Got the RT shocks for my GS...

Like the title says, I got some RT shocks to install on my GS... any tips on the removal and installation???

I had the trunk off already so it was super easy to get to the upper mounts. Others say it's not necessary to remove the trunk.

I don't plan on removing the trunk if I don't have to.... once my back starts feeling better I am going to install them. And I think once I get my new DPS it'll be like a whole new Spyder!

Hey Spydergirl!

Very cool. I've read the should be awesome!

Not sure when you get the new DPS installed, don't they have to pull the trunk off for that - maybe worth your while to have them install the RT shocks on your RS in the middle of that service while it is already off? Just a thought, but I can totally understand if you want to DIY, I would too ;).

Good luck and feel free to post photos of your new shocks!

Hope your back if feeling better soon.
Cheers,
Dean

When you remove the bolts have the spyder jacked up just high enough to remove them without exerting much force.Oh any one other thing try and keep all skin on your knuckles:roflblack:

Thanks for the tip!! :2thumbs:

I can hear the curse words now.... :cus:

Nah--- you'll be fine--- it's super simple-- took me like 20 minutes and I did NOT remove the trunk. Jack the Spyder up from the main frame till the front wheels just barely leave the ground...

Only tricky part is assembly of the new shocks-- putting the spring on the shock. Had a buddy at a local auto shop do it for me-- or you can buy the $30 compression tool thingy to do it.

Getting mine put on in a couple of weeks...looking forward to seeing the difference...don't have the sway bar yet...will see how the shocks do first on their own...

Frankly I think y'all are gonna love it! I've had mine in for 2 weeks now when they did the DPS and It had made a HUGE difference. Takes body roll almost completely away. Especially if you put the sway bar in too. The ride is a little rougher but you can back the perload off a click if you want. I kept mine at full preload. And use your legs a bit more.

The other thing is that when you start getting aggressive you will notice a tendancy to pick up the front tire a bit more, so you'll have to adjust you riding style some. But over-all it's fantastic!

I am doing the same... I am hoping that just the new shocks and DPS will do the trick.

I have had the rt shocks for a while an consider them a great improvement over the stock ride. Much better response to road conditions and a smoother ride.

I recently added the swaybar and it too is a great improvement (in a different way). Turning is a new experience and my passenger is happy.

I'm #9 in line for the dps replacement at the local shop an can't wait to see how that betters the ride.

The one I have are already assembled straight off an RT.

Are you getting the sway bar too are going with the shocks first? I am going only with the shocks, for now...figure a stiffer ride with maybe a little less vibration will do it for now...can always add the sway bar later...I figure the RT shocks are a big enough change to check out for a while...

I'm deciding between adding HIDs or a trunk bag now...hmmmmm...decisions, decisions....need a good, not too expensive trunk bag (hard case, 45Lish) that can attach to the sport rack easily and come off easily as well...

Oh, someone mentioned extra pieces for the sport rack...where the heck do you get those?

I am going to see if just the shocks alone will do the trick... that, and the new DPS.

As for the HIDs, I have HID fogs and plan on getting the headlights done too. Send me a PM and I'll send you a link to a site that sells HID kits for motorcycles for $120.

As for the trunk case, I have the GIVI mount that is specifically for the Spyder. I got it from TwistedThrottle. It mounts through the stock tailpiece. My hubby has the rack from Roadkrome that will mount without having to cut anything, but it doesn't work with the Corbin seat. He has the V46 tech and I have the E55 tech.

I was going to get HIDs but after te other night being in the counrty and having the vision that I did with the stock lights and fogs I'm gonna save the money. These stock lights are plenty good for me! :2thumbs:

bonecrusher,

Be careful of the Roadkrome rack. I can tell you from experience it was not meant to be used with the BRP sportrack. The sportrack is taller than the stock piece that is replaced. I purchased the Roadkrome rack and had it cut/ground twice and it didn't fit. The next cut would have been into one of the mounting holes on each of the Roadkrome mounts (L & R). The end result was a tear in the seat and I gave away the Roadkrome rack. But, if you want to take a chance on it, go for it.

The only problem I had with the Roadkrome bracket was with the Corbin seat, it rubbed and I got a hole in the seat. It fits fine on the hubby's Spyder, but he has the BRP comfort seat.

As for the topic of this thread.... I got the RT shocks installed yesterday and took the Spyder out for a little test ride (not the best test, but a test nonetheless) and I noticed quite an improvement over the stock RS shocks. My stock shocks had nearly 30k miles on them though.

Anyway, I have them on the 5th setting and plan on working my way down from there, but so far I like them where they are at. It should be awesome with the new DPS. This mod seems to be worth the $$, in my opinion.

You have the Whitney, no? I figure if someone can point me to where I can get an extra top piece for the sport rack, I'll have to problems drilling into this one and installing a 'universal' bracket, like the whitney has...

Thoughts?
