There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. GPS Install - steering bolt stripped head

Thought I read something about this - taking the two bolts off on the steering column so that I could mount the GPS bracket. First one came off no problem. Second one - stripped the T45 head so now it is not biting in. Cant get a bite with a EZ-out either. Interesting, the bolt is torqued in but the head seems soft as butter. Any ideas short of drilling it out? Thought someone posted using JB Weld and adhering a torn socket in there but can find the thread.

Ideas appreciated.

So the photo rotated in the upload. The T45 screw head that is to the lower side of the GPS cable hole just opposite of the one that is already out (which would have made this a 30 minute job the way it was going but no good deed goes unpunished) - the T45 head itself is stripped. Very well stripped now that I have continued to try to get it with EZ outs. This is torqued to 30 ftlbs. Can not get at it with a vice grips. Thinking the only options are drill it out (which means removing the other screws to extract the stub, drill further and get a better bite with an EZ out, or just JB Weld an old T45 into the stripped head and crank it out tomorrow.

And Seriously, BRP, who designs a dash with a hidden hole to sucks up anything you drop next to the steering yoke and channels it into the engine compartment?? THen you have to remove ALL the Tupperware to search for it. :banghead:

Got it!

ok - drilled a 3/16" hole for a #2 extractor, then hammered in a #3 straight wall extractor till it was in there good - took an adjustable wrench in there and cranked it out.

good.

I was going to tell you they have easy out specificaly for allen head bolt but you got it awesome just future referance sears has them in metric and standard sizes

THE UNREMOVEABLE BOLT PROBLEM

IMHO, whoever put that bolt in may have crossthreaded it and just kept on going till it stopped and that's why you couldn't get it out in the first place...Professional mechanics....aren't always if you know what I mean.;...Mike

Ya- sorry - I typed it wrong. They are Allen on the steering. But T45 instead of the Allen would have been less likely to strip :)

So the wiring harness feeding through the hole was another "fun" experience. I noticed in the video someone shot they were pretty good showing everything along the way - but the wiring harness just appeared. Guess you gotta leave something for the imagination on mods :doorag:

I did pictures and everything on this a while back. 7 mm Allen to take out. Cloth around the handlebar openings to prevent dropped screws from going into the engine compartment, etc. search by my name for my post --- knarfoh.

But too late now. My install was different then yours maybe -- installed KewlMetal gizmo bracket for my TomTom Rider 2.

15 minutes max to install the bracket. Whole job hour or so. All from tips from others who proceeded me and posted here.

Why would you use a Torx on an Allen bolt? Just curious. $3.45 for the 7 mm hex bit from Advance Auto.

The first part was my error in calling it a T45 when telling the story - it is Allen head. Had they used a T45 or T50 bolt instead of the Allen head I may not have had the issue with the Allen head stripping out so easily.

My apologies. I didn't read down far enough in all the posts. You do know you can edit your own posts and correct any misstatements (or spelling, etc.) you make? The bolts are 7mm and interestingly a lot of hex (or allen) wrench kits skip that size. Lot of other posts about that in this FORUM including mine (read here).

Pictures (read here) and (read here).

Thanks for the links. Your posts were the ones I was thinking of when I posted the original. I know you can edit but after they have been up or responded to I hesitate to change them as that can make the thread confusing if someone responded to a point already made in the initial post then the next reader sees it all differently. Trying to keep it coherent.

Thanks again for the links. The GPS is all in and working with XM radio, weather, and traffic. Now the wife wants it on hers :banghead:

New signature should read: 2 Spyders = twice the expense, four times the fun on mods.......
