Ok, I Searched (Oil Pressure)

Got a wild hair and decided to go for a ride today.. way too hot.. started off at 9:20 and ambient air temp was already 93. Filed up and rode about 60 miles at speeds varying between 35 and 65 (one 20 mile stretch at 65).. stopped to get me some water and noted the air temp was pushing 100 as I shut off the Spyder. Didn't like where I was parked so I turned the key to start up and didn't get the normal boot screen, got an orange one saying low oil pressure, oops too late as I had my thumb on the mode button and pressed it..and before the engine cranked the screen went to the normal display and the oil pressure light (the little red one) went out immediately upon starting.. shut the bike down, waited 10 or 15 seconds and turned the key to the run position.. same orange screen with the same message flashed, went away with a second or so, and went to the normal sdisplay..so being the brave soul (or complete idiot) that I am, I fired it up... again, fired right up, no oil light, no messages, idling smooth.. shut it off, got off the bike, grabbed the manual, got me some water, and went to reading... of course that was a waste of time.. I sat in the shade, the Spyder was in the shade, for about 30-40 minutes to cool off.. well it is Sunday, I don't have my phone, don't have the number for road service, so again, the complete idiot kicked in, I jumped on the Spyder, fired it up with everything being total normal (nanny screen, mode button, quick start, no oil pressure message and the little red oil pressure symbol went out as normal.. headed home, temps in the 110, 115 degree range (little temp gauge on the digital screen as the banks were report 98-99).. rode home on a different route through areas of more population with the temp gauge running at 4 bars unless I had to stop then it would creep up to 5, fan would kick in and cool off.. rode a total of 135 miles and when I got home the temp was 104 on the digital display.. stopped 4 or 5 times on the way home to find some shade and water and never had another orange screen.. checked the oil as soon as I got stopped at home (following the procedures as outlined in the manual).. oil is reading at least 1" ABOVE the full line.. checked it 4 times (with time in between) and it stays 1" ABOVE, I have yet to see any oil dripping out of the airbox, but it is early yet... anywho, Spyder now has 176 miles on it, the dealer is closed on Mondays, but they will hear from me on Tuesday and all my riding around here for the rest of the summer will be before 8am or after 8pm...

Any ideas other than a faulty sensor?

Mine is showing this screen at startup sometimes, and also occasionally at shutdown. It goes into limp mode at times, too. It is apparently a software problem, where the system reads the low oil pressure with the engine off, as a fault, and does not reset itself properly. That is how it was explained to me...although I suspect a new oil pressure switch would help. If it does not go into limp mode, the oil light disappears, and the engine is quiet and obviously has oil pressure...I would not worry. If the light stays on and/or limp mode occurs, but the oil pressure seems fine, the work-around is to run the engine at 3,000-4,000 rpm for 10-15 seconds until it resets. Big nuisance. I hope there is a fix soon.

My RT will show that same screen from time to time. I have not figured the sequence that I do to get it. I checked the oil level the first time it happened and it was right on the full mark. Every time it has happened I leave the key on and the screen will go to the Speedometer mode and oil light goes out as soon as it starts. It seems to be a low oil pressure warning, but what makes it only happen so few times. Nothing seems to be wrong. I have over 2,000 miles on it and I have had no problems.

Bill .. the next time you start it and get that message on the screen... press the mode set and turn cancel at the same time and see if you have a code... sounds like a p0524 code.

Thanks Scotty... I was hoping that would be the answer as all seems, sounds and runs well... the oil level bugs me, but I am used to dry sump systems.. my HD would puke all over the driveway on occasion if I overfilled it... scared me the first time, after that I just put an oil pan under it if I let it sit too long with too much oil..

Oh and BTW... did I say in spite of the heat, the orange screen, the more I rode, the more I relaxed and more fun I had... the Blue Spyder Rocks....:2thumbs:

Will give it a try if it comes back... thanks.

I would probably suck out some of the excess oil. I don't know if it will end up in the airbox, though. I have heard no reports of the same problem the RS has. Problem with dealers and oil changes can be that they put in either too little or too much, if they do not use bulk oil. In quarts, a Spyder does not come out even. The dealer is in a no-win situation. The customer is unhappy if all the oil he is charged for is not used, and the customer never likes to see it low. In addition, the dealer feels funny about discarding (recycling) the clean excess. Common problem.

Update....

Talked to my dealer's tech this morning.. gave him the condensed version of my original post.. he said as long as it didn't go into limp mode and the oil pressure orange screen has not come back and it is running smooth, it was most likely the sensor reacting to me starting it back up immediately after shutting it down after a fairly hot ride. As long as I don't have a constant oil pressure warning I will ride it until I go back for my 600 mile check.. as to the excess oil, he said leave it unless it really starts to drip from the airbox as it won't hurt anything else..

This is pretty much what everyone else here has been saying..

I rode it to run an errand this morning (before the temps got up into the 100s) and no problems...

Thanks again all....
