How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Well, this one has been a long time coming.

In 2023 I had to quit riding my Goldwing due to an adverse reaction to long term statin use. For a while, it was doubtful I would ever have the strength to ride again, much less do the long solo cross country trips I so enjoy. Long story short, due to a couple of excellent doctors, my statin problems have been reversed and I'm probably in better condition than I was 10 or 15 years ago - not counting being 78 (growing older is not for the faint of heart).

In December of 2025 I purchased a used 2024 RT Limited and began outfitting it for Iron Butt rides and cross country work. I have completed a Saddle Sore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours), and I know the bike and I can do it. So now it's time for the kind or riding I really like.

I'll be departing Los Angeles on the morning of the 29th of July for a roughly 7,000 mile trip and will be back home the week of the 24th of August. The highlights for me are a reunion of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association in Louisville, Kentucky; a stop in Luckenbach, Texas (spent way too many weekends there when I lived in Texas); a visit to a Marine buddy in Florida; a niece who works at Monticello; an old Army friend in New Jersey; Vince Gill at the Ryman, a shop in Connecticut from which I got some wonderful preserves during a Secret Santa thing last year; Maine; and other NE States I have never ridden; the Iron Butt Iowa sign; a Riverboat Hotel in Nebraska (who knew?); before returning to Los Angeles. Additionally, I will be collecting bonuses (boni?) on the Tour Of Honor and National Parks for the IBA National Parks Tour Silver award.

OK, so here is the proposed route - subject to a lot of change. One real possible big change will be to pick up Route 66 after leaving the River Inn Resort. We'll see when we get there.

Here is a link to my Spotwalla tracking for this trip --> https://spotwalla.com/trip/92f1-2b5d34-f680/view. It will be active on the 29th. You can follow along if you are really bored and have nothing better to do.

I'll be updating this as I go along. Probably not every day, but every couple of days at least.

It's going to be interesting and fun.

That looks like an interesting trip. I see you will be passing through the heart of NC (Raleigh area). If you message me I could possibly meet you for a meal and some good old southern sweet tea (sorry, it can't be for a beer, but I don't drink). I wanted to head back out west this August, but I am thinking that the weather might be a little to unpredictable and have decided to wait until late May, early June time frame. Have a safe trip and keep us updated.

That's a great trip. I hope you are able to see and enjoy some of the USA.
I will be reading your posts.

If you post the dates and locations you might find some local riders that would like to meet up to ride some of the route with you.

I sent you a PM about the reunion and someone you may know.

Some of that is doable as I'm sort of on the clock to hit the reunion. After that it's sort of how long I feel like riding on any given day. Right now I know that I'll be in Tucson the evening of the 29th staying with my step-son and his wife. The 30th I plan to be in Ft. Stockton; the 31st Round Rock, Texas; August 1st - Texarkana; 2nd - Memphis; 3rd and 4th - Nashville (hoping to meet up with a member and ride his RT with the upgraded shocks); 5-9 August - Louisville (Reunion) and some riding around Lexington (Road Runner "Shamrock Tours").

After that, it's all pretty much up in the air as to where I'll be and when. I'll try to update things as I go along.

I'd love to meet up with folks for a non-alcoholic (for me) beverage, meal, or whatever.

Day 1 in the books. Los Angeles to Tucson to spend the night with my Engineer Step-Son and his Doctor wife. Boring ride on I-10. Hot and humid. Saw 125°F on the dashboard and the cruise control would not engage. After the temp got back into the teens for a while, it started working again.

No Tour of Honor bonuses today as I already got the one in Phoenix. I'll get the Tucson one tomorrow morning as I leave town.

The new tires feel a lot different than the factory ones. A lot more road feel and feed back. Continental ContiPro and General AltiMax.

OK, catchup day.

Day 2 saw me leave way later than I had planned, but the boy had a WiFi problem that I helped him figure out, or at least gave him some more research to do. Temps were better - stayed around 115-118 all day, except when I went through a bit of a downpour, then it dropped to 108.

I did pick up a Tour of Honor (ToH) bonus in Tucson on my way out of town.

Great scenery on I-10 (boring!)

As a young person, we stopped there once. It's sort of a rite of passage for road trips through Arizona. I'm not going to spill the secret - you have to see it for yourself.

Finally made it out of Arizona

PXL_20260730_224516742.RAW-01.COVER.jpg

This place has always fascinated me, so I stopped to see. Good fudge.

Construction on I-10 kept me from taking a shot of leaving New Mexico and entering Texas. More long and boring Interstate riding until I reached my hotel for the night. Stayed at the Avid in Ft. Stockton. Nice new place. Sort of leaning to the "hip" millennial crowd. Still, nice stay.

Day 3 - Ft. Stockton to Round Rock, Texas

Nice short day. A bit more boring I-10 until close to Fredericksburg. I love riding the Texas Hill Country. Nice roads, beautiful scenery and always something interesting to see. Anytime I get to Central Texas a stop in Luckenbach is a must. I spent more than a few inebriated weekends there after Vietnam. It's gotten way too commercialized, but memories keep dragging me back.

First a quick stop in Junction to another ToH bonus

Why is there a submarine and the museum of the War in the Pacific in the middle of Texas? Well, because Admiral Nimitz was from Fredericksburg

PXL_20260731_212349849.RAW-01.MP.COVER.jpg

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from there is Ranch Road 1376, which will lead you to Luckenbach. Back in the day, you had to know about the Peach Stand that was at the corner in order to find the place.

It's still a bit difficult as this is the turnoff into town. Not a big sign pointing the way.

This used to be the main hangout, other than the open air dance floor. There was a "General Store" in the back end where everyone congregated, sang, drank, and partnered up for washer pitching (sort of like horseshoes, but with two-inch fender washers).

Day 3 continued...

Junction also had this converted old gas station that I found fascinating

PXL_20260731_201738313.RAW-01.MP.COVER.jpg
I love repurposed old buildings. We have a Starbucks locally (well, in Hollywood) that is also a repurposed gas station. Pretty cool place to have saved from destruction and replacement with a generic building.

You never know what you're going to find in the hills. How about a castle?

They are supposed to have an excellent selection of locally grown wines. The explosion of vineyards in the Hill Country is amazing. There is even Brickyard Wines by A.J. Foyt.

The CAF (used to be the Confederate Air Force back in the day) has a place in Burnet.

I found a Schlotzsky's for dinner. Probably my favorite sandwich of all time, You can't get them in California, so whenever I am in Texas, it's a must stop for me. Turns out there is one in Tucson. Next time I visit Pat and his wife, they will have to endure a Schlotzsky's with me.

So tonight in Round Rock. Staying at the Aloft by Marriott. Nice place. Again with the "hip" 1950 decor and minimalist vibe. And Marriott has changed over from Pepsi to Coke. Yea!

Enjoy it! If you need anything heading out of the Hill Country tomorrow let me know. I'm in Waco, you're welcome to the shop, or anything you need.

Safe travels!
