Lamonster signs up for Guts & Glory Rally

There are ways that you can get involved too if you can do the whole ride. They have it setup now so you can just do a leg of the ride if you want. I know of one SpyderLover that is looking into doing that and maybe that's something you guys would be up for.

This sounds very cool. I'll be looking into the Indiana to DC leg.

Way cool Lamont! we want to support you and the boys. Great to see spyder have such a strong showing!:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

WOW

WOW Lamont,
I am in AWE, This sounds like a great feat, for a very worthy cause.
I would love to ryde up to LA just to say Hi before you start!

Alright, lets all pull together and help the boys out. Things like, pull together in ride groups, help escort them accross your state, buy a few tanks of fuel, possible take care of a few dinner, meet them at the end of the legs help change tire, oil, or whatever they need. We just don't want to get in the way or slow them down! Also calling all dealer to help out, be there at the end of the leggs, with a tech, tools, possible parts, whatever it takes to help make the crazy race alittle easyer on them. I think with our help they can have the most support of all the ryders! Let's show them our love spyderlover, it our turn to give back!:2thumbs: Here's to the fantastic 4:2thumbs:

:agree: -- but we'll have to be careful so as not to break any rules by 'assisting' them too much.

I also don't believe we're allowed to ride along with them. Seems to recall them saying we could ride individual legs - but it would not be while they were running the legs - and I don't think they get the leg routes very far in advance........like just after each leg they get the next one?

I really like the idea of having Spyder groups at the state signs--- but it could be hard to time.... not sure we'll have much notice on what time they'll be hitting what sign??

Either way each state of Spyderlovers needs to make our presence and at least moral support shown! :2thumbs:

Lamont just shoved a paper at me and said 'Sign Here'! He didn't say what it was for.

Hey Lamont!

You mentioned in an earlier post that sleeping with your ride is part of the "GUTS" in "GUTS and GLORY". Well sir, I can tell you from experience that sleeping under the stars beside your ryde is quite a feeling. Something I'm certain a Cowboy or an Indian would have done with his horse while roaming the range. Used to do a lot of that in my younger days (and that's a long time ago for me). Anyways, good luck to you guys, have fun and most importantly, drive safe!

Hope to meet you someday,

Personally, I think it is just CRAZY!

Why would anyone put themselves through something like that? Eleven consecutive days doing 16-18 hours in the saddle? :yikes: And that's if everyting goes really WELL!

That's not Intrepid! That's Insane! :helpsmilie:

Then, by the time Ron gets his daily submissions of the on-going "soap" put together and posted, he's really not going to be getting much sleep:popcorn::yikes:!

Not a problem! I just don't sleep for 11 days! :yikes::yikes::yikes:

Probably improve the dialog! :D

Guts and Glory Ride

If you are riding through Ohio, it would be great to get the Ohio Spyder Riders to cheer you on.:2thumbs:

This is not the entire story either, by any means. For example, Lamont will have to ride 2,200+ miles to get to the starting point, and about 1,200 miles to get back home from the finish line. I would think anyone riding to the starting point will have similar additional miles no matter where they live.

Of course you can trailer to the start point... but then how do you get your rig back home?

I think the hardest part of this trip will be going through Knoxville on the 8th day. Just a right turn on I-40 and in a little over an hour, he's home!

Answers to Guts and Glory Rally

1. They do mount a GPS chip to our bike and if I remember right you will be able to follow us on the Gut's and Glory website.

Answer: The Guts and Glory Rally will supply a GPS Tracking unit to each rider. The Rider's "Number" will be linked to a GPS unit that will be updated on our website. It will be "live" tracking.

2. They are allowing trailers and the "Guts" part of the trip is sleeping with your ride.

Answer: Trailers are allowed but, a rider is not allowed to have extra fuel in the trailer. They will NOT be allowed to sleep in the trailer.

3. You do get extra points for that.

Answer: For every night a rider selects "Camp Guts", 50 points will be added to their total.

4. I would say if you can pull it you can do whatever you want with it including sleeping in it but the G&G guys would have to say for sure.

Answer: Sorry, no sleeping in the trailer. All that is allowed for Camp Guts is a sleeping bag, bedroll, or a hammock. No tents or make shift shelters are allowed. Maybe this will give us all a little more respect for what our Military goes through daily.

5. The best way to help is to donate to the charity. You can donate as little as a penny per mile or as much as you like. This link will show you how to sponsor a rider.
http://www.gutsandgloryrally.com/GutsAndGloryRiderPKG-opt.pdf

Answer: You can also select the charity of your choice to raise donations for also. That is why the package was created. You can also obtain sponsorship for your personal expenses during the rally. That is up to you to decide. We made the sponsorship package for these reasons.
ie. Rider XX has a pledge of 10 cents a mile for every mile he rides (not to exceed 10,000 mile) to be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Center.
9435 miles Rider XX rides
x .10 cents per mile
$943.50 donated to Breast Cancer Research in the name of Rider XX

Thanks

This sounds like a blast; I'm not convinced that a RS is the way to go but the RT would help ease the strain quite nicely. My disabilities would pretty much preclude me from becoming involved unfortunately; unless there is a stretch that I could do around Texas. Anybody want to loan me a RT for the trip? :D

BTW, I may have missed it, and I believe one other poster mentioned it, but how do you work in the oil changes every 3k?

ETA: Is a GPS system pretty much a necessity for this run?

You don't need to change oil every 3K. If you use a good, full synthetic oil you can go a lot further on it. I change mine about every 5k and that's probably overkill.

So, with the right oil you're looking at 1 oil change on this trip. I probably won't change mine at all. All day freeway miles is much easier on oil then short trips or stop and go traffic.

Help along the way

It looks like you are going to be about 1 mile from where I live on one of your legs. We need to start a help sheet that has phone #s ect that they can use if they need it. I'm in East Dubuque Illinois and acording to the map you go right thru Dubuque Ia 1 mile away from me.:f_spider:

I was reading up on the site about riding individual legs. It appears you have to ride an hour behind the entire group and they're charging $250 to do so.

While I understand this is for charity and we can win prizes even just doing one leg, $250 seems excessive to me considering those doing the entire ride (11 legs) are paying $1,000 which includes accommodations.

Not to knock what they're doing, but $100-$150 would be more reasonable IMO.

Starts in Long Beach California

Congratulations on your endeavor!

These are really great causes your riding for!

From there I'll ride about 1800 miles to San Diego where I'll hangout with family till it's time to head to LA to start the race. Then the race is 9,000 miles from LA to Bar Harbor Maine and from there I'll be riding 1200 miles back to East TN. Doing the math I would say this will be well over a 13,000 mile trip when I'm done.

Maybe we could get Berts Mega Mall (Supporting Vendor) to give you a proper send off on Saturday May 14th

the day before it begins so you can get a good nights sleep before Sundays start.

Bert's is only 30 miles from the starting point.

Before December 2009 I knew nothing about the Spyder or the Spyder community. What a great story you tell below from your July 2009 post.

We wound up doing over 1000 miles that day so I know about pushing through when you really don't feel like it and I'm sure there will be days like that on this ride. Here's a link to that trip.

I'm with you on this one! I was thinking of doing at least two legs (maybe the last three) and realized that it would cost me $650, that I'd leave after the main group and have to find and pay for my lodging. As I understand the application for the whole tour, the entrance fee is $1000 and accommodation -- whatever it might be -- is taken care of.

I've since had second thoughts. The costs seem way out of line. In addition, I would get some friends and organizations here to sponsor me as well as getting other sponsors (the G&G website says that there are many firms eager to sponsor individual riders).

This is unfortunate because I suspect many would like to meet other Spyder riders, share and support them for a few miles, and wish them well when they ride on. As it is, that is going to be nearly impossible.
