What's wrong with this picture(s)?

I agree, even hard core riders have fallen under the Spyder spell, but there are always a few who simply think that any trike, no matter how cool is not a "bike".

Cool. I love you guys! For listening to my blabber over the past 7 months, I think you all deserve an award..... :firstplace:

I'm sticken with the Spyder come hell or high-water now! I may even just go ahead and send the dealer another $5,000 cash and tell him that it's non-refundable......This way I would NEVER back out!

Well, stay tuned......

I ordered my machine a year ago from last March without even a test ride. A month or so later I took 2 10 mile test rides. Then I moved to Seattle from Michigan and my wife went and picked it up in mid November. I finally got to ride it two weeks ago when I went back to Michigan for a vacation.

It was nothing but pure fun. I rode that thing every chance I got.I think its great.

But the real reason I m responding to this thread is to mention to Derwin about my wifes experience with the Spyder.

She has ridden motorcycles off and on since `82. But she never felt really y confident on two wheels. After the snow went away back in Michigan, she started riding our Spyder around town, then to work(a whole 3 miles),then she ventured slowly further from home, with the grande finale being a 40 mile shopping trip. Now SHE is the one who doesn't want me to have it shipped out to Seattle. She loves driving it. She has no problem with the lack of "leaning" ability. We did have two ATV s and I thing driving those helped with getting used to driving the Spyder.

I can understand where you re coming from,Derwin. Spending that much money on something you are not completely convinced you will like leads to doubt. I had the same feelings. But after driving it,all those fears melted away pretty much immediately.

As far as gas mileage goes,we haven't checked it yet. But I can say one thing about YOUR Spyder. I am(almost) positive that there is no other difference between the two models other than the automatic clutch. So if all the gearing is the same, one would expect pretty much the same gas mileage, dependent,of course,on driving habits.

Hang in there,my friend :2thumbs:

Derwin, after reading all this I'm thinking of taking bets as to when you will post about quitting the Spyder again. :D ;) :joke:

Seriously, I have a few things to add.

First is my agreement with a few of the people who have been responding to this thread and their concern that you will end up unhappy with the Spyder. It would be a shame for you to put off buying something like the Piaggio while waiting for a Spyder if the Piaggio is what would ultimately make you happy.

Second, I remember after I put my deposit down on a Spyder that I also had times of doubting whether it was a smart thing to buy. Gas mileage, the economy, the cost of the Spyder, etc. pointed to buying an economical used vehicle instead of something that doesn't get great mileage, isn't drivable for 3 or 4 months out of the year, isn't able to haul much, etc. In the end, I stuck with the decision to buy it and I am very happy that I did. It is a fun way to get around, it has tons of power, I get some of the same sensations as riding a motorcycle and I feel safer on this than on a motorcycle or scooter.

One point that I didn't catch is if you've ever test ridden the Piaggio? I would think that you would need to do that to help you decide which is the best way for you to go.

If you're worried about safety then get 3 wheels - it don't matter if its a BMW, Goldwing, or a Spyder. The safety factor of a 3 wheeler is unbelivable. Try running off the edge of the Parkway with a 6" drop off on your 2 wheeler, or hitting some oil, or better yet see who survives a blowout at 60 mph. The Spyder with it's ABS & traction control might be the best out there in rain and snow.

While the Spyder won't get the mileage of your scooter your talking about maybe a dollar difference between fill-ups. Most guys are getting mid 30's.

unless,of course, its powered by a V- twin produced in Wisconsin.

Sooo..

even though i have doubts about the entire thing as a whole, yesterday i put my deposit down on a yellow SE5 due in end of Aug, early sept from Gargano's in East Haven, CT.

I think i will battle with this decision for a while because i will always think about having 20k in my bank account or a pleasure toy. But i just keep thinking i am young and only live once...

The way this world is going spend it spend it spend it :2thumbs: Have fun, live life! Who cares?! Just think - you can save some money on putting gas in the car, it's the ultimate cool ride, you have safety & speed, chick magnet - you won't regret it!

Friend of mine at work who rode it asked if he could borrow it so he could pick up girls. :2thumbs:

Smy - I take it from your other post you work at sikorsky. Crazy place. You drive the spyder on the merritt? that looks like it would be a sweet road for riding on a sunday.

Yup - I work there. I drive down 110, not the Merritt. Still, it's better than the car! Only thing that I don't like is I have to dress up but I've been sneaking jeans and bringing a pair of shoes. Depends who is in when it comes to dress code and I haven't ridden it yet all dressed up - that's gonna be funny. Congrats on your new ride! We've gotta drop ours off for the first service tomorrow night. Taking it to Lake George next weekend.

Everyone keeps talking about leaning. The difference between a bike and the Spyder is that you don't lean with a bike but you do with the Spyder. The bike leans and inertia pushes you down on it. You have to lean into turns on the Spyder to stay on it. Like driving your car and leaning your head into it while making a turn.
As for the Spyders mileage, it sucks. They gave power at the expense of mileage. I get better mileage on all my other bikes than the Spyder gets. It's too bad as they could have designed it to get better. Even my Ultra gets 42mpg. The looks and specs made me think it should get about 50!!!
If you want good mileage with great handling and OK performance then get a Kawasaki Ninja 250. I get in the mid to upper 60's with that. They're cheap too, about 2 grand for a used one. Or a Buell Blast gets about the same mileage but has more power. I'm selling the Ninja and getting one of those next week. The handling on a sport bike it fun when you throw it into a corner. Similar to what you're experiencing on you scooter, but to a grander scale.
I'd say keep your scooter and wait for your Spyder. I don't think the SE5 mileage will be much different because it's still a 5 speed. Not a full automatic.
Have you gone to a dealer and ridden their demo? If not you really need to. Then you'll have a better idea what everyone is talking about. And remember that anything you ride in the wind is fun, but some things are funnier that others.

Yeah and if I hear one more guy say the airfoil design on a Spyder is "Dirty" I'll vomit! The Spyder was designed in air tunnel technology. Don't believe other companies trying to sell you airfoil windshields and such tellin you the design is not right. When comparing the Spyder to a Goldwing, the Goldwing is like a tractor trailer.

It's not the design responsible for the bad mileage it's the engine - if they didn't sacrifice the tranny for reverse, we would have a 6th gear and the engine wouldn't be turning 4000 rpm at 55 mph.

I filled up yesterday and got 36 MPG on that tank. I've ridden to Valouurt and back (1,900 mi) and have 5500 miles on the bike now. NEVER had less that 34MPG.
