My friends in Spokane bought 2 Spyder RS,s and the paint seems to be coming off the mufflers in chunks. Anyone else have this problem and what kind of paint to repair. They have tried engine paint but still coming off.:dontknow:

Paint

I built a 65 Cobra with a hot V-8 and its has exposed side pipes. I paint them with flat black BBQ paint I haven't any issues like yours. My pipes are steel though.?? EDIT: Not called BBQ paint RUST-OLEUM specialty "HIGH HEAT", follow can directions good up 1200 degree's. It works

The first year or so there were a lot of complaints with burn spots in the paint, but I don't remember it coming off in chunks, were they bought together new, are they still under warranty? The stainless may not have been prepped right, but for both of them to be like that suggest it might be a bad batch, I would see if the dealer would give me a new one, take it off, wrap it up for later and store it, and go get a nice after market, then when you get ready to sell it, if ever, you will have a brand new one to hang on your bike and get another few $$ for the aftermarket.

Wouldn't the BBQ paint be able to take more heat than the engine paint?? :dontknow: Now I don't know much about painting anything.. other than try and keep most of the paint going towards where you want it to land... What if you just stripped all of it off and did a real bang-up job of prepping the surface for the next attempt??

Engine paint won't do the job. You need header paint. May still not stick unless you sand the muffler and clean it thoroughly.

I had the problem with the paint coming off in one area; with less than 6000 miles the dealer replaced the muffler under warranty. The second muffler lost paint in chunks in a couple of areas. I went to an after market muffler for about a week; that was all the gf could stand.

I was going to have the stock muffler powder coated; but, the person who was going to do the job said no b/c powder coating starts to bubble around 350 deg. F. So, I had the muffler (water heater, cannon or whatever name you want to call it) ceramic coated for $10 more than what powder coating would have been. When all is said and done, it still looks like a stock muffler. It's not any prettier with ceramic coating. But, hopefully the coating will last longer than paint.

we used an ceramic exhaust paint....purchased at auto parts store......sanded the muffler down to no paint....lacquer thinner to clean-up...masked off and painted....been good for about 15,ooo miles......

I've painted my wife's a couple times with bbq paint and have had no problem. You sound like you have a bonding issue, though.

Same problem here on our 08 GS...my husband is planning on taking the paint off and buff the metal out...less maintenance!

Thank you all for the good info. I will pass along to my friends. No not new when bought but both still under warranty. Both are 09s. We will see.

As you may know, I made a lot of exhaust systems for the Spyder. This is the ONLY coating that lasted... purchased from Summit Racing on the web.

rustoleum makes bbq black, which is FLAT black. they also make bbq black ultra, which falls somewhere between SATIN and SEMI-GOSS. see h m exhaust in mods section.1200 miles , has not changed at all.

The paint came off of my muffler. First in "chunks" and then just peeled away over time. The RS has virtually no Black on it all all now. I was thinking of just polishing it up and having it "polished stainless" BUT I have traded it in for a new 2012 RT-S so I will let the Dealer deal with it ;)

The Peeling started about 2 - 3 months after I purchased the RS

Using Rust-oleum High Heat Ultra Semi-Gloss Paint bought at home depot, I sanded it down and washed it off with dish soap (instructions just say soap) and let dry. I then taped up the endcap and my 2Brothers custom label and 3 coats and 18 hours later (13 of that drying), I got the following product.

It survived a 300 mile trip the next day (Easter Sunday) with just road dirt getting on it.
