Garmin 550 Installed

We are shipping these as fast as we can. In a previous post, we got these to market too fast! Now everybody wants them yesterday!

We ran 30 of these to start with and they are all gone. I believe the last of that batch ships this week.

The next batch will have an updated slotted hole pattern so you can have easier adjustment as to the positioning of your Garmins.

If you have the first generation, you can adjust the position just by moving the GPS up and using a washer behind the wider slots.

Sorry for the dealy...we are moving as fast as we can on this and all of our Spyder products.

The slow market has forced inventory reduction with everybody, including our suppliers. Now the orders are coming in and we are scrambling to catch up. We really appreciate everyones patience, believe me when I say we are busting butt to get you all your stuff ASAP. The good news is that all of our Spyder products are selling out as fast as we can make them! So thanks for your support and that just means we can keep making more Kewl Spyder stuff..

Matt

Thanks Matt. I've had one on order for a few weeks too but my RT-S has not come in yet so I've nothing to install it on. Looking forward to everything to come in and get started.

I just got finished making my own mount when out of the blue.............I get an e-mail that the KewlMetal one shipped.

See how things work out ??

In any event, I have my Zumo up and running on the RT S as of tonight. My wife pointed out that I couldn't use that lame old Honda splash screen, so I was inspired.

Now if someone can get an RT-S as a vehicle icon. I've already made a request to Garmin through their Garmin Parking Lot. Maybe if enough people make the request they might be more receptive. Here's a link if your interested.

Marc,

The bracket also mounts the 660 which is wider. Also, you have to accommodate the bend dies on the inside bend.

Like I said, try the washer behind the slot using only the 2 bottom screws (more than enough) and you will have quite a lot of adjustment. The hole patterns will evolve as I get more information and try different GPS units.

Matt

I made the change as you suggest above and found the position to be much improved. I slid the Zumo mount to the top of the slots. I can now fully open the center console door & the rather odd shaped top of the bracket (at least, for the Zumo 550) is no longer so visible. No problems getting to the ignition switch.

Thanks,

I've got my Garmin mounted with a homemade mount. Still waiting for delivery of the Kewlmetal mount so I can switch them out. In the meantime, rather than making a cover for the naked Garmin mount, I built a blank to replace the Zumo when it's doing duty as an automotive GPS.
Here's a photo. The picture looks better than the actual piece, but you get the idea.

My Garmin 550?

I just ordered my Garmin 550 and will have it Monday. I ordered a mount and was told it was being shipped fedex. I'm assuming they've got mounts in stock now. I don't have a torque wrench to torque to 30# so I guess I'll need to find one.

I have a scala ryder2 (cardo) so I'm hoping it will link up. Does this unit also has an internal speaker for car use? Can I link via cable to the cardo? What cable would I need?

Thanks in advance.

It would be interesting to see how the OEM mounted Zumo 660 addresses this.
I had the factory installation of my Zumo 660 mounted on my 2010 RT-SM5. None of the problems that you mention came up. Maybe I can take a pic this evening and post it so y'all can see it.
I did have some major electrical problems regarding the factory installation. They appear to have forgotten to attach a ground wire and also a 12V supply line. I had to wire those in myself.
Oh well, win some, lose some.

Cardo Scala is bluetooth right ?
It will link bluetooth from your phone to a headset. The Scala becomes the headset.

Ther is no internal speaker or microphone for car use. The Zumo 550 comes with two separate mounting cradles, one for the car and a second for the motorcycle. The motorcycle mount comes with a 3.5 mm plug to connect it to your MC audio system. There is also a separate microphone plug to connect an external microphone. You won't need these if you use the Scala.

The car cradle comes with it's own speaker and microphone, so when you have the 550 in the car, you can hear the audio directly from the cradle and teh mic picks up your voice.

Did I explain that clearly ?

Yes you did. Thanks for the help. Someone told me that I could plug into the Garmin with a cable running to my scala headset also. Do you know about that option?

Sorry, I have no information on that. I have a Starcom 1, that's a hardwired system.
Yes, the wires are a bit of a pain, but the upside for me is I don't have to charge my helmet(s).
If you want to run wires from your helmet, why choose the Scala ?

I can't say that I really want to except that on the RT my wife and I will take turns driving and I was wondering if we would keep needing to get paired with the system every time we switch?

Well, my mount arrived today and I must admit I'm not that impressed either. The suggestion that we use 2 washers in the bottom slots so the centre lid will stay open, and I quote "Like I said, try the washer behind the slot using only the 2 bottom screws (more than enough)" sounds like a cop out to me on a poorly researched product. If Garmin had thought that 2 screws were enough then I think they would have only put 2 there to start with. I would rather not have my $1000 GPS bounce down the road for the sake of a 50 buck bracket...
Sorry Matt, I think you dropped the ball on this one.

I know the Garmin has an option under blutetooth that allows you to switch from one device to another once they've been paired. I've only paired my Garmin with one phone at an given time, and once it's paired it will detect the phone automatically. I can only imagine that it does the same for the headset.

I'm wondering if you can talk between riders and still automatically hear the Garmin when it sends a command? That's what I 'm trying to find out.

Not sure with other systems, but this is possible with the Starcom1. Others may be similar.

The Scala Q2 will switch to the Garmin every time it talks to you and override your Music and/or conversation.
However if you are on the phone the garmin will wait until you hang up and then the Garmin will give you its message. If the garmin wanted to give you more than one message it will play them all one after the other as soon as you hang up the phone.
After all of this you can resume your conversation.
I hope this helps.
