Gel coating? and trailer re-spray

After trading my Goldwing for the RT, I still have the trailer, which is in excellent condition but it is cel coated to the wings titanium color.

I purchased it that way, I have no idea what gel coating is ( i did google).

Now no self respecting spyder lover could be seen with a sexy lava bronze spyder pulling a titanium colored trailer :lecturef_smilie:

So I need to get it color matched, any suggestions?, would Maaco be an option I see adverts for whole cars for $400.

I want to be budget minded but I also want to have a good job done. ray:

Instead of having to do a color match, it would be great if we could find out from BRP who their paint manufacturer is, as well as the color numbers used on the Spyders. Not sure who one would have to ask specifically for the information but, it would make life easier for all of us. Just my 2c.

Gelcoat is an epoxy or resin based pigmented coating applied to a fiberglass mold as a protective and high quality finish. It's bonded to the substrate and generally a higher quality and more durable finish than paint but it can be chipped and damaged.

You can't change the color of your gelcoat but you can paint over it. An experienced body shop will know what to do to paint your trailer. It'll cost many hundreds of dollars to paint but if you decide to do it it'll look good.

Go to different body shops in your area and ask for a quote.

Those are initials of the paint company's that have matching colors as well as the paint code number.

Out of the three, I would recommend PPG.

If you find it for the black........please.........let me know

The wing as gone but this is what the trailer looks like, alloy wheels, carpeted with divider, interior lights and spare wheel.

Chrome bar and support stand, pulled great behind GL just had to remind myself it was behind me.

I would love the RT-622 but thats $4k, this was under $3k new (with all the extras and gel coat color match.

Follow pro10's advice, but here is something to think about.....IMHO the only time you need an exact color match...and I mean EXACT is when the new paint is actually touching the old paint, like spot painting or partial painting a fender etc....if your trailer is a shade off no one and I mean no one will ever tell not even a PRO that it's not the same color......and you don't even have to use BRP's water based paint to get it so close you can't tell......ask a real pro about what I just said.....Mike......or you can spend $1000 and get 100% perfect...you're call

It needs to be close but not an exact match, the lava bronze as a slight metallic look to it, but I agree close is good enough.

It was not a perfect match to the GL but no one could tell. Also I might see if I can sell it and buy the RT-622.

By the time I had the re-spray cost it might be better to sell but don't know yet, I hear that the trailers some times go on sale.

Blk Max has a production date of Dec. 2010 but didn't hit the market until June 2011. As has been said, unless I'm needing a panel repaint or something like that.....either # should work. My trailer is a legit 2010 and you'd be hard pressed to see any difference between it and the Spyder.

Thanks for the leg work and there are deals out there on trailers. Not so sure about Lava however. As a color it probably hasn't been on the market long enough. I do know where there's a good deal on a Blk trailer if someone is in or going to be in So. Cal.

US Paint makes the OEM paint for BRP, see their website, guy at their office that deals with getting it made up is named "Ryan". Nice guy, prices are fairly steep.

We painted her R-622 blue one to match the new Spyder and the cost of the Lava Bronze paint that I bought from a auto paint supply house was $90. The body shop charged $400 to apply it. We also applied bed liner to the front of the trailer to act as a stone chip preventer.

My R-622 went from black to white but since the Pearl White (Vegas white in the USA), is a two stage deal, the cost of the paint went up to $136 and the application cost was $450.

Sounds like the $500 to cover your Gel Coat finish is a good price. I would invest in some kind of front protection though as the Spyder seems to throw up more stuff off the road than my Gold Wing used to.

Thats good to know, $500 seems like a fair price.

When I purchased the trailer I had the heavy duty front cover, it press studs on and as soft backing.

This will save you some labor costs and may result in a better paint job since there will be little or no masking involved, which may cause less than perfect end results. I did this and basically gave them only the body and lid.

Nice idea but trust me when I say a man should know is limitations, I would end up with tons of parts left over.

In the long run it would properly cost me more to get it fixed, there's a story in there as I screwed up a very, very simple oil change on an ATV and had to pay a dealer to fix my mess.

When it comes to mechanical stuff I'm totally useless, wimpy software engineer by profession.

I would pop for the $ 500.00 I think your old trailer is sweet! Everyone with a check book can buy the BRP model but yours will be different.:thumbup:
