Trailer plug

I just purchased an Aluma MCT trailer to pull behind the RT. The trailer comes with a five pin female round plug. Also included is a five pin male round plug for the bike, so the question I have is which one do I change or is there a round plug that converts from nine pin to five pin that would work on the RT.

There are a number of threads on this subject. A search for "trailer tongue harness" will net you a long list. There is no readily available adapter (yet). Your best bet is probably to purchase a BRP RT-622 Trailer Tongue Harness P/N 710002029, and either make your own adapter to your 5-pole connector as I did, or directly replace the existing trailer connector with the BRP trailer tongue harness. If your trailer does not have separate turn signals, you will find it easiest to add them.

Scotty,
I assume that replacing the the five pin plug on trailer with a standard nine pin plug would not work, the trailer has brake lights, turn signals and running lights. If I buy the BRP trailer harness can I just cut off the five pin plug on the trailer and wire the BRP harness onto the trailer wires. Will this way use all the wires ( on the bike harness and trailer harness ).

The BRP plug is not a "standard" nine-pin. You will not use all the wires...nor does BRP. The Tongue Harness has the wire functions marked. There are two brake light wires. Choose either one unless your trailer has separate brake light wires for each side. Here is the pinout diagram. You can either cut off the original trailer connector and wire up the BRP harness/connector (or a portion of it), or use it to make an adapter to a 5-pole connector that will match your trailer. If you expect to haul a different trailer someday, you may wish to make the adapter, otherwise wiring the BRP harness directly is the simplest.

Scotty,
I think I understand, I will order the BRP trailer tongue harness and cut off the five pin on the trailer.Thank you for the information

Bobbobtar,
I have the same trailer as you. Scotty helped me with mine this spring.
All you need is the BRP trailer harness. Disassemble the trailer end of the harness. Then wire the round connector that came with the trailer. You will not use all the wires. Aluma should give you a drawing of there connector. If not I have it somewhere. Wire it up and you are up and going. Her is a picture of mine when done.

Hope this helps

Does that cord come with the BRP trailer hitch and control module and you cut one end off and added the 5 pin connector that matches your trailer ?
Or did you purchase that cord separately ?

Fastfraser,
You have to buy the cord. BRP Trailer Tongue Harness P/N 710002029, Cost about $90.00 Then put the round end on to match the trailer.

FYI in new 2011 accessory catalog there is a

4 PIN TRAILER ADAPTOR HARNESS . "Designed to convert trailers electrical harness into a standard 4 pin trailer connector for automotive use. RT-622 # 219400271 $ 139.99"

don't know if this helps at all.

As far as I can tell, this will allow you to tow the RT-622 trailer with a car, not allow use of another trailer with a Spyder RT. Some adapters work in one direction, some in the other. :D

Here are some pics of my adapter, if it helps.

Trailer Plug

Contact Terminal Supply Co., 800-989-9632 and order a Deutsch HD 16-9-16S Plug for about $13.00 and use your own wire and trailer end connector. A better solution than the Hi-Dollar BRP wiring harness.:2thumbs:

If I follow that catalog correctly, you will also need to order terminals, plugs for the blanks, and the special crimping pliers. That puts the cost much closer.

spyder hitch and wiring for a trailer

I am having a heck of a time getting the male connector from my spyder hitch to be compatible with ANY connector from my trailer. I think something is missing as the 9 pin connector to a 4 pin flat does NOT work with the harness for the trailer...and yes, I know that my trailer is not a spyder trailer...it is a kwik kamp pop up...How do I find a 9 pin round FEMALE...to go from my hitch to ANYTHING!!! Where do I get this 9 pin female...:::??? The trailer harness can am sent me is missing the adapter that goes between the male hitch side to the male trailer side...I am frustrated and pissed at can am..No auto parts in this county carries such a small round 9 pin!!!! HELP!!!

Whoa! Let's take a deep breath, and try to sort this all out. Why in the world should you be mad at Can-Am? They produce what they they need for their trailer. If you want to hook up something else, the burden is on you.

Now, exactly what do you have? Parts numbers or a pic would help. The BRP adapter to 4-wire, adapts their trailer to a 4-wire car, not the reverse. If that is what the dealer sold you, you need to try to return it. It will not work for this application. To connect a 4-wire trailer to an RT requires either the RT-622 trailer tongue harness, RT-622 pole harness, or the appropriate Deutsch connector, pins, rear boot, and crimping tool. The BRP parts are available from your dealer, and the Deutsch parts from some electronics suppliers. Any of these would have to be wired in yourself...or by a trailer shop, or used to make an adapter, as above.

Post or PM me with some details, and we can calmly work this out.

Scotty,

You forgot to add the $40 dollars for the wad of electrical tape you used on your setup. :yikes:

:) OK, add $4 for one roll of self-vulcanizing rubber tape, and $8 for a package of waterproof butt splices. If you make an adapter or splice in a new connector, make sure it is waterproof. A road trip is not a fun place to blow your trailer module. nojoke
