There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Battery Tender

I know I need to put it on a tender; I just want to know how often.
The manual says to charge once a month, but I’m unfamiliar with a tender on its frequency of use.

I leave 2 Spyders a Harley and at least one car on battery tenders all the time when not in use. Never had a problem and a Harley battery would last 6 years instead on the usual 2 - 3.

Make sure you get a float charge, not a trickle charger.

There are many other posts listing makes.

I plug mine in only during the "Dark Spell" of Winter.
I still start it up every couple of weeks to keep the fluids circulating... (unplug during the loud moments!)

I use a battery tender JR . The spyder is hooked up to the tender when it not being used as the tender keeps the battery fully charged and maintains the charge in maintenance mode see this link for a great explanation

I have let my Spyder sit as long as 3 weeks without charging. I was a little late hooking up the battery tender this year. Both of my cycles started right up--so the batteries were still good at 3 weeks.

Once I attach the battery tenders, they stay on all the time through the "big sleep".

The bikes are ready to go whenever I want to start riding them.

Like Marker said -if I'm not getting miles of smiles on the :spyder2: the Spyder is hooked up to Battery Tender Jr. Definitely going to extend the life of the battery !

OK, I have been looking into the battery tenders and find that they typically are 12v750mA or 12v1.25A
The RT service manual says to slow charge the battery once a month with a 2amp

What is the recommendation on the tender, does the 750 just take longer or should I go with the 1.25amp

The 750 ma Battery Tender will work, but the 1.25 A unit will be better. The AGM batteries can take more amperage. An Accumate, Optimate, or Xtreme charger will not harm them, and have additional features that make them preferable to me. Any of these multi-stage, floating chargers can be left attached indefinitely.

I use Yuasa chargers (they make a majority of the motorcycle batteries out there)...

Go with the :

[h=2]Automatic 12V 1.5 Amp Battery Charger[/h]
  • Fully automatic 5 stage cycle for efficient charging
  • 28-day charge recycle re-evaluates battery condition for long-term storage
  • Up to 16 volts for recovery of sulfated batteries
  • Error proof operation
  • Reverse polarity protection
  • 3 year limited warranty
  • Download the 1.5 Amp Charger Safety Instructions (a PDF file

Key thing I like is ITEM 2 above .. plus had one go bad a few year ago they took care of it and sent a new charger pretty quickly.

I leave my Harley and the SPYDER RT on the charger 24/7 when not riding. I pull in garage and plug it in.

I ride 365/24/7 and hook up BR1 when not riding. Ditto my Wing. I change out batteries ever three years, whether or not they show signs of weakness. I do this so I won't get stuck in Terlingua, TX or beautiful downtown Redford. Most do not agree with this, but I wish to make sure the buzzards do not eat me at the side of the road while I wait for a car to help me.

Which is the better choice; a Battery Tender Plus or the Battery Tender Junior?

Thanks

looks like the PLUS is 1.25 amps max and the jr is .75 amps.

plus has 10 yr warrenty and the jr has 5 yr ...

you can get the PLUS in PINK nojoke = http://batterytender.com/motorcycle/pink-battery-tender-plus-12v-at-1-25a.html

---------

but all that I still say take a look at the Yuasa which looks like it has the following features over either of the battery tender line:

  1. 5 stages for charging instead of 4.
  2. Ability to bump to 16 volts if you have a sulfated battery
  3. And most importantly for long term useage ... is the 28 day charge cycle where it tests your battery when on long term float charging every 28 days!

And no I do not work for them or affiliated with them in any way :)

I prefer the 1.25 as I use them on my truck and cars also. I have several, some Battery Tenders, some Wal-Mart built by Schumacher. All work well.

:spyder2:

Recently my :spyder2: would not start (the computer would boot but once you hit the engine start button it would just click and reboot the computer). I should have suspected a battery issue back in Alabama when it would start but reboot the computer. I figured that I was delaying long enough to buy a battery tender so I purchased the 2 bank charger for both our :spyder2:'s with 2 25 ft leads. I ordered on a Sunday and got in on Wednesday (free shipping), so I went straight to hooking up the clamps on my :spyder2:. After charging overnight, my Gray started right away!!! I still need to take it to the dealer to make sure if there are no other issues. But truly recommend the Battery Tender, especially the 2 bank for those 2 :spyder2: families or 1 and one other bike...:ohyea:

I was at the motorcycle show and the vendor for YUSA batteries was there and recommended using the battery tender ALL the time. It will actually increase the life considerably.

I have a routine with my tender, unplug tender, start Spyder, put on helmet. After my ride, pull in garage, turn off Spyder, take of helmet, plug in Spyder.
