• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

First let me say, I absolutely love my Spyder. I got it in late May and have ridden it about 2500 miles. However, on my last ride in this HOT Georgia heat, I thought my bike was on fire. It wasn't overheating, I kept checking the gauges, but my inner calfs felt like they were burning. When I got home and looked at my legs, they were scorched! Now if I ride 20 minutes in this heat, they get scorched. Anyone having a similar problem? Anyone have a solution? I hate to think that I can't ride it in the summer. HELP!

If this situation came about fairly suddenly (last week it wasn't burning your legs, this week it is), one of the first things to check is the exhaust seals. They are known to break down and let hot exhaust leak out in the engine compartment causing a lot of extra heat.


Same as what doc is calling Y gaskets....

Yikes! They're known to catch fire? Please tell me more about that.

I'll call the dealer in the morning about the Y gaskets.

There have been a few fires. It appears to be a very rare occurence, so do not let it scare you too much. It seems the major thing you want to do is to make sure the steering recall, and all other updates have been done to your Spyder. Especially the extension of the vent hose, as that is one of the things many think may have contributed to the fires.

As for the heat, there is a very good chance your Y gaskets are shot. If the Spyder has less than 12,000 miles on it, I have heard that BRP is replacing them under warranty. Many of us have gone a different route, and are using a much higher quality Honda gasket instead.

Another very good idea is not to wear shorts while you are ryding, no matter how hot it may be outside.
 
Thanks so much. What model or year was the steering recall? Mine is a 2009 SE 5, with about 3600 miles on it.

BTW, I don't wear shorts I wear a First Gear mesh riding suit, jacket, pants, plus boots, socks, gloves, of course full helmet.

This is all really scaring me, guess I better call dealer first thing in the AM.

Any more info out there?

Heat

I've had a problem with heat on the right side mostly on my right foot. Have done most things like, extend the shroud, but in spyderpops air dam, and I may have the new fan coming like is on the 2010 RS, dealer called yesterday and BPR was going to approve it. Because its hot here in AL and GA. I have a little over 3K and have the Honda Y gaskets on hand just have got to replace the yet. 1SG :ohyea:

Don't be scared. The first thing the dealer should do is hook your Spyder up to BUDS and make sure you have all of the updates your Spyder needs. You can double check with them on that, and make sure it happens. :thumbup:

I had to mention the shorts just because there are many who do ryde in them at times. As someone else mentioned above, if it was not that hot before and is now it is most likely the Y gaskets.

The Y gasket replacement may not do much for the heat on your right foot. Once the fan kicks on it blows the hot air directly onto your foot. I thought extending the shroud might help as I have seen some do, but it sounds like it isn't helping you very much.

When the Y gaskets go bad the heat will be directed right at your thighs. The right gasket seems to wear out first all the time, so that leg will get pretty hot before the left one starts to feel the same way.

I am definitely interested in hearing if the new fan cures the problem of heat on your right foot as well. Please post a thread on your experience once you get that installed and have a chance to test it.
 
How do I know if it is the Y gaskets?

I've been having the same problem with terrible heat on the right side since I bought my bike over 1 year ago. Now it is starting on the left side. By contrast, my boyfriend's Spyder has no heat on either side.

How can we tell if it is a bad Y gasket? What do we look for, or listen for? Unfortunately our local dealer's service guys are not helpful, so it
won't help to bring it to them.

Yes! I'm glad I'm here too. (Great explanation about the Y gasket and BUDS - leaving all that up to my dealer.) Calling the dealer as soon as it opens.

One more question, and this sounds so stupid I'm even afraid to write it. But here goes.

The worst of my problem is on the left side, with very hot heat directed at my inner calves. A friend said to wrap the exhaust pipe in heat wrap (the kind they use on dirt bikes) and that would help deflect the heat.

So we did. When I tried it last night, thinking it would solve my scorching problem, smoke starting pouring out of the left vent (after five minutes). Went back home immediately. Husband said well maybe the tape has to weather in (not sure that's the word), so we didn't immediately remove it.

Any thoughts anyone?

That's normal... most of the smoke will go away after a little while.

It'll steam like mad after you wash it too :)

It should help the heat, and it's good for the engine too (keep the heat in the exhaust = hotter air in the exhaust = faster air in the exhaust = better extraction from the engine = better scavenging = higher volumetric efficiency ... err... I'll stop now)

Here is a pic of my right side. When I changed out the Y gaskets. Notice there was no gasket and the heat was getting unbearable.

Its probably the Y-gasket. I think mine is gone before it hits 2000 mi. It's getting pretty hot when I take long rides. Already gotten the Honda gaskets and will do the change over this winter.

And Sny, thanks for the reply about the tape. I feel better. Guess I'll leave it on for awhile. I already smoke on my Synder, now I'll literally SMOKE!

Mine is due to get replaced again (I'm at 26K). Can someone tell me what the part # is on that Honda gasket???
