TOO MUCH HEAT - not again!

I know this has been beaten to death based on doing searches on the forum. However, I am still confused as to the best solution. Several posters have different years and models of the Spyder and I am getting confused as to which is the BEST solution for my 2011 RT Limited.

Several previous posters have also indicated they would post their results, but I often don't find what they determined after doing the install.

I did not notice the heat on my right side foot and leg the first few times I rode when the temperature was under 85 or so or if it was there, it did not bother me.

Today, I had it out for an extended ride. It was in the lower 90's with very high humidity. Most of the trip was "on the move" with limited Stop time. Temperature gauge never got much over half for any extended period of time.

By the time I got back home, I really noticed how hot my right foot and leg were. The whole side of the bike was extremely hot.

Even after parking it in my garage after about 10 minutes I went to get my keys out of the glove box and almost burned my hands from the heat that had worked up from the bike into the glove box to the keys!

My questions:

1. Do any of you "pro's" know if BRP is doing anything to solve this problem for current owners. It is apparently a definite design/engineering issue based on all the complaints. (As more new riders are getting into the HOT time of the season I suspect there will continue to be calls for help.)

2. Is there a REAL solution? Again, I have seen several vendors promoting solutions. My question is do they REALLY work? Don't they just divert the heat to another area of the bike causing a problem there.

3. Do you need to do all 3 (Exhaust tape, bottom shield and radiator deflector) to solve the problem and do they actually solve it or just mitigate it?)

4. Does installing any of these items, (heat tape, special covers/shields) void either the standard or Extended BEST warranty?

Again, I am only looking for answers from those that know if these work on a 2011 RT SE5, not older different models as I am not sure the design is identical.

Thanks all for your time and responses. :-)

Just had my SpyderPops heat shield installed this past week at Maggie Valley. Hence, the jury is still out. I've had it out briefly for a short time in 98 degree weather. (That's 98 outside and not what is being registered on my spyder). I've noticed a marked difference in the heat. As I said though, the jury is still out.

I had Harvey install mine in Cuba. I have not rode in a lot of very hot weather, but have not noticed my foot getting hot either. It looks good so far, but I guess time will tell!

Had mine done at Maggy Valley too Chris. HUGE improvement. Been out in 90 degree plus weather, about 400 miles since the install, including running the Tail of the Dragon and I can say that it is a marked improvement. Still some heat, but not painful like before. Definitely worth it. Thanks Spyderpops for installing it in the rain on Sunday morning at 8:30.:ohyea:

How about a picture of the heat shield?

I'm on the road for another 3 or 4 weeks so can't post pictures now, but you can find some info on Spyderpops.com website. It's basically a black plexiglass looking block off for the vent. Works well.

I think that the heat issues are the same on the 2010 and 2011 RTs. I had the Spyderpops shields installed last week and I do notice a difference. It is a pretty inexpensive mod.

We did the heat shield...... unnoticeable difference.
also put on the side shields .....cat heat is HOT yet. (you could fry bacon on the right side)
we're looking into other ways to keep heat off right side.

if you slice it thin enough you can!
by the way, heat was over 150.

i'll just be quiet for a while, since i obviously don't know squat!!!!!!
So if it was 150 with the shield on what was it with it off? I'm not saying you don't know squat I'm just showing you my documented results. If you have different results then lets try and figure out why.

Install heat shield before MV. did notice a big differance in heat on right side. Yes you are diverting the heat but you are not cooking your leg or foot. :spyder:running about same temp as before

The SpyderPop heat shield work!

We also had the SpyderPops heat shield added at Maggie Valley and have noticed a huge difference in Driver comfort. We put an additional 800 miles on the Spyder after the install and can say, for us, they really work. Plus, for the price you really can't go wrong.

Heat

Installed all Syderpops upgrades on my 2008 RS and there is a great difference. No more hot foot and temp has dropped 2 bars on gauge. Very happy with the products.
Crisis

No more hot foot

Had all 3 elements put on at Maggie Valley and then rode home to Florida in 95 degree weather and i felt absolutely no heat on my right foot..It was cheap and worth every cent !!! Thanks Spyderpop for coming up with a solution that BRP should have solved. Does anyone from BRP ever ride a Spyder?? Obvioulsy not....

Huge Diff

Know you requested only answers from 2011 RTSE5 owners. BUT then I never could follow instructions!!!! I own a 2010 RTSE5..
.had my "heat shield" put on by Spyderpops at Spyderfest...have added around 5000 miles since then...huge diff...my dealer was a little concerned about heating up...told him engine temp actually runs cooler. And absolutely no heat on leg/foot whereas before yep it was VERY noticeable.
Inexpensive mod that I would highly recommend...
Ryde ON in comfort!!

I have a 2010 RT and Spyder Pops put the heat shield on mine at Spyderfest. I love it! No more hot foot. The first thing I put on in Gatlinburg was the Baker Air Wings and OMG they are great! If it is cold you keep them closed and when it heats up you push them open and the air flow is wonderful. Between those 2 things I am a happy rider. Just got home from a 2800 + mile trip to Americade and Maggie Valley and my only complaint is the squeek I developed when I go in reverse or very slow speeds.

2011 RT-S SE5 - SpyderPops is the way to go IMHO

Teddy had a 2010 RT-S SE5 that we traded to Len at Cowtown for a 2011 RT-S SE5 SpyderFest Eddition #1 of 5. Our new :spyder2: came with the fin-guard Highway Pegs which (IMHO) were basically useless (at least on the right side) do to the extreme heat put out on my right foot:yikes: Even with full boots and thick socks, after about 15 minutes, the heat would be unbearable :gaah:

We road the 450 miles home from Cowtown (Cuba MO) with the new :spyder2: & I couldn't use the highway pegs. The next week, we made the same exact trip down for SpyderFest, & I still couldn't use the highway pegs. Had Harvey install the SpyderPops missing air dam & the cat extenders on both sides of the new :spyder2: & WOW  WHAT A DIFFERENCE:thumbup:

Please don't misunderstand, the heat problem is still there:( that's something BRP will have to deal with :lecturef_smilie: But with the air-dam in place, most the hot air is deflected down and out the lower opening and not the top one that tends to burn your foot. And the lower cat-shields allow the rest of the hot air to be channeled under the :spyder2: and out the rear where the exhaust let's out as well:thumbup:. Since we've had the air-dam & Cat-Shields installed, we've put over 6000 miles on the :spyder2: & I'm VERY HAPPY TO SAY, They DO work & are worth every penny & more :2thumbs:

That be'n said, I don't have any temp. gauge readings to back up my claim, sorry :dontknow: But I do use my Fin-Guard Highway Pegs now on a daily basis, & have even ridden with sneakers & shorts (please, save the lecture:lecturef_smilie:) just to see what it felt like:hun: & Yup, you can tell there is a heat source still present behind the shield, but I was still comfortable enough to Ryde a 150 mile trip in close to 100F degree temps & still use my highway pegs :2thumbs: without an issue. Also, the coolant temp. On the :spyder2: has never gone above 5 bars yet

This is NOT a solution to the actual heat issue, but more like a work around that makes the:spyder2: much more comfortable & user friendly:yes: Plus, it looks good, almost unnoticeable, like it was meant to be there instead of the gaping hole that comes standard:roflblack: from BRP:lecturef_smilie:
