Question about covers while trailering your Spyder and traveling

Grandpa Spyder

New member
I am going to trailer my Spyder on a Aluma TK1 later this month and I am going to the Palm Coast area of Fl. I will be putting the Spyder on the trailer backwards. What I would like to know is how many of you have covered your Spyder and with what type of cover.
I have a Nelsonriggs half cover I plan on using while traveling. Has anyone used this cover while traveling? And was there any problems with it.
Please tell me about your experience using a cover in an open trailer. Here is a picture of my trailer. Open to any suggestions. Thanks

One thing i can tell you, if you are trailering it backwards you better take the windshield off or it WILL break.

did that once with a snowmobile and i couldn't agree with you any more. what a mistake. thought the cover would deflect the air, but boy was i wrong!!!:cus: me!!! what a dumb move!

I was told not to trailer with a cover as the flapping of the cover can mark the RT.I met a couple trailering their RS on an Aluma trailer behind their Motorhome and it was uncovered.I guess if you have a really taut cover should be ok.

I would not recommend covering it. A flapping cover can scuff the paint, upholstery, and windshield. It can also damage the cover. It is easier to clean it after you arrive, than to buff it.

Never tow while covered unless you want to repaint and dont leave the WS in place it will come off and even if you dont mind replacing it the thing could kill someone when if come off

I use an enclosed trailer. Don't have to remove anything, and I don't need to cover it. Plus, I can carry spare parts, tools, and can camp in it too. After using my covered trailer for the last year, I'll never use an open trailer for my toys again. The trailer even doubles as a storage unit in the winter.

Don't do it !!!!!!!'

Hi
I thought I would give you a little info about
covering your Spyder or any other vehicle you tow
I had a custom car that I was entering in several car shows
here in the west I had it painted by Art Himsl
studios it cost tonof money to paint it
I loaded it up and was going to the Oakland Roadster Show
I was new at this I did not want it to get dirty so I put a
high quality cover on it.....
BIG MISTAKE
when I got to Oakland and took off the cover
It looked like I just took sandpaper to it
Dirt got under the cover and the wind flaping the cover
up and down did a number on the paint
Dont cover it put it in an enclosed trailer

Cover and go with no problems

I've used a BRP trailering cover for a couple years. hauled my RT all over the East coast on an open trailer. Absolutely ZERO problems. Just use a bungee around the base of the windshield to reduce the flapping.

A cover will scratch your paint. I have not tried this but have been told to use shrink wrap to protect a bike on a trailer.

I trailered my RT from SpyderFest to Oregon, backwards, in 2011. I lowered the windshield and towed it uncovered. No problems. Last fall I put my half cover on, covered that with a Queen bed blanket, covered that with a blue tarp and held it all in place with a PU truck bed, elastic. spider web. I hauled it like that from Oregonb to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Again, no problem. The cover was more for security in Mexico than anything. I'll do the same this year.

I would never go into Mexico much less take my Spyder down there. Life is too short to die in Mexico.

covering a spyder rt

i have hauled my new spyder rt around 500 miles now on covered no problem in summer, my wife and i go to flordia ever year and we take along the car and a goldwing on the trailer behind motorhome this year it will be the spyder and car on open trailer around 2500 miles in the winter the only problem i ever had was all the little buttons on the handlebars getting rain and grit whatever in them and them sticking and not working, so now i just put a couple wallmart plastic bags over them and duct tape so nothing can get in there . never had any trouble again. so u might at least want to wrap the cluster of buttons on handle bars with something.

Thanks again for the info, I think I will wrap those buttons on the handlebars with plastic wrap. This will be my 1st time trailering the Spyder. Did anyone cover their seat? and if so how?
