Headset Question (problem)

I have dealer installed BRP am/fm/xm/cb. When I have the front speakers on, they will blow you off of your seat...no problem. I have BRP dealer installed headset/mic installed in my FF Shoei helmet.

When sitting, I can hear the radios, when I get to 40-50 mph with the volume full up, I can hardly make out music is even playing....and the am voices are barely audible....It does not appear to be a wind problem. Windshield full up. I have reset and tested this several times with the same results.

My thoughts are the BRP headset is not up to the job and thinking of changing out to J&M elite...costly, but would be worth it if they work.

I have a lower cost Chatterbox headset in my Gold Wing FF Shoei helmet (same helmet, different color) and it works VERY well up to 70 or so and then the wind takes over.

Your comments please and the equipment you use...thanks.

I had the J & M set-up on my SE5 and when I got my RTS I went non wired to the Scala Q4 and never looked back .I was disappointed with the J&M set-up big time in one season went through both helmet cords and one lower cord and was never ever able to use the CB function because of all the electrical interference.

I am not famlier with the Scala 4 system. Is this a wireless system or ??

I am not too hot on the electronics, but sure do like the engine and running gear....

We have the BRP CB/COMM setup with the BRP headsets. We get full volume in the headsets. In the settings, we have the sound selected for the headsets only. We do not use the speakers in the Spyder. I would have your dealer check why the headsets get not much sound.

George,

Wait until your dealer finishes repairs on your CB. It may be that they'll also find the answer to your headset issue. The headset jacks and wiring harnesses are part of the CB/Intercom system, so give time to fix that.

In the meantime, before buying new headsets, confirm the proper placement of your current headset earphones inside the helmet. If they are not positioned properly, you'll lose a ton of sound in the space between the speaker and your ears. Imagine a pair of headphones that are placed near your ears, but not fully on them, maybe just forward of them. Then pull those headphones a half inch away from your head & you'll have the idea. Sounds horrible. If, on the other hand, you get them in the "sweet spot" (positioned properly), not only will you have an easy time hearing them, but they'll also have impressive fidelity. Imagine NOT having the bass turned all the way up because you can hear the bass just fine at a lower bass level. A good headset positioned properly can give you just that.

One of the tips Ed of EdSets gives is, prior to installation, take the headset speakers, hook them up and place the speakers against your ears while playing music through them. Move them around until you get the very best sound possible through those speakers. Now you have a sound reference to use when placing them in the helmet. You'll know what to listen for as you search for the best placement.

Good luck!

Mark, thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I will try them tomorrow. I have the speakers off and the headsets on mix (?). I get sound when stopped and at slow speeds. I will fool around with their location in my helmet.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

Mark, did you get into any storms on the way home from Kerrville?

One other thing...someone mentioned a soft cover for my wiring from the Spyder dash to my helmet to keep it from rubbing the paint. I can not find it...I searched but don't rementer the name. Any help here? Thanks.

George, don't forget there are also separate AUTO VOLUME CONTROL ADJUSTMENTS and CB VOLUME ADJUSTMENTS in the settings screens so you might want to check them out also.

That is GREAT advice and I've never seen it expressed so neatly. There isn't enough attention placed on where the ear speakers are placed inside the helmet. Even a small adjustment of a few millimeters can make a remarkable difference.

I have been using the J&M stuff for years and luckily with no problems. I used my last setup on my Victory Vision which was a Nolan 103 with the headset installed by J&M. I have no problem hearing music or anything else (other than the mute issue I mentioned in another post). My lower cords are the J&M lowers and are now 4 years old again with no problems. With the auto volume control on my RTS at 70mph on a windy day I do get some wind noise, but not enough to block out the music or gps info coming into the the ears.

George here is the link for the soft covers you're looking for.

That is it. Thanks Mr. Bear.

Thanks, Steve, I am checking everything....at speed, 40 or so, is when it is when I don't hear well enough to make out the sounds. I hear noise....and know it is music, but can not identify the song, etc. More adjustment work on my part and checking out the headsets. I hear well while stopped...

Thanks, guys.

Thanks, Willy. I have my auto volume on high...I will double check it however, along with every other setting and the headset placement in my helmet.

I wish to thank all of you for your informative inputs. Yesterday, I removed my helmet earphones and replaced them closer to my ears. The dealer had installed them. I then went out on IH10W and followed a trucker out of San Antonio. I told him I was checking my CB and he talked to me for several miles.

I lagged behind him up to 1/2 mile or so and both of us were strong. I could hear him very well...duh!

Bottom line, I guess my ear pieces were not installed close enough to my ears....and my hearing is not that great anyway.

I will ride Saturday with my group and double check the CB out. More later.

Again, I appreciate all of your help.

I rode with my group yesterday. The leader was maybe 3/8 of a mile or more ahead of me and I could hear him and he could hear me very well. It seems the repositioning of the ear pieces worked.

Additionally, I think my other friend who also leads has a CB problem. He has a new HD Screaming Eagle and his CB is not as clear as his previous HD.

Anyway, my dealer called and said they have a new shipment of CB's in and will change mine out as needed....my call. I think I will hold off for another ride or so and see how it goes. I think it is fine.
