• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

It Broke!

Saturday morning about 0730, temp about 42, visibility clear and a million. I'm on I-10 on the way to my dealer for a 21,000 mile service (about 60 miles into the 214 mile trip). Doing about the speed limit.

All of a sudden RPM drops to about 3500 with a lot of extra noise and the speed drops dramatically. Get to an exit and pull off, by now the "Check Engine" light is on and scrolling across the display. No smoke, no oil trail or leak, no funny smell. :(

It has now become obvious that I'm not going to ryde the rest of the way, so call wife to have her and son hook up trailer and come get me. Call dealer let them know what has happened.

Jump forward several hours. Have arrived at dealer and the mechanic is diagnosing problem. Looks at BUDS readouts, among other things they show the rear cyl isn't functioning.

Now he shows the mark of an experienced mechanic. Pulls rear cylinder plug. It's wet, but color looks great. Runs compression test, result = 0 lbs. Hooks compressor to cyl, air coming out of muffler. Looks like it swallowed an exhaust valve.

The tear down starts Monday, so we will see.

Hoping for the best.

Ron

What dealer did you take it too/city?

And The Verdict is.....

Engine teardown is completed.

A keeper on one of the exhaust valves on the #2 cylinder slipped up on the valve stem allowing the valve to drop down and strike the piston.

Now for the good part... the valve was driven back up, the stem was slightly bent and lodged in place with an opening about 1/8th of an inch. Didn't hit anything else, or cause any additional damage!
No debris or any other damage. Basicly need new valve train, cam, & piston.

Talked to Desert Dog this afternoon. All of the parts, except piston, have been received and the piston is due any day.

Should be back on the road soon, and am looking forward to getting a few miles on the engine before we launch for SpyderFest.

Good to hear, hope they get you up & running sooner than later

:pray:And pray that it is all ok & trouble free for you

Sounds like you have an awesome dealer and things are working out nicely. Hopefully you'll get the last bit done and be on the road again soon. Let us know! Great news!!!!!:thumbup:

Glad to hear the damage wasn't worse. Dropping a valve is usually even more devastating. Hope they get you back on the road real soon.

ronv,

I may have missed it; but, had your spyder's valves been checked prior to the problem? I only ask b/c the valves on my spyder were checked at 12,000 and I just had it in for service at 18,000 and the dealer said it would be a good idea to have the valves checked at 24,000. Previously he said he had checked spyders with 30,000 miles and more that were still within tolerance. Seeing as how you had a problem, I'm thinking I'll go for the valve check like the dealer suggested at 24,000.

Good luck with your repair.
