Can Am Tail Bag Issues

Anyone have zipper issues with the Can-Am Tailbag? From just about day 1 the zipper on my tailbag was snagging on the textile edge below the zipper. It would get hung and I would have to work it free.

Then, of course, the fabric started to fray and the problem just kept getting worse. Now it's virtually unusable. Real shame, bag is just about new but I'm going to have to replace it.

Just wondering if this is a common issue or I just got a bad one.

:agree: Right out of the box. Put some soap on it and that seemed to help it but sometimes it still sticks..just on one side.

If I had not been on a trip I would have put some Door Ease on it. The zipper is fine, it's that fabric lip below the zipper on the right side (looking at the bag from the opened end.).

I like the bag fine but it's gotten to be a battle to get the zipper to go past the offending point every time I try to get into the bag. I've trimmed back the frayed portion but it just catches in the same place.

No way I'm going to fight this bag all the way through the G&G ride. Like I said, great bag with 1 problem that makes it unusable.

Interesting though, that others have had the same issue. Maybe a design flaw. I wonder if the new bags are made any different. I don't want to do this twice.

Nancy had to return the first tank bag she got for the same problem. She has had to struggle with her seat bag, too. I tis not just limited to the BRP products. We have a little backpack cooler that fits the frunk perfectly. That is starting to do the same thing. Can you melt back the frayed portions with a heat gun, match, or soldering iron, to open up some clearance in the offending portions?

If these are plastic zippers you have to be super caerful using any heat sorce. If metal zipper it should be no problem. In either case you need to lubricate the zipper teeth with detergent or wax. Most of these problems come from high production runs and close tolerences to save money and stretch/reduce materials. After doing leather work for the past 39 years along with 30+ years in factories I've seen this more and more in production work. :sour:

Sad but true. I've noticed the same thing with our seat bag. I'm just real careful with it now, but it's still a bit irritating. These bags are no wheres near the quality of the trunk suitcase. I almost returned them, but decided to give them a try. Oh well...

No zipper issues--but the snuggy strap broke the second time I used the bag. Ripped right out of the seam--and I was NOT pulling hard on it. Also was not happy with the back seat cowl that I bought for the 2009 RS. The hold down bungees broke apart from dry rot the first season. BRP would not sell me replacement bungees--so I have a red cowling with 1 bungee out of four--that is not being used. I'm also not to happy with the cheesy suitcase liners for the bags and trunk on the RTS. I thought that set was overpriced for what I got. Bought them sight unseen--so was a bit surprised when they came in. I do like the rolling Frunk suitcase though--I use that a lot for hauling my books and papers on class night. Enough gripes--I am happy with everything else I got.

Well, I gave up on my BRP bag. Great bag if I could just get the zipper to quit eating the flap below the zipper. But it just keeps getting worse and I know where that's going.

So, I've decided to give this Firstgear Tail Bag a try. It's expandable, holds a bit more than the BRP bag, looks good (in the pictures anyway) and I think I can make it work at least as well as the BRP bag as far as attachment.

I'm hoping to attach under the seat instead of around the grab bars. That would reslove the only other (minor) issue I have with the BRP bag.

I like the idea of the separator that comes with it too.

If anyone would like one of these I can sell them, delivered, for $98.00 each. My suppler just dropped the price on them! Right after I ordered mine! Wouldn't you know it. :gaah: I've got the entire line of Firstgear bags. They make Tank Bags, Roller Bags, etc.

I have not seen the Can-Am bag so I can't accurately compare the two but this bag is going to work well for me. It has a lot of space as is and can get even more with the expansion feature. I also like the supplied dividers for use inside the bag. As far as attaching it, I couldn't get it to work as far as attaching the supplied bungee cords under the seat as they won't allow for the seat to latch down. Some straps may do the trick though instead of the cords. I actually like it better mounted to the sport rack I have since the bottom of the bag isn't really contoured to the passenger seat. To mount it on the sport rack I am going to have to get some shorter cords because for that mounting spot the supplied cords are too long.

Overall, without actually having used it yet I am very impressed with this bag. I will give further reviews once I get some shorter cords and get it securely attached to my Spyder.

The bottom is rigid but I think it will flex some. I have the stock seat on my Spyder and the bag is just a little to big too fit in there without the back part of it sitting on the front part of the sport rack, just a little bit though. Yes, it does have both bungees and hook loops so it does allow for a few different configurations as far as attaching it to the bike.

Too bad. A great bag with a few minor flaws. My cat is sleeping in my Tail Bag! He don't need no stinking zipper! Well at least I'm getting some use out of it!
