Do I Want To Buy 2012 RT Limited?

I've been looking at the Spyders for a few years now and every year I get scared off by all of the issues I read about. Starting getting the urge again in the last week or so and have two questions...

1) Has the quality improved to the point where the dreaded limp home mode has become a rarity? For reference purposes, we test drove a 2010 a couple of years ago and got to see how limp home worked ON THE TEST DRIVE. It then took four weeks for the demo model to get fixed. Not exactly a confidence inspiring moment for a sale. So, has the situation improved? Reading the board it seems marginally better but the support from BRP still seems rather awful. As a side note, I called BRP's 888 number to ask a simple question about the seat on the limited and they were really clueless sorry to say.

2) On a different note, I was (and still am) shocked to see that dealers all over the country seem to be slashing $4000-$4500 off list on the 2012 Limited. As I write this there are four dealers selling them (NEW, not DEMOS) for between $24,500 and $25,000. That is a great deal in my view - UNLESS there is just something fundamentally wrong with them this year and they are not moving. Couldn't get deals like this at this year last time from what I recall, so what is up? Sure wish that the 4 year entended warranty was still being given away for I would probably spring for it - if I can get over the concerns from question #1.

Not sure if any local NJ/PA dealers read these boards but I would love to hear the real deal from them. I am THISCLOSE to buying one. Love the bronze!

Thanks all.

Do I ?

The Spyder is the biggest technological breakthrough for scooters in years. I'd not be so concerned with purchasing one. Your concern should lie in whether or not you feel the dealer you purchase it from is up to the task - and - whether or not YOU think you will get the support from BRP you would hope to get.

Limp mode

The thing you have to remember is that many people post problems on this board trying to find a solution or just to vent. I have rarely seen people post how great their spyders are working, and I am one of those that don't give enough praise to my ride. This by itself will make it seem like the spyder is a terrible machine.

That being said, and I know I ride a RS, and not a RT. I have had my 2010 since 1/2011, and have gone into limp mode two times, both time were my fault, or easy to fix. The first time because I went too long without riding the bike, and the battery charge dropped. I put the batter onto a charger, and that fixed the problem. The second time I installed LED brake lights, and one went bad. Because of this the system went into limp mode to warn me that something was wrong with my brakes. I replaced the light bulbs (I always replace both when ever I replace), and no more limp mode. In both instances all I had to do was turn off the bike, wait about five minutes, and restart with no problem.

If you are looking at a 2012 I think you are safe in the fact that they have two years into the machine to tweak out the problems. I would not buy a first year model (of any product) due to how much these cost.

I too want to get a RT, and the only thing holding me back is I am still saving up for my down payment.

:agree:, no matter which owners forum you goto, BMW, Honda, Ford GMC etc you will always see more posts about issues than none issues. It would be a boring forum if everyone posted "went for a ride today and nothing happened". There are plenty of Spyders owners here that have thousands and thousands of miles on the bike, some doing 10,000 mile trips. I bought my limited in May of this year and have just under 5,000, I would have more if work and family commitments allowed. I would trust my Spyder on any ride, I would be going to Lamont's bbq if I didn't have to go to Germany for work. :banghead:

The deals where there a few months back, I got a fanatic deal on a 2012 RT Limited not too far from what there offering now but I did bargain hard (holding a baseball bat help as well). The new 2013 will be announced in late september so the dealers are properly trying to sell current stock, have incentives from BRP and want close a good summer.

You have to decide is there enough riding season for you left this year?, you can grab a deal now while there out there. Wait to see whats announced for 2013. If the 2013 announcements is record breaking it will do two things, make it worth the wait and or drop the price of the 2012 even more. If the 2013 are not that much different then maybe people will say I wont wait and crab whats left of the 2012 and push the prices back up.

Normally around December/January you can get great deals on left overs as the bike shops want the business and most will be wanted the latest 2013. I don't think you will find any good deals on the 2013 until you into the middle/end of the riding season and then your back where you started wondering about the 2014.

The other thing to take into account, buy one TODAY! ride like you stole it, hey the Mayans might be right about December 21st and no ones gets to ride the 2013.

I bought an RT LIMITED 2 months ago.have now done 1700 miles with no problems whatsoever. You need to know how to ride this bike correctly and buy from a dealer who knows how to put it together properly.Reading the posts on this forum you can learn a lot.
You are correct you can get a great deal on them for the moment. The reason is as well there is a $1500 rebate by BRP at present prior to the 2013 coming out plus the dealers letting them go cheaper to clear inventory. If you snooze you lose!!!!!!!:dontknow:

I've been asking myself the exact same questions....the greatest deal in the world is not a deal at all when it's in the shop or you have concerns about going on a decent ride because of the likelihood of being stranded...

Funny you would mention December 21st....part of me says, get one with lowest possible down payment and like the hell out of it until the 21st... flip side is to wait until the spring and use that down payment $$$ for some prepping... ;) if nothing happens, refinance, etc....I have seen some decent deal around here....the touring model looks sweet but I have to ask - is limited color selection by design or default? sort of the beginnings like what Henry Ford did with the Model A?

Possibility?

First I'd like to thank everyone for their great responses!

Regarding the rebate mentioned above...is this to the consumer or the dealer? In other words, if I buy one am I getting 1500 on top of my best deal?

The rebate is passed onto the customer in the price. That is one of the reasons you are getting lower prices.eg say the dealer was able to give you $3000 discount now he has the ability to give $4500.The reason I know this a is 2 of us were at the dealer yesterday with a friend who bought one of the last 2012 Limited in white from the dealer at a great discount. The dealer told us that he was able to do better because of the extra rebate as well as he was at the end of his stock of 2012's.When I bought from him in Early July I did well with him and got the extra 2 year warranty which was on at the time but did not do as well as my friend yesterday.

HEY!!! I have a 2010 RT-S and NO PROBLEMS!!!! Have 23+++ miles on her and getting more every day!!! Had on 09 RS and no problems. Put 15+++ mile on that one. From the get go took these machines on long trips, NO WORRY. You get gliches with ANYTHING mechanical/computer type stuff. Get your ryde and enjoy it NOW while your still young enough to do so.:ohyea:

Cue music from HeeHaw: "Gloom, despair, and agony, Oh My, deep, dark, destruction, excessive misery, Oh MY, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all, gloom, despair, and agony, Oh Me......" I thought I'd buy a :ani29:, and then I read the posts....you get the idea...:joke:

There have been a lot of issues posted. I am one of a few that has had one each of 2008, 2009, 2010, and now a 2011. Two RS's and Two RT's. There have been some issues, but I have a dealer who also is great and knowledgeable when it comes to service. The most my :spyder2:, have been in the shop is two days.

The 2012 seems to have less issues than previous models--but we still hear about them cropping up. I would wait for 2013 information. But it is still six of a dozen, one half the other. Lower price, newer things??

Test drive and see what you think. Only you can make the decision.

That's where I bought my RT from, they set it up nice, but didn't offer anything free except windshield cleaner.

So the RT SM5 advertised for $18,900 is now a negotiable $17,500??
When did this rebate take effect and how long does it last????

DannyG

if it helps, I have bought two RT'S this year and not had a limp home nor any real issue at all on either. Never posted to that effect but like others have said, when you get on any forum, you hear from people seeking answers on specific items but that does not mean that everyone has those issues.
