• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Where can I get a 2010 RT parking brake cable? Any other options?

My wife's RT has almost 40k miles on it. I think the parking brake cable is stretched and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know where to get one? Can't get it from Can-Am, it is discontinued. Local dealer can't get it either. Parts guy at dealer doesn't think the cable for a 2011 will work. I can find 2011 cables, but not 2010.
Is it possible to put new cable in the shield and attach cable ends?
Thoughts?

The 2010 RT parking brake adjustment is done through the rear parking brake pulley. It is splined. If the proper adjustment can't be made, you remove the pulley and move it one spline at a time until proper adjustment is met. Check the service manual for the procedure.
 
Allen has asked a good question, has it stretched totally to the end? If so, I would really like to know what the difference is between the 2010 to 2012, or 2011, if it's longer by a little then I would think you could reroute it in a way so that it would work. I have a new cable for a 2012 in my shop; if you have the length of yours, I could measure mine. PM me if you have the information, and maybe a picture! I can't believe that they changed too much between the two. Jetfixer is right, there procedure to adjusting that caliper look it up!! Do you have the manual on the bike?

Hey Ricky. There's just a bit of mis-diagnosis here. Cable stretching, if it occurs at all, is so minor that adjusting for that is well within the capability of the adjustment mechanism. Instead, adjustment of the cable is required to compensate for wear of the rear brake pads. Something to check for.

If you can't take up the slack in the cable with the two adjusting nuts at the rear - which work just like any other cable adjuster - make sure you go the right direction - then you do what is sometimes called the "major" adjustment. Remove the rear pulley, turn the shaft CW one spline, re-install and try again. The primary thing to remember is that, with the parking brake disengaged, that you adjust the cable so that there is still spring tension on the cable. But, that the parking brake doesn't drag. That prevents the cable from bowing at the front pulley and prevents the possible disconnection of the cable end up front. I owned that era of Spyder for 10 years. Never experienced any cable stretching. And provided that the rear pulley is put back on properly after a brake job, never had to do the "major" adjustment. Good day.

Thanks for the help. I will get it put back together and make sure the actuator is adjusted properly. That may be what the problem is. I had forgotten about that.
 
Update on the parking brake issue

The cable will not move in the sleeve without a lot of effort.
I have removed it from the bike and have been trying to get cleaners and lubricants through it.
A friend told me that Summit Racing might be able to help with this.
Any thoughts on freeing the cable? That explains why the brake wasn't releasing
 
Find a suitable pan & marinate it in Marvel Mystery Oil (it can stain!) This has done well for me & family on various projects (stubborn industrial grade machining equipment right thru to rusty welded cast IRON!) It does take time, but the simplicity of marinating it allows you to be off doing other stuff - just let it set & marinate for at least a day or so; then check it for improvement; & if none, set it some more -repeat till satisfactory. I can’t suggest heat, as that might damage the plastic cover/sleeve.

Hopefully at the end of an aggravating issue. Found a guy at a little scooter shop that makes and repairs cables. He pulled the old cable out of the outer sheath and replaced it with a new cable. The coating on the old cable had come loose, bunched up and was keeping the cable from moving. When it finally locked up, it destroyed the front pulley and the micro-switch. I have replaced the pulley, waiting for the switch to get here so I can reassemble.
A little less than $50 is what he charged.
I would still like to know what the specs on a cable for a 2011/2012 is. In the pictures, it looks identical, but I guess the length may be different.

If the brake cable is the same as the 2012 rt you can get one on Ebay, I just looked it up
 
Kinda late to the party here, it seems you are on the way to solving your problem. Just for information as you already realize this from your scooter shop experience, but back in the day any bicycle shop or motorcycle shop could build cables, instead of waiting for parts to come from England, Germany, Italy or some eastern European country. When cables stretched but otherwise were in good shape it was a simple thing to shorten it and solder a new end on. Or a new cable could be manufactured on the spot. Did it many times when I had my shop.

You are right in so many ways but having to wait forever for it to be at his door! I have ordered a lot of stuff and for the most part have not waited more than a week, I have had good luck I guess from what you're saying. And as far as being late to the party, he was still trying to get the spec's on the 2012 cable because he still doesn't think there's a way around his issue, as of the 5th of Dec.;) If he wants the spec's I can give him a picture and measurements of one I have as a spare in my shop if he P.M's me.(y)
