Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Work In Progress - Bed Lining the Spyder

Bytemi

New member
I decided to do a test piece of the bed lining on the Spyder. I thought my cowl was a good place to start. I will take you step by step through the process and tell you about the problems that I found and how to avoid them. I am also going to give you names of products that I used but I am in no way saying these are the best products to use.

FYI:

  1. Make sure you really want to take this step, there is no going back.
  2. Make sure that your surface is clean and free of grease.
  3. When you start spraying, start off the panel and then move your way onto it in a steady motion to avoid bubbles.
  4. Work in a well ventilated space.
  5. Make sure if tape the reflectors that you use a razor to seperate the bed liner from the tape.
  6. Don't stick your finger in the wet bed liner! VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. Don't start this project outside if there is rain in the forecast!
  8. Put all bolts and small parts in a zip lock for safe keeping.
  9. DO NOT USE LINE-X, it is too heavy and will not look right! Use Dupli-Color or Duraliner (which comes in different colors).

Step One – Clean your surface with Dawn detergent and dry well.
Step Two – Use 400 grit sandpaper to lightly rough up the surface of your panel.

Step Three – Clean with wax and grease remover.
Step Four – Using Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter, lightly spray the entire surface of your panel. You will now wait 5 to 10 minutes for the adhesive to dry.

Step Five - You are now going to apply a light coat of Dupli-Color Truck Bed Coating. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for it a fully dry.

Step Six - Apply two more coats waitings 5 to 10 minutes between each coat.

You are now done and you have a bed lined Spyder. I will post additional pictures of the Spyder when she is completely done. Right now I am trying to figure out how to take the other panels off. :D

This is how the cowl looks back together and on the Spyder.

Can't wait to see it done - it will save you a ton of money doing it with rattle cans .

Did you scratch your other panels ? Why are you lining them instead of just painting them satin or flat black ?

I saw pictures of people that did the whole trucks that way .

I guess I could paint it, but there is less room for error with paint and it can't be scratched by a rock that gets kicked up with the bed lining, but still gives me the phantom look that I am looking for.

Well that and basic insanity has lead me to this decision.

No I have not scratched the other panels yet. Going to continue working on it this weekend. It will be done soon.

I thought you might have gotten into an accident or something and that is why you are painting it.

Good luck and make sure you use tha adhesion promoter ! You need that stuff to stick.

Keep the pictures coming - I think it will look sweet - I love the all black look .

I was gonna suggest to plasti-dip them first. It has similar look to bed liner but 100% reversible. You can try on easier to get to panels first and get a sorta preview of your finished spyder. ^^
People use this to black out chrome, refinish rims, stripe, bumpers and even do their whole car.
It has textured matte black look.
Comes in many colors but home depot would have matte black only in rattle can or liquid, cost $6.
I was gonna do all my red panels but settled on doing just the rims and grey hardwares and wrap the panels in carbon fiber.

My husband suggested the dip also, but we stopped talking about it for some reason.

You really got me think'n now, see what you've done

After Coz posted about paint'n his RS dash bezel, Teddy had me do the Dash Bezel & Speaker Grills to match Teds Red Sled & they came out really well & I'm happy with them. Now I just can't stand all the gray metal, like the windshield support, peg castings & handlebar covers:sour: After seeing this, I'm thinking all these castings would look really good done this way:thumbup: Thanks so much for post'n the step by step how to :2thumbs:

Interesting idea. I did my trailer with that same spray. Pretty easy to do and to get a good finish on..... But it can be messy.

What's this plasti-dip stuff some are referring to?

This looks fantastic!

The main question I am getting from my neighbors and co-workers is:

Will this hurt the resale value of the Spyder? What do you think? Will I have a hard time selling the Spyder after this?

The plasti-dip is basically the stuff that they use on the handles of tools and is completely removal.

I don't know, I guess it just seems weird for me to rubberize my Spyder and I like the flat black look with a little texture, I think it really give the Spyder something. See now I am reconsidering again. Dang it!

I am glad I could help. :) I figured nobody else was going to attempt to bed line their Spyder and if you like the flat black look it is a good option and easy to do. Seriously, make sure you don't spray directly onto the object to begin, it took me an extra 3 coats to get rid of bubbles :banghead:, it is all a learning experience.

A well ventilated space is very important too! We had to evacuate the house after my husband bed lined his fender wells on his truck, that is a mistake we will not make again.

This really does look good and might be a great option for those who want the matte black stealth look without paying the BRP price for the panels.

Also might be more scratch, ding, and knick resistant too!

If I didn't already love my yellow GS I would do this!!!

That was actually the deal my husband made. If we attempted this and it did not turn out right, he was going to buy me the Phantom Panels.

It's sure looking as if there's no Phantom panels coming to your household soon! It's looking SWEET! :2thumbs: I really like the idea of it being tougher and more scratch and ding-resistant than normal paint too!
Resale value... :dontknow: There's always going to be somebody out there who'll love what you did with "Billie"; but it's too early to start thinking about the next project. isn't it??
