There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Service Bulletin: Belt Tension

It looks like that until someone produces the actual bulletin, there won't be much anyone can do...I am getting service done in a few weeks and would like to bring this topic up, but my dealership won't even touch it unless they have data in front of them...

Dealer did mine while they were working on the other issues, even though the bulletin came out after I brought the RTS in. It must have shown up on their computer, either on WebBoss, or via my VIN#.

Call Carlo before taking it in. He will call them to make sure they get it done to your satisfaction. That it what he is there for.

Just had the 600 mile service done yesterday and tech confirmed new setting. He said that the bulletin was across the board for all versions/years and was much easier to perform. Marked improvement!

I just picked up a copy of the "Drive Belt Tension Specification Change" # 2010-6 from our new local today...I just e-mailed copies to Lamonster so hopefully he can post them..I can't...larryd

I called my dealer about this today and was told that they don't do 'service bulletins' for free nor upon request.

The way they explained it to me was that there's a difference between warranty bulletins and service bulletins. Warranty bulletins are paid for by BRP, there's no charge to me and can be done whenever I want (basically a recall). But that that they only do service bulletins during normal service and that there's a charge for them.

I decided to bring my Spyder in anyway because it was just over 500 miles, so they could go ahead and do normal service (plus my mirrors were floppy again).

I'm irritated by their differentiation between service bulletins and warranty bulletins. If BRP is telling people that they should be getting this for free, they really should be communicating this to their dealers better as well.

I posted in another thread what Carlo from BRP told me today.

I'm about to go buy the Gates gauge, but I'm getting some odd numbers when I convert Newtons to lbs. Everything I have found using online conversions says that 450 Newtons equals about 101 lbs. But, looking at the pictures Lamont posted, at the bottom it clearly shows that someone wrote in 450 Newtons = 331 lbs. I find that one kind of hard to believe.

Can someone say for sure what 450 Newtons equals when converted to pounds?

Thanks,
Skidz

450 N = 101.2 lbf
150 N = 33.7 lbf
so 450 Newtons +/- 150 = 101 lbf +/- 33.

Please realize that the Krickit type gauges are not a direct conversion to the sonic meter readings. Please also realize thet the correct procedure calls for jacking the Spyder up until the rear wheel is off the ground (putting minimum tension on the belt?), and calls for taking the average of three readings, with the wheel roated by 1/3 in between readings.

Scotty,

I'm a little confused; actually a lot. If you use the Krickit and you have the rear wheel off the ground and adjust to 101 lbf (450 N) and someone takes their spyder to the dealer and they use the sonic meter, the belt tensions between the two spyders will not be the same? If that's the case, how do you determine the reading you should be getting with the Krikit to equal the sonic meter.

At this point I cannot answer you. Best way is for someone to test with a Krickit after the dealer adjustment, to get a comparison number we can go by. We had a good baseline for the old comparison, but none for the new one as yet. They will never read exactly the same (after conversion) because they use vastly different methods of measurement.....and both are actually not true physical measurements, but interpretations made from the methods used.

Scotty,

Thank you for your reply. I plan on lifting the wheel to get the readings, and doing it in at least 2 or 3 places, so we're good there.

I understand when you say that it's not a direct correlation between the two types of gauges being used, but I figure that if I get pretty close to 101 lbs. or so, I should be well within the ballpark. Hopefully we can get a better reference point when more people have their tension checked and calibrated at the dealers.

Thanks again,
Skidz

I spoke with my dealership today...they will adjust the tension to the 450 mark as per the bulletin. Since I am getting maintenance and some other things done while I'm there, I don't believe they will be charging me for this!

I think the proper choice of dealership, if possible, is a big deal. I've been very fortunate with my dealership as they are good people willing to help out...

Lowered my belt tension last night down to about 150 lbs. Not too hard to do, best to jack it up and then run bike in first (and reverse) to check alignment. Pretty much have the right side about as 'loose' as it can get...

Ride is generally much smoother across the entire RPM range and footpeg vibration is almost non-existent.
