Muffler bracket retaining bolt.

Just a word of caution. While washing th RT today, I noticed that the muffler was just hanging. The nut had come off the bolt holding the muffler in place. The bolt was lodged between the muffler and the bracket. Hard to know how long it had been that way. So, I know what I am going to do. I will get a locking nut tomorrow and set it back up right. And...I will check it periodically. No telling what would have happened had the muffler broken off running 70 mph.

Happened on my '65 Triumph...made a heckuva racket! Killed the muffler, too. One of the "forgotten" aspects of periodic maintenance and pre-trip checks is checking critical fasteners for tightness. BTW, for thos new to the game, regular Loctite is fairly useless on muffler and exhaust pipe connections, because the heat breaks the bond. Same goes for Nylock nuts.

So I am going to double nut it and put some silicone on the bare threads.

I just noticed the exact same thing on mine. The bolt and washer were in place but the nut was MIA. Going to a longer bolt and double nut as well.
