I would like to make a request,

I have 13K on my :spyder2: with the same aluminum tag holder hanging down from behind my TX plate. I have not had any issues with my plate cracking.

It does collect a lot of road tar.:gaah:

Mine not only cracked but broke. I bought a plastic holder and it too broke. Right now I have it duct taped from the backside and put in a metal plate frame to hold it together. I think it was due to the vibration of the spyder. I did use the hook and loop fasteners that come with the spyder and I don't have to have an extra tab for inspection.

I'm trying

to figure out if it is that inspection bracket or the cross winds up here in the panhandle. What is the worst wind you've ridden in? And for how long?

Why could you not just place the sticker on the fender right above the tail light. That would still be near the plate and cause no wind drag what-so-ever. Should not damage your paint and be able to be removed without too much worry.

It wouldn't damage the paint, but removing it would be another story. I could stack them on top of each other, but after a few years that would start looking pretty ugly....but may just have to deal with it.

The good old hair dryer technique has worked wonders over the years when removing stickers. Might be the solution for removing the sticker from the fender. Try it on the one you have now and see. If it starts to peal when heated, you have your answer.

:roflblack:AND YOU WANT BRP TO REDESIGN THEIR PRODUCT TO PREVENT A STATE PROVIDED ITEM FROM BREAKING?

I think I would get a tube of silicone goo/paste/whatever and put a big dollop right next to each bolt hole then stick the plate in place and gently install the bolts with loctite on them so the silicone stays about 1/4" thick. Wait overnight and you should be good to go.
You'll probably have to cut the plate off with a knife but I bet it won't crack or fall off.

Mine broke in the same spot. Can't show a picture because I had to replace the plate. In Missouri we have no inspection bracket on the plate so nothing is hanging down. My license plate hangs below the fender and catches air as you travel down the road. Cheap plate plus no fender support on the bottom is what I think causes this.

Well let's see....every state in the U.S. requires a license plate and people are starting to come out of the woodwork saying their plates are breaking without an inspection bracket. In fact there are very few nations in the world that don't require a license plate.

Sounds like someone needed to bring it up.

Follow up question.

Is this a problem on other makes of bikes?

This is my first bike, so I don't have any background and I have no idea how to find out other than doing a search and going to every web forum on the different makes.

This is not an unusual problem. I have had it for years, and at least a half dozen of my current bikes do it. BRP tried to reduce the possibility by specifying that the lower part of the plate be secured to the fender with 3M Dual-Locks. These are included with the GS/RS version, or at least they were in 2008. Unfortunately, this doesn't always seem to be enough. Anything that can crack fender supports and mounting tabs on the swingarm, and can shake off license light assemblies, is probably going to be hard on plates. I wonder if the new belt tension spec will reduce the vibration, or whether it is actually shock vibration from road bumps? I also wonder why the problem is more prevalent with some Spyders or ryders than others? Tough engineering problem!

Thanks.

Good info for me.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I wonder how much high winds contributes to this? Especially crosswinds....because I have been wondering that same thing, why some bikes/riders and not others?

I don't have an inspection tag or anything else hanging down, but I have the same problem with my license plate cracking and even breaking off. I am on my third plate on this Spyder. I think Florida charges me $29 every time I have to replace a lost or damaged plate. There is a large crack on my current plate.

The problem results from extreme vibration and the fact that there are only two anchor bolt holes in the fender. The plate sort of flaps as it vibrates. Just follow another Spyder down the road for a while and you will understand the amount of vibration the fender is subjected to. I have also had the fender support brackets crack (first Spyder).

I have tried various solutions for this problem and I am still trying. In Florida the plate must be horizontal.

Have you been using the Dual-Locks?

Scotty, I used the Dual Locks and it did not make any difference. My plate was curled up and broken and hanging in two parts from my bolts. I have it duct taped from behind and put it in a metal frame. I tried a plastic frame and the plastic frame actually broke too. So far the metal frame is holding up.

Not sure. I have driven long distances at 70+ MPH with some decent wind gusts and not had any issues. I just spot cleaned my :spyder2: last night and did not see any issues with the fender or plate. My license plate and inspection plate is held on with two bolts and washers at the top. The bottom of my license plate is not secured to anything. I did have an aftermarket metal frame that had the Spyder logo on it (from eBay) and both of them snapped in two at the top. The smaller portion of the frame could not handle the stress of the vibration. As you can tell it cost me two frames to learn this.:gaah:

My bracket also folded up and started to break off so I removed it, and had my inspection sticker put on the swingarm.

:yikes: I just can't imagine seeing my aluminum plate bending and splitting. I haven't heard my dealer mentioning this as a problem. They are still using the same setup on new :spyder2:s.
