The Opening Ceremony in London

Missing the point

You are missing the point badly on this one. Disney world contributes millions of dollars every year to feed starving children. And how do you know that the people who bought a Spyder don't also volunteer in soup kitchens.

The point here is that these are the OLYMPICS and you have invited people from Zambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe just to mention a few of the countries with athletes trying to bring attention and pride to their countries while the brothers and sisters of those very same athletes are praying they will win not for a medal, but because then they will have food.

It's like inviting a homeless man over for dinner and when he gets there you say ''we could have fed your whole shelter today but we decided to buy these $200,000 candles for ambiance instead''.

If you can't see this than you are ignorant.

Are you trying to say that England contributes NOTHING to help aid the sick and starving across the Planet?? :dontknow: :gaah:

Guess I'm ignorant. :dontknow:

Thats like just having your family living in your house when you could make room for some homeless person.

Thats like feeding your family when you could eat at the shelter and share your food.

Thats like going on vacation at Disney when you could donate that money.

Thats like celebrating the 4th of July with hot dogs and fireworks when we could feed the starving.

so on and so on. Where does it end, I give to charity, like lots of others.

But I don't regrudge anyone celebrating something every four years like the olympics.

Last time I checked

Last time I checked, the Olympics were not founded, created, or started to show off your countries excessive wealth and have nothing to do with fireworks.

This is MY opinion on the opening ceremonies. Not the Olympic games themselves. If you truly believe that pushing light up beds around an arena and shooting off fireworks is a good representation of what the Olympica should stand for, good for you.

HarryPottar,

If you feel guilty that you have not invited the less fortunate into your home for a meal, it is an easy thing to do.

I know that writing a check to some foundation is easier. But you have to look at yourself in the mirror, not me.

Bob,

If you believe that just because England has helped the hungry in the past, that they are exempt from helping today and in the future, then the years have erased more wisdom than they have contributed to.

Winning friends and influencing people. Thank you for calling a bunch of us ignorant, is it possible, and I'm only spitballing here. The recession heavy country of England is doing it's best to entice folks to travel to England and see the great sights so that it can help to feed its own folks? Is it also possible that there are millions of dollars that already go to starving countries, countries that allow the food to rot in the harbor because they want to keep the population poor and hungry? I agree that feeding the world is an important priority, I just don't see how they are going to impress the world with a couple of sparklers.

You proved my point JCSmoke

Thank you. The Olympics are not about impressing anyone and that is exactly the problem.

You know who would be impressed by sparklers... The children receiving a food package

As my wife and I watched the opening ceremonies, I couldn't help but wonder how many starving people from the exact countries standing there with flags waving, could have been fed
with the money used to flaunt how wasteful we can be.

Fireworks??? Children all around the world without food and ''Great'' Britain is shooting thousands and thousands of dollars into the sky. Anything to appease her majesty.

I've often thought the exact same thing on the 4th of July here in the USA. Can you imagine how many hungry and homeless right here in the states that could benefit from using all that fireworks money for them?

Reminds me of a M.A.S.H. episode when Charles Emerson Winchester III bought expensive chocolates for the kids in the local village... dropped them off anonymously... then later was angry when he learned they had been sold and others were eating them. When he tracked down the man who had sold them he learned a good lesson. The man explained that the children barely got enough food to survive.. so things like desserts and candy were extras that they can do without. He sold the candies to buy enough rice to feed the orphans for a month.

Didn't watch the Olympic opening... just not really my thing.

But here in the USA we like to blow stuff up and show off how awesome we are......because we're obviously the best of the best of the best at everything.... So I don't expect any changes to fireworks shows here in the US anytime soon.... but it's a nice thought to consider skipping extravagant fireworks displays and helping the needy instead. Then again.. many seem to be of the opinion we should just tell them to 'get a job' and walk right past them.....

I figured you just turned 6 years old, because you are about as mature as my son :)

I've said it before: I may have to grow old, but I ain't growing up without a fight! :roflblack:

You've picked two fights in as many threads... :dontknow: Why are you "batting a thousand"?

We've got a real friendly bunch of folks in here who like to drop by and visit. It's a shame when a sourpuss shows up and tries to start a ruckus! :gaah:

Feeling guilty?

Ratingan,

If you are feeling guilty riding a $20,000 motorcycle, that sucks.

I am enjoying mine.

If what you heard in my statement that shooting money into the sky to impress a bunch of rich people, means everybody should sell their motorcycles, you must really be dealing with guilt issues.

Again: cCreating a platform where people of all colors, religions, countries can compete on equal grounds is amazing.

The opening ceremony sucked. And it was a waste of money that wa used to try to impress us because we have let them believe that that is what impresses us. If we all spoke up and voiced ourselves, telling the world that we are not impressed with fireworks, but would rather see a short film showing the millions of children we just fed instead, guess what 2016's opening ceremony would look like.

And yes. We should pay off our debt before hosting tax payer funded firework shows here in America to. If you can afford to shoot off fireworks in your back yard, more power to ya. But when our country is 15 trillion dollars in debt... Fireworks are kinda irrelevant

Josh...Josh...Josh...
So now you've brought this pissing match to a point where somebody has got to ask you, "What great altruistic act have you performed to help your fellow man? Have you made personal sacrifices so that others may live?"
Put up; or shut up!
Don't pick on "Sparks":lecturef_smilie: He's helped a lot of folks in here; myself included!
