Stock Rear Tire

I went to a Michelin

I went to the Michelin Hydroedge tire 215/60-15 for $103 for my 2008 GS/RS. It has a 90,000 mile warranty and is a great rain tire. Have only put a few miles on it, but I am expecting to get well over 50,000 miles on it.

SWITCHING BRANDS OF TIRES ON YOUR SPYDERS:...THE REASON BRP HAS KENDAS ON THE SPYDERS ISSSSSSS THEY MADE A SWEETHEART DEAL WITH KENDA....BRP GETS THE TIRES AT A GREAT DISCOUNT AND SINCE THEY ARE THE ALMOST EXCLUSIVE SELLER THEY CAN SELL FOR WHATEVER PRICE THEY WANT....YOU'LL NOTICE MOST DEALERS WILL NOT TOUCH ANYTHING BUT A KENDA REGARDING A SPYDER....AND BY THE WAY YOU CAN'T BUY THE TIRE FROM KENDA..THEY WON'T SELL IT TO YOU.....I SWITCHED TO CAR TIRES FOR THE ABOVE REASON AND THE FACT THAT CAR TIRES ARE RATED MUCH HIGHER....THEY HAVE TO BE TO SUPPORT A 3000 LB. CAR...THINK ABOUT IT....YOUR KENDA'S ARE RATED FOR 700 TO 925 LB. SPYDER....MY CAR TIRES CAN SUPPORT A 3000 LB. CAR....THIS IS A NO BRAINER PEOPLE.....DON'T BUY ANY OLD CAR TIRE BE CHOOSEY READ THE SPEC'S AND CHOOSE WISELY ....AND YOU WILL GET A 100% BETTER TIRE FOR A LOT LESS MONEY.....AND A MUCH SAFER TIRE TOO....IT'S RATED HIGHER....I'M DONE...RIDE ON.....MIKE

To each his own... but a few points....

First off.... typing in ALL CAPS is considered YELLING and generally frowned upon. I usually won't read posts that are in all caps.... ;)

Second, "Rated Higher" doesn't mean 'better' for the Spyder.

Many have used non-Kenda tires and report great results, but this doesn't automatically make the Kenda a bad tire, or the car tire a 'better' one. A concern is dealing with the sidewalls as a car tire will have a much stiffer sidewall to support the extra weight, where the Kenda may not be as stiff as car tire- and *may* be part of the design in mind by BRP to accommodate the unique handling of the Spyder. Just a thought.

Another concern is tire pressure. Using aftermarket you basically have to guess. We all know the Spyder doesn't like much pressure in the Kenda's --- 17 front/ 26 rear. I believe most running car tires are running much higher.

I'm still sticking with OEM tires for now as the price isn't bad and they have handled anything I've thrown at them. 7,000 from a rear and 12,000 from the fronts is fine by me.

Now, that being said-- I'm more open to car tires than I used to be - might try some someday after more reports come in on using the various brands.......

Just trying to give you a heads up on what has been common netiquette for a good 20 years. It's probably the most common 'rule' of netiquette
I don't make the rules, but do understand this one as all caps are actually much harder to read for most.
This site is really friendly - on some sites you'd get torn a new one for posting in all caps..... nojoke

To each his own--- keep on yellin' if ya want....... ;)

Good looking tire tread. Has anyone else used this one that you know of?
I think 50k miles is really expecting a lot.....even on a car I've never got anywhere near 1/2 of what the 'warranty' miles are.
I also wonder if they'll honor the warranty since you're using it on a motorcycle. What I've found out about those tire warranties is they just pro-rate what it's worth-- so it's really not that important IMO. If you only get 30,000 miles on it they'll pro-rate it and give you like $40 off a new $100 tire usually.

Please post back after you get some miles on it.

The 2012 versions of the OEM tire is priced at 150 also.....I paid 97 out the door at Discount tire for a Faulken 512. I got 14200 and 14500 on my OEM rear tires before switching to Faulken, and my first set of fronts, I got 20K. I'm right under 35000 right now and I found a set of fronts at my dealer for 53 each, and I have a spare Faulken all awaiting install. :D

tires

rock on joet82, another spyderlover has seen the light......if some one out there is less computer challenged ( i barely can type :roflblack: ) maybe a voting chart could be created similar to the one that was done for the oil preferences, where you could just vote without a post ....something like oem tires vs. car tires ???.....how about it...winter is toooooo long....mike.......ps firefly has told me not to use caps under penalty of....."tear me a new one" ??????

Yes Syclemom's husband posted about this tire she has, the last I knew, over 30,000 miles on it and he said he expects she will get at least another 20,000 miles on it. He said that they have used this tire on traditional trikes and it is all they will use. He said it is a great rain tire and has had absolutely no problems with this tire on her RT.

I talked to a tire dealer about the tire and it's warranty and he said it will not matter whether it goes on CanAm Spyder or a car, the warranty will still be honored. Of course the warranty is pro rated like any other tire or a warranty on anything. The use that you have been able to get out of it is considered when a warranty claim is submitted.

:agree: I paid over $200 for Avon Rear tire on my V-Star $185 for a rear tire on a bike (Canadian price) is a steal IMO. It is also 2 ply sidewall and engineered for a Spyder!

I'm at about 43K miles on my original front tires. I just put on my third rear tire at 43k. My last tire was a car tire and it lasted nearly 30K miles, twice as long as the Kenda and half the price. I now have the same tire as Joe on the rear, a Falken.

After much thought about a new rear tire I decided to go with the stock Kenda. My next question, is the dealer the only place to get one or can a better deal be had somewhere else? I tried to find one online but my stock tire does not have a "model" name on it. The only ones that pop up are dealer, and used ebay deals.

Have you been riding this "winter" I wish I would have . I used to live in hanover park but moved to palatine a little over a year ago .

All winter long. I ride any day any temp. Not a big fan of cold and rain, but either or and I am fine. I am in Palatine quite a bit too, love the beer selection at Durty Nellies.

Falken ZIEX ZE912 225/50R15 91V

+For both grip & distance, go with a Falken ZIEX ZE912 225/50R15 91V.

Ride on.

Though there is a bit more to it than just the number of plies, they are all 2 ply sidewall. The difference is in the tread where the Kenda is 2 ply and everything else is 4 ply. 2 ply allows the tire to bow up in the middle of the tread, especially at freeway speeds (centrifugal force) and if you're running more air pressure (like most of us do). This tends to wear the tire out in the middle leaving a fair amount of tread on both sides.

Yes, the Kenda is engineered for the Spyder. But that doesn't necessarily mean you can't get better performance and more miles for the same or less money.

OEM TIRES

Ron, you just went in a different direction from my post ...but I agree 110 % with what you are saying also.....why people feel they have to follow the company line on absolutely everything is beyond me.....but I suspect more than a few who defend the Kenda's are using NON-BRP RISERS and that is a no - no......Mike...Rock on Ron
