Traveling to the Big Apple (Ozone Park, NY) .. HELP!

Traveling from Statesville, NC to Ozone Park, NY pulling a utility trailer. Picking up a Suzuki B-King. Ozone Park is near JFK Airport. Will be going through Newark, NJ, through the Holland Tunnel to Ozone Park.

All I know about the Big Apple is what I've seen on TV!! I'm use to driving in traffic being from Atlanta but I'm thinking driving through NJ through NY City to Ozone Park will make Atlanta look like a drive in the park??!!

I've checked out the area with my Garmin Map Source software and have looked at the area using Google Earth. But, there is nothing like advice from someone who's been there done that?

Anyone with any advice .. things to look out for .... etc.?

Instead of using Holland Tunnel and Manhattan. Use Verazzano bridge. I95 I think Exit 13 or 14 and beat Manhattan traffic. Its horrendous.

Use beltway and save yourself at least 1/2 hr if not more. There will be signs for JFK just follow.

Thanks ............ Had another suggestion on another forum to do the same. I wasn't looking forward to being trapped inside the tunnel for any length of time!! I will be going through on Saturday so I'm hoping the traffic won't be as bad.

I lived on 107th street off 101st avenue in Ozone Park for twenty years--I absolutely agree with baldev's advice.

I realize things change, but let me know where exactly in "Oz" you're heading and I might be able to advise better...

Yeah, Sam, I just saw on Google maps street view that they knocked down the house next to where I grew up! I had visited recently for my mother's burial...

...Although it looks a lot different than what I'm use to in our little town of Statesville, NC, the area looks pretty good.

Well, houses are usually no more than 6 feet apart, and every other street is usually one way (and usually not the direction you need to go), and the area's cultural diversity changes neighborhood by neighborhood. You may find it difficult to park on the street near your destination. Have some quarters with you for parking meters (and tolls on the way down, actually), and don't freak out if you have to pay 25 cents for 15 minutes! Read the street signs about when you can and cannot park. (They're not kidding.) There usually aren't meters any on the "streets," just on the "avenues." There is, however, "alternate side of the street parking" in some areas: On even (calendar date) days, you can park on the even (house address) side of the street, on odd days you can park on the odd side. (No, I'm not kidding. Read street signs c a r e f u l l y after you park.)

You'll be fine in that area, but I would still lock my car when it's unattended if I were you. If you have the Spyder (is that what's in the trailer?) lock it up with a cable to a telephone pole.

Treat it as an adventure, and it'll provide you with some memories and stories to share!

Thanks, Bro.! Nothing on the trailer (open utility trailer). I'm picking up a bike I bought on Ebay (2008 Suzuki B-King). I will pick it up around 10:00am Saturday morning in "Oz" and do a quick turn around to head back to N.C.

I am treating it as I always treat my trips to pick up bikes ... as an adventure! This will top all of the others, however. Really looking forward to it. I just wanted to be as prepared as I can and the info I've picked up on the forums will prove invaluable.

I love New York! But I don't think I'd love it much riding a Spyder through it. They all drive like nutz there and you can't carry anything to defend yourself if you had to so just watch your back. It's an amazing place but it's also full of whack jobs.

I must agree with you. The cops there are so stressed out that every STOP is an adventure. Pathetically rude and power hungry. I know some will question me on this BUT the experience Ive had is, they are always on the edge and we all become victims. :chill:
