• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Nothing above seemed to have anything near what I am looking for.

I use earbuds when I ride under my helmet when I ride and find myself wanting to adjust the volume up or down based on road and wind noise.

Does anyone have any experience with in-ear Bluetooth earbuds that have a separate remote control for basic functions such as volume? Does such a device exist?

I am not looking for a helmet solution, but rather a portable in-ear solution that will allow me to adjust volume as well as help with directly blocking wind noise (act like an earplug). IMO, comm systems don't protect from wind and do not block noise or sound as good as ear buds.

Does such an animal exist or perhaps a secondary device that could be used to add this functionality?

Yes, my current earbuds are blutoothed to my cell, that I keep in my jacket pocket. I don't use currently use GPS. You say "device" - what device? That's what I'm looking for ~ I assume any device would be part of the earbuds. Any controls would have to be large enough for a gloved hand to use, so a small wired set with controls would not be a good alternative at this point. Thanks.

I actually had read that second thread. ;) I'm not sure of the legality in my State regarding ear buds, I will need to look into that, but my use of earbuds is not to drown out all outside sound. In fact, I hear a lot around me, including traffic, car horns, cross sign buzzers and time down beeps etc.. I'm not looking for noise cancelation, just better isolation than in helmet speakers. To compete with the wind noise I use to crank up the music on helmet comm. system and it not only sounded terrible would hurt my ears when you added wind noise.

You might want to consider a Bluetooth connected motorcycle helmet comm. system (only need one if riding solo). Some have a large jog wheel that acts as volume control and are glove friendly (Sena brand and or others). Pair comm and earbuds to phone and you can control volume, skip tracks, take/refuse calls etc. I use wired buds to my Sena 20S (no wireless earbuds to charge). Amazon has name brand and off brands also search motorcycle helmet comm.
 
I don't have BT ear buds, but I would think you could control your ear buds thru your "device" which is your phone. I am using a SENA and wired "in ear monitors" which are basically ear buds. I have been wearing them for several years. Like you, the helmet speakers just don't cut it, the ear buds for me knock out a bunch of the wind noise.

Which ones. I have tried a couple and they are a little uncomfortable. Probably doesn't help that I also wear glasses. Thx
 
One of the issues with earbuds is that they may not be comfortable to wear with a helmet.

If you can get past that, how about an earbud that's voice controlled?

An Amazon Alexa enabled set, or if you're into Apple, there's Siri.

I have a set of Sony noise canceling earbuds that work as described above, I don't use them when riding though as I'm almost positive that they'll be uncomfortable with a helmet. Instead, I have the Cardo intercom system that uses JBL speakers in the helmet and they sound fantastic! I can use Alexa or Siri with the system. Of course, in helmet speakers aren't going to help with wind noise, unless you crank em up!

I use these with my half helmet, haven't tried them with the full helmet, as it has a Cardo, but I think they would fit under there easily. These also do double duty of blocking road noise, providing some tunes and nav from my phone, and is easy to control via the neck "collar".

I also utilize a SENA unit on my helmet. But didn't like using the supplied speakers. Ordered custom earplugs from a gal that is an audiologist that has been doing custom earplugs for motorcyclists for a while. They work great as they serve dual purpose of providing audio from my phone via GPS or music and cut down on the wind noise since they are custom molded.

I think I may have found what I was looking for. I just needed to change my way of thinking a little. Rather than look for an earbud with a remote control, how about a remote control for my phone?

I'm going to try something like the below two items, but honestly I am not impressed with either one. If they work as I suspect they should, then that's great. At the price point of the two items, I don't expect a long service life out of them and I can already see issues with their design. Both devices seem to check all the boxes:

  • Does not require comm device
  • Allows use of any earbuds for audio
  • Simple controls
  • Can be used with multiple helmets*

If it works, I'm thinking maybe I'll design and make my own. How hard could it be to buy a Bluetooth module, a very small Arduino with an encoder to control volume and a few basic functions? I can power it off the Spyder (no batteries needed) and design it so the only part visible would be the rotary dial. (I like the simplicity of the JBL Click) The single rotating dial seems to be easier to use with gloves.

I use Samsung Buds Pro 2. They feel good with my helmet on, I don't even notice them. The useful feature is they can be voice controlled with my Samsung phone using Bixby. No hand controls are really needed. Just say "Bixby... volume up/down, noise cancellation on/off" ...etc...

The only issue I have with the ear buds, they typically fall out of my ears when removing my helmet. Having them tethered together would be nice.
 
I searched you tube for diy custom ear buds or something like that. You use some stuff shooters make custom ear plugs. The fellow explains how to make it work with ear buds.
 
broderp, what about APPLE AirPods? They can be controlled by your phone. Mount the phone on the handlebar.

I'm not sure if that would accomplish my goal. My personal phone is also Android. I don't "Apple" anything. lol But thank you for the suggestion!



I wound up ordering the JBL Click. Single dial control, the most intuitive IMO. Got it at a great price as well, I hope it works.
