spyder wether they like it or not......But don't ask them what the law is and do not threaten anyone....or it's all over except for the lawyers and you don't want to go there.......IMHO Mike

Unfortunately, most states "Lemon Laws" do not cover Motorcycles or Trikes. Found out the hard way here in Florida, and after checking other states "lemon Laws", most do the same; "no Motorcycles or sport recreation vehicles"!! Sucks! :(
