There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Hi All,

This is my first post. I've been lurking for a while, collecting info before I pull the trigger on buying a Spyder. I kinda have my heart set on a sport model, but could be persuaded to try an RT.
If anyone can offer advice to a first time buyer, I'd really appreciate it. I'm looking for info on model year differences, what to look out for, etc...

Thanx in Advance!

:welcome:and Im all about the RS, but hey Im in the odd catagory here, feel free to ask any specifics via thread or PM.

:welcome: It all depends on how you want to ride. If you like agressive sport riding with killer looks, than the RS is for you. If you want a touring model to take long trips and extreme comfort than choose the RT. Your pocketbook is also a factor you might want to consider as well.

Sometimes people buy an RS and add a ton of add ons to try to set it up for touring and comfort and wind up spending the same amount of $ if they would have on a RT. Make sure you know what you want before you buy. Good luck.

:agree: and :welcome:

:welcome:Nice to hear you're getting ready to take the plunge! I ride an RS and love it. Mine is an '09 and I chose that year because I could get better financing than with an '08. I don't think there's any difference between the years though. I personally like the sporty stance and look of the RS. I'm pretty aggressive, so it fits me. Not that I would turn away an RT if someone gifted me one! winken.gif One for in-town rides and one for touring would be FANTASTIC.

Happy shopping and let us know what you decided on!

Best,

Welcome to Spyderlovers......you will love the Spyder.....I have an RS...set up for touring...corbin seat...saddle bags, passenger seat bag...rack on back with touring bag...j&m cb...GPS...larger sheild with wind defectors....and I have not spent as much as a RT....if you want sporty go with RS....if you want a touring bike go with RT...either one is GREAT!!!!spyder castle.jpg

Welcome to the SpyderHood

I agree with the above posts & would add one more thing to consider. If most of your ryding will be solo, I'd suggest the RS model. However, if much of your ryding time will be 2 up or even 2+, theres little hope in making an RS as comfortable as the RT comes stock from the factory, especially for your passenger. As far as models go, your local climate and desire to extend your ryding season can help you decide that. All RT models have the adjustable wind-shield, but the RT-S & RT LIMITED models also add heated grips for ryder & passenger & these, along with the adjustable shield greatly improve your comfort and with the propper gear, along with not allot of ice & snow on the ground & you can have year round ryding, just like Teddy & I are fortunate to enjoy.

Last tidbit I'd offer for your consideration is the ability to add a factory hitch and trailer or after-market camper. Thats optional on the RT models but NOT reccommended for the RS models. It can be done on the RS models, & has been by many on here, but if you buy new, then you risk voiding your 2 year factory Warranty, just something to keep in mind.

The Spyders are like nothing else on the road & many of us find them addictive to ryde and the more comfortable you get on your new machine the more you'll want to ryde :p Good luck with your decision & Welcome to the SpyderHood, you've found the BEST spot on the World Wide Web for anything & everything Spyder related :firstplace:

If you will be riding two-up go for an RT but if you want all-out performance & handling the RS may be for you.

When you start shopping seriously, call dealers far and wide for availability and prices. It is surprising just how much difference you can find in the quotes from dealers in various locations. A road trip to pick up a new spyder can be a nice experience!

I did not know the RS was not recommended to pull a trailer. Good post. Buy the Spyder according to your riding plans. Travel, two up, etc, the RT is more comfortable...carries more (yes, you can buy bags). I enjoy my CB, GPS and FM/XM radio, which fits on the RT very well. Buy what you like, not what I like. You have to ride it and pay for it....enjoy either as you can not go wrong...

You can rent one before you buy one.... the RS has that sleek physique, but the RT is kinda more cushy for the tushy. Depends on what kind of ryding you plan to do and how much $$$$$$ you want to spend.

www.rentaspyder.info is starting up in the Phoenix area!

Thanks for all the info and the warm welcomes!
I've been kicking tires for a while and actually got to ride a friend's '08 RS last night. I haven't been on a bike in a while so I need to do some clutch-throttle-shift excercises!
There are a few used ones available at the local bike shops and a handful on CraigsList that I'll look at soon.
Anything special I should look for (or look out for) when buying a used Spyder?

Call Chester's HD and ask if they still have the 09 Spyder... it's got a ton of add ons and a steal, if it didn't sell on Ebay... only 1,000 miles!!!

Welcome cstall! This is a great group, all funny, intelligent and sincere folks. You'll be glad you are a member!

WELCOME CSTALL !!!!!

whatever you decide to buy... make SURE you ride it
first. and if the dealership WON'T let you ride one...

KEEP ON TRUCKIN....!!!!!

riding a Spyder, prior to purchase is a MUST. if you
don't like it on the test ride; you darn sure won't
like it when you own it and write the check each
month.

RS VS. RT

Welcome aboard...Mike here....Don't pay too much attention to Randy.....I will match my GS/RS up against most RT'S anytime.....I only spent $350 to do it, and I'm getting 37 MPG...and most RT'S don't get nearly that......AND BUY A YELLOW ONE !!!!!!!.....:agree:......

:welcome: Arntufun kind of said it all.

I have had experience with both the RS (mine was early model--so called GS) and the early RTS--I have # 474 Premier Edition.

That said, I have over 20,000 miles on both models. Since there was no RTS in 2008--I took the stock GS and added over $6000 worth of accessories to make it a touring bike. It was nice and more comfortable than what I started with--but I could not wait to trade it off on the RTS.

The RTS is more cushy and set up for comfort for the long haul.

What do I recommend: you should test drive both and see what appeals to you the most. Consider your style of riding, whether you want sportier, or more luxury oriented.

Keep us posted on what you decide, and happy hunting.
