After adding Cowtown’s RT Performance Package to Barbwire’s 2010 RT/AC (Ram Air, Green Air Filter, Iridium IX Plugs and Two Brothers Exhaust) I wanted to make sure that the fuel/air mixture was within limits without having to add any peripheral device. Note: I was assured by Len and Dan at Cowtown that all was good and there was not an issue and nothing else would need to be added. I called Lamont and asked him if he knew of any body that could Dyno the Spyder and he didn’t. I got out the phone book and found FASTECH Motorsports in Louisville, TN., just up the road, ½ mile, from Alcoa Good Times. Unknown at the time but this would prove to be very helpful. Mark the owner of FASTECH had never put a Spyder on his in ground Dyno but said he could so I made the appointment. Not being knowledgeable of the complexity of the computer system on the Spyder we put the Spyder on the Dyno got her all secured and started the Dyno run, remember I said I had no knowledge of the computer system, well it wasn’t long before the learning started with the help of others. Being as the front wheels were not turning the Spyder threw the following codes, ABS Fault, Check Engine Fault and went into Limp Mode. I called Lamont told him what I was doing he told me I have to remove the Wheel Speed Sensor, I asked him about the codes and he said I would need to take it to a dealer to get them cleared. Remember Alcoa Good Times is just down the road, yahoo! With the Wheel Speed Sensor disconnected we rode the Spyder to the dealer. I spoke with Shawn the service manager and told him what I was doing and asked if he could clear the codes he said he could and went to check with his tech as to how long it would be, came back and told me it would be about 20 min before he could get to it. Note: Alcoa Good Times is the dealer we go to for service and Shawn is the new service manager and he and his staff will and have gone beyond what you would typically expect from a dealer. The Tech cleared the codes and we were on our way back to FASTECH. Well we didn’t get but 1/8[SUP]th[/SUP] of a mile from Alcoa when Barbwire signaled me that there was a problem; remember the speed sensor was disconnected when the codes were re-set & I forgot to give this info to the Tech. Now we had more codes. I told my wife to turn around and go back to Alcoa and I would go get the bolt that holds the speed sensor in. Back at Alcoa they put the speed sensor back in cleared the codes again and back to FASTECH. I called Lamont again and he told me the error of my ways and told me the correct set-up procedure to get the Dyno done without throwing codes. Now for the Dyno results, 95.2 HP, Fuel/Air mix range 14.5 @ 2800 rpm and 12.8 @ 7600 rpm. These results serve as a good snap shot of the state of tune for the Spyder and supports Cowtown’s claim that no other peripheral device would be needed.
Again Lamont thank you for all the assistance, Shawn at Alcoa thank you for taking care of me, both times. If you are in the area stop by and visit with the staff at Alcoa Good Times. BTW you hear so much about dealers not giving priority to out of town riders, well Shawn told me that if at all possible they will move an out of town rider up front if they have the means to get them back on the road. Len and Dan at Cowtown thank you for knowing about the product you sell and providing the correct information as to the characteristics of the Performance Package you have put together. Most dealers just want to sell a product and have no real knowledge of the specifics. It should be noted that Barbwire was opposed to the whole Dyno thing, but she let me do it anyway. Her quote was she felt like she took her prize racehorse out and rode him to death ‘cuz she doesn’t like to hear her Spyder rev’d that high.
