Raw Fuel

I drove the wifes spyder yesterday and I'm getting some major raw fuel smell only while riding and running up the rpm from 4000-9000. I've experienced the regular fuel smell at lights and in the city etc. Never had it strong rolling through the throttle before. Occasionally it has been very hard to start. It stumbles around 7-800 and makes it way to idle at 13-1400rpm. I can't find a leak anywhere. Any clue what to check for?

Off the top of my head I can only think off:

1. Not sure if you have taken the panels off yet, but I think it would be a great idea, especially the right side panel - this shows you the evap. can and fuel lines, etc... Check for a leak in there if you have not yet, and park the Spyder with the brake start it and look for leaks. May want to have your safety glasses on also. It is best to trace all of the fuel lines to/from the tank to/from the engine and throttle bodies, etc...

2. Check that the fuel cap on the tank is tight and is screwed on correctly - not cross threaded.

Do you know what caused the leak - hose chaft or cut? Clamp had loosened over time?

How many miles did you have on your Spyder when you found this leak?

What did you do to fix the leak?

Replaced with stainless steel marine grade hose clamp not as quick release but no more leaks

09 Phantom. Has all updates. The only thing different that was done to the bike is put the 23" BRP Ultra Touring windshield this weekend.

Clamp loose after less than 1k miles
Replaced with stainless steel marine grade hose clamp not as quick release but no more leaks
Who needs a quick release on the fuel tank anyway

Like a stainless steel worm clamp for example?:dontknow:

I'm going to check this. It seemed to get stronger the more the gas sloshed in the tank.

I always have filled the bikes up as much as I could get in the tank, and never had an issue.

Problem with Spyder is if you overfill, or top off high (especially when it's really hot out) the gas may expand and go thru the vent system down into the Evap. Canister-- which will take awhile to get rid of the smell.

Not sure where "T.O" is so I don't know if you're in a hot climate??

Others have noticed they can smell more fumes after adding bigger shields and/or wind deflectors.

I would check your hoses regardless. Also make sure during the second update that they re-routed the vent line from the Evap. canister--- or pull that :cus: canister and route your vent yourself to the rear away from any heat (canisterectomy).

If the second update was completed on the bottom of your Spyder you should see a hose like this - which helps take away the fumes.

I'm in Canada. Heat isn't an issue.lol I'll rip it all apart after and go through everything. Last thing I need is her bike to go up in flames with her riding it. I kinda like her.

Getting the same fuel smell. I am just going to take it to the dealer next week and let them figure it out. If they say its "normal" I will tear it down and check for leaks myself. Then maybe check the evap can.

fuel smell/stumpling

I had a similar problem ran good at highway speeds but missing at idle. It finely lost power and lots of fuel smell. Dealer found a bad plug boot that caused the missing and raw fuel was going directly to exhaust. When I shut it down the muffler spouted fire for a few seconds. Check the plug wires and boots for shorting.
