Cluster update and temp readings after- time to eat some crow

Thats a big difference now in temp. between 4 and 5 bars with the update? Thats just not good, so why bother now with a guage BRP should maybe just go for an idiot light.:gaah:

I agree idiot light would be good, gage was nice when new and learning how :spyder2: runs, now I never look at gage I figure if it does get hot it will boil over and let me know:chill: Honestly I don't think any engine damage would occur until after the boil over point, so I ryde and if I ever get steam coming up or smell that sweet smell then I will stop, until then I'm enjoyin' the Ryde

Could you please, elaborate on what you mean by this?
Was there another problem that made it run hotter? Thx!

First off Lamont I was not saying I know more than you and you are wrong and I am right, you defiantly know a whole lot more about the Spyder than I do I just know that my spyder began to run hotter after the update even on the highway riding at 80mph and with the ambient temperature in the low 60's I can feel the heat is hotter than before and my cluster always showed me 3 bars and now 5 with fan running all the time.

So after all these posting and Lamont's finding on the cluster/bars reading and temps this is what I believe might be my problem with my bike running hotter, I have the Evoluzione Spal fan controller that you set to turn on your fan first at 50% and then at 100% the way this is done is to use the cluster temp bars to set the fan so what I believe has happen is the update has somehow affected the way the bars now show up on the cluster and this might have changed how my fan controller come on and maybe has now made it come on later because it is now getting a false reading which of course makes it hotter but the Spal is getting a temperature reading from the factory sending unit also which I would think that is where the cluster is also getting the reading from as well I will have to look into this and change the setting to see if this helps .

So my new question is if the cluster temp bars shows more bars and climb much faster but engine is not running any hotter what's the purpose of the temps bars and where is this getting the reading from, does not seem that the temp bars are of any use if you can not rely on it to give you an accurate reading on your engine coolant/temperature and I still say that the cluster update has affected the running temperature of the spyder engine some how and maybe it's running hotter but the cluster bars are not really showing you the real reading or it's now not getting an accurate reading as well. I still want this update removed from my Spyder and I should have the choice do have this done.

Correct, BIG RED 1 has a 2011 RT.

I emailed my dealer and she said they do not have this update, but "BRP said they would get it sometime this month."

She and husband own Southwest Texas Suzuki...a small dealer and seem interested in the customer. I will be there in a week for my 3K oil change and checkup....I will see then....

I would disconnect the controller and see if things go back to normal.

If it is firmware then it won't be removable but what I don't understand through all this is WHY did you get the odometer update anyway if you knew you were never going to get that high on your millage??? :dontknow:

I did connect the factory controller back and bars on cluster still went up fast and fan came on same at 5 bars but went to 6 bars a few time (never seen 6 bars in two years I have had my Spyder). I did not know what this update was till it was done and if I knew I would have not let them do it, I was there in the first place to have the belt tension checked.
I thought since it's BRP I should not have to worry if they will do something to my Spyder after all they are the manufacture and we should be able to trust them to properly test these things out, but guess what we can't.

What can happen is when the throttle body plates are being held shut for 40 min. they can get stuck and burn up the motor and then you have to replace the throttle body. This fix is going to back it off a degree or so.

I was told by Kurt Otteson that there are actually two throttlebody problems. The first one is a defective hardware condition in which the butterfly valves get "sticky" and will not close properly (won't idle down). The second one is the firmware problem you describe. I have had the first problem twice and my throttlebody has been replaced. My 2011 RT is on it's third throttlebody. I will have the firmware update to prevent the second kind of problem which is much more serious.

I have been thinking about the perceived problem with the engine temperature. It seems we should now see six bars pretty much where we would have seen five bars. With this logic, are we going to see limp mode (seven bars, or so) when it is not necessary?

I sincerely hope that this "update" doesn't get shoved down our throats, like the junk that was buried in the DPS recall update. It would be nice to have a choice, instead of having this automatically downloaded to our machines when BUDS was hooked up. Gee, you would have thought BRP's programmers would have learned their lessons the first time they buried extra code in a fix. :gaah:

Lamont,

Thank you for running that temperature check again...

I think I now know why my bike wasn't being affected by the missing air dam...perhaps the air dam is working fine and the bike is just reading hotter, when in actuality, it isn't?

Good work on your end...always appreciative from my end!

Thanks for posting this information Lamont. I especially liked seeing your side by side comparison photos to show what the actual water temps are. Great job bro! :2thumbs:

So if the throttle body software update/fix is only for the 2011 RT does this mean 2010 RTs don't have the problem? I thought Lamont's RT is a 2010 and he is taking it in for the update/fix :dontknow:
