09 Spyder GS lost key - is it possible to program new keys to the Spyder?

I have a 2009 Spyder GS with a key that turns the ignition but the chip in it is not for that bike. So when I try to start, the screen says "BAD KEY". I took it to the dealer and they said they cannot program this key to this bike. I am reading something about buying NEW keys and being able to program them to the unit, is this possible? I think the reason most people have issues when they lose the key is that they don't have a key to copy the cuts onto but I have the cuts to make the ignition work, I just don't have the chips for it to work. Can someone with real experience please help? I don't mind buying new 2 new keys to get them programmed but I need to know if it's possible without having a current working chipped key.

Unfortunately nothing can do without least one working (programmed ) key (as far as I know). Without a working key, you would have to replace the DESS. A couple of things can interfere with the chip in these keys: another chip key within range of the antenna at the ignition - first one read wins, so it's good to have only 1 key; key too cold, it's mentioned here before that someone left their key in the garage & got the same failure, then went inside with the key for a while, then returned & once warmer, the same key worked fine. Also, another unfortunate possibility; damaged wires from theft attempts or rodents. I hope you can find a working key. Prior to 2014, keys could be cloned; after that, they can only be added; but both require at least 1 working key.

Where did the key(s) that belong to this Spyder go?

Without a key that will actually start your Spyder, you're going to be SOL in a big way.

As said above, you're going to have to purchase a new DESS and with your Spyder being a 2009, you may have a BIG problem finding one.

So, you’re kinda in a pickle here. What Peter told you in your other thread is correct. You can’t disable DESS 1.0 with BUDS. New DESS modules are showing not available.

You say that you have a chipped key, and that this chipped key will turn the switch. But, you say that it is “not the chip for that bike”. Then, how did you get here? Is this a key and switch from a different bike?

(Didn’t mean to step on you, Albec. We were typing at the same time)

To answer everyone's questions, I purchased this repo unit as is from auction. It came with a key but the key would not turn the ignition. I took the ignition off and took it and the key to a lock smith and they changed the tumblers to make the key work on the ignition. But the unit will not start (says "bad key") I assume because this key never went with this unit. So there is zero option of finding the key.

Does anyone have the part number for the DESS for this unit? Where is the DESS located on this model?

I have BUDS1 with the Megatech license.
I know I can add and delete keys. I only got one key with my Spyder. It had two keys programmed.
I bought a new key online, had it cut and I programmed it to my bike without any problems.

IIRC, I did not need to have the working key in the ignition to add another key.
You do have to have the correct generation chip key for the DESS system on your bike.

If you were closer, I'd be willing to give it a shot. Hopefully, someone in your area can help.

The issue here tho Cobranut, is that his bike is a 2009 GS with the 1st Gen DESS, and for that, you need the Red Master Key and a 1st Gen key with chip, plus someone who knows the process to add keys.... So yeah, on YOUR 2015 Spyder with its 2nd Gen DESS, you didn't need a working key, but that's not the case with the earlier models, cos your DESS situation was completely different to his... :(

I think cobramadness, that your best bet might be to source a 2nd hand 2007-2012 Spyder DESS & ignition barrel with all the associated bits AND at least one working key from somewhere like eBay, a parts recycler, etc, and possibly even a working ECU; and then try to find someone who can either clone the working key &/or fit & program all that to your Spyder.

Without doing that, I'm somewhat concerned that you juuust might have bought yourself a pretty swish looking 2009 GS shaped Lawn Ornament!

From first hand experience with buying a 2010. Since you have had a lock shop make a key that works. Buy a key a chipped key and have it cut from the key you have. Buy DESS PART NUMBER 710001195 this is the newest that will work. It is for a 2013 model. After you install the new DESS turn on the bike. The new DESS will recognize and program the first key that activates it. After that you will need to find a dealer that still has the Red Master Key for any more keys you want, up to 4 keys can be added.

You cannot add keys via BUDS on 2013 and older. You can only program new keys to the bike using a RED programming master key and at least one good key already programmed. Without a functioning key, you must replace the DESS and ignition cylinder which came as a set with new keys already programmed. Those parts and the red master key are all obsolete and no longer available. A 2013 or older bike with no functioning key is a parts bike.

He could ask around the membership if he could use a master key for a bit, there are a few still out there.

He has a normal key blank cut that turns the ignition switch on. Use this key to have a factory key cut. Only need to replace the DESS to the new for a 2013. You don’t need to replace the ignition switch; you can’t get one anyway. The new DESS will recognize the first factory key used to turn the ignition switch on. If you want to any extra keys you will need the Master key for this.

The problem is, DESS module part number 710001195 is obsolete and no longer available new from BRP. A Used one will not help.

Again, a 2013 or older Spyder without a functioning key is a parts bike and cannot be repaired with currently available parts.

Called PartPitStop.com say the DESS part number 710001195 is still available but on back order. Should be available early March

Its been on 'back order' with a delivery beyond 90 days for well over a year. Still a valid part number, but its long since been unavailable. It could be available again someday, if enough were ordered to make it viable to sell.

Update-
Dealer said I need to buy 710001195 dess module & 710002971 ignition and 2 new keys and they can program. The ignition doesn't get programmed right? Just the dess module? Because I don't believe I need to buy an ignition since I have one with a working key. My thought is buy 2 NEW keys and copy my cuts onto the new keys and trash the old key. Program 2 new keys to new dess module and ready to go? Can anyone confirm that the immobilizer reader on the ignition doesn't get programmed?

I don't understand this discussion about a red master key. If I buy a new dess module, I don't have to worry about a red master key right? Just 2 new blanks?
