hand brake survey

yep I am forgoing the hand brake and going to install some type of floor board. Just sent my brakets back to magic man 20 percent restocking fees ouuuccccccchhhh

One thing's for sure, there are plenty of great mods out there that don't work for everybody. I bought those same highway brackets back in April and they didn't do much for me. I transfered them to dltang's Spyder and made her two different versions of an extension bracket to use with her floorboards. She tweaked it until she found what works great for her. We've taken a beating on selling used mods, sometimes much worse than 20%. Because its sometimes hard to envision exactly how well a mod will work for you, I am prepared for the possibility that some portion of that money (or all of it) will be lost if I decide to return, resell or just take off the mod and leave it sit in the garage.

Modify to handbrake

Hi all, I lost my right leg in motorcycle accident last July. I am purchasing a Spyder and will need to modify to hand brake, I would appreciate hearing about all of the different modifications so I can evaluate and choose the best for me. Thanks

Thanks, I found that website last night, living in the ozark mountains I need to be sure i can always stop. I have a C-Leg, but want the option.

Live today for tomorrow is not promised..........;)

I have ISCI handbrake setup also. For those of us fortune enough to have both legs, they still get stiff from time to time and not always in the correct position to apply brakes quickly in an emergency. I would not be without it.

Personally... I won't install floorboards or highway pegs of any kind unless I do the hand brake first. At least the stock riding position keeps my foot right near the brake.

I know it is just my opinion. I do not miss the hand brake terribly, but I do want one again as that opens up my options.

The folks at BRP really are quite the idiots if they didn't also recognize the disabled ryder demographic that is out there. I can see with the 08/09 models but can't understand why it is not a factory option at this point... Yeah -yeah... BRP and Dealer liability... But folks.. Those dealers are already working on atv's and bikes with hand brakes.

If you setup your highway pegs correctly, you should have no problem healing the stock brake. I can't guarentee that cause I have the ISCI floorboards with the brake extension, but that is no problem for me with size 10 shoes.

Is that kind of derogatory talk really necessary? I don't remember any of the major auto manufacturers catering to this demographic. Everything is done by secondary vehicle conversion businesses, or in the aftermarket. BRP created the platform. That is a positive thing. Some aftermarket manufacturers have responded with the necessary pieces. That is good, too. No need to start throwing rocks.

As ablebodied im quite happy with the footbrake (used to own motoguzzie) but can understand the need for a 'front brake' for some people. I would personally go for a full hydraulic system as i dont really trust cables anymore.
I also belive that the spyder is such a unique design that some one within the BRP family would have thought that it would be a defined market for this type of option.
The engineering would not be that expensive ( if it hasnt been done already) and would make a vauable factory option for BRP who could charge an even greater preimum for this.
litigation surely cannot enter into the fray as front brakes are a common feature on all ATVs and Motorbikes. We need to start taking some responability for our own actions and make the lawyers less rich.
Just my 2 bobs worth..........:chat:

Wasn't it a legal issue to NOT go with a hand brake, not a business decision? There are threads on this from like 1.5 years ago...something to do with anti-lock brakes and something else...Scotty might remember...I don't...

Sorry. I could have chosen a better word/phrase there - like "short sighted". A factory option would be nice. Keep in mind something... The Spyder is a motorcycle, at least according to my state. Motorcycles come with hand brakes. That is why this gets debated every time here. As for the auto manufacturers... They never had a car in modern times that they made with a hand brake that they could even omit.

I will agree that a hand brake would have been nice. Not only for riders used to two wheels, but for those with physical challenges or highway peg accessories, too. BRP has made it clear, though, that they wanted to divorce the roadster from motorcycles, and cater to the new riders who may have found a hand brake confusing. It could have been done, but they consciously chose not to do so, and repeated that decision with the new RT. All companies make choices like this. One concentrates on cupholders, while another features a sunroof or heated seats. We buy what they sell, then modify it to suit our specific needs or desires. Nothing sold fits everyone's requirements to a "T".

Just wanted to remind everyone that ISCI has been manufacturing and selling handbrake kits for over a year now. I have not had one returned yet. We offer a 15% discount to all that are limited physically. Our brake system is independent of the stock system and still brakes all three wheels, not a cable system. You can use the handbrake or the footbrake, one or the other or both at the same time. It is a real investment for your spyder but a quality piece that in our opinion is worth the money. We currenty have a few brakes in stock for the RS (building more as I type). We have prototyped a brake the the RT and displayed it last week in Daytona. If anyone has any questions or would like more information let me know as I will be happy to help in any way possible. We also have several new products that should be on my web page later this week. As always all of our products are made in the USA with domestic materials and hardware. 54 Americans at ISCI working to make your spyder experience a better one.

Yes! A hand brake would make a big big diffrence! just for extra safty, If it saved one life it would be ten times worth it, even just for rolling them around by hand or loading them would help alot, One of can-am guys told me when were were at then officail can-am launch of the new name, and they were also releasing the new 800 renagade told me when i asked the question, will you ever put a hand brake on it? Quote " you must not ride you don't need a hand brake" ama two time semio pro, gncc amature class 3 time winner and factory sponsered redline racer.......Next year low and behold a hand brake! So even tho you don't have to have it, it would be really nice!

Handbrake a great improvement

I installed the ISCI handbrake last year. The handbrake allows the rider to apply extra pressure to the slave cylinders, which improves braking power noticeably (at least in my case -- I considered the stock brake with only a foot pedal to be kinda lame). Using the handbrake by itself produces shorter stopping distances than with footbrake only, and using both handbrake and footbrake together is like running into a wall. This is an unsolicited observation by a non-ISCI employee.

ISCI Handbrake

Just wanted to know if anyone wishes they had done anything different with their hand brake.. I am going to be putting one on and want to be sure of the right one Thanks Jim

Had a ISCI Hand Brake Assembly Modified installed on my SE-5 before I left for Daytona Bike Races. Normally I do my own installs but had the Spyder in for service so I went ahead and had Bruce ( the Spyder Master Mechanic at South Texas Suzuki) install mine. He was very impressed with the quality and functioning of the unit.

Kelly, (owner of STS along with husband Ken) liked it but it is a bit of a reach for short fingers. I also have short fingers and would prefer a lever design for a shorter reach. I have over 22 K miles on Spyders w/o the hand brake and I was comfortable with braking capabilities. However, having added the hand brake, I am even more comfortable when braking. My fingers have better sensitivity for braking than my foot. Maybe that comes with being 72.

Just got back from Daytona and 3100 miles. For what it's worth, I like having added the hand brake system. Like many things, this is my individual choice and experience. Now it's your call. RIDE SAFE!

Bob , Kerrville, TX. :2thumbs:
