There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Wirring of my Zumo 550

Let me get this straight...without going in the cold garage and looking, are you saying that the zumo 550 comes with a fuse already intact and when the dealer installed the zumo onto the bike, it is already protected? Why, then, does it not turn off when the key is taken out?
A fuse is not a switch, it does not turn a device on or off, it only protects it against over-current (too many amps). If it is wired to a circuit that is hot all the time (unswitched), or to the battery directly (with an additional fuse at the battery to protect the wire), it will be on all the time. If it is wired to a circuit that comes on with the ignition, like the switched accessory circuit, it will only be on with the ignition. Yours is likely protected, at least at the GPS, but it wouldn't hurt to check, or ask your tech how it was wired, and to what.

I'm at work all day but this topic has really piqued my interest. I'll call the dealership but I doubt they'll remember. I'd likely have to take the panels off and see the connection at the battery. I'd assume the zumo fuse would be right off the battery, as shown in the directions posted above? It looks like it is toward the end of the wires...if my zumo 550 came as shown (as it should have), then it had the fuse on it and I'd certainly hope they didn't remove it! I would just have to know where to look...

As far as the fuse being a switch, I understand if it's directly attached to the battery that it will still get juice...only shutting off if there's a short/surge, etc...Scotty, thanks for the clarification on that...I was trying to figure out how it might have been done...hmmm..

The Zumo fuse will be near the end of the Zumo pigtail. That will be close to the front of the machine, I suspect. Since the battery is in the rear, they would have to run an extra wire from there to the fused pigtail. This wire should be fused, too. They could also have tied into the unswitched accessory circuit off the fusebox. There are other possible combinations. If they did not modify the Zumo pigtail, and followed proper techniques in running the feed wire, you should be fine.

Well, no matter what anybody does, I still don't believe in unfused circuits. I've seen too many fires.

:agree: When i add any thing fog lights heated jacket etc. i go direct to the battery '' WITH A FUSE.'' = Burnt out fuse 10 cents = burnt out Spyder $$$$$$$:yikes:
Probably never happen but if a wire does short out, that 10 cents will be the best investment you'll ever make.

One other Zumo 550 point. I have on occasions had my Zumo 550 fail to power on - probably half a dozen times over the last couple of years. I can reset it according to the owner's manual, but it makes no difference. It will not power on when power is applied nor when the power button is used. The only fix I have found for this is to remove the battery pack in the back & then reinstall it. This has fixed it every time. A allen wrench (hex) is required to do this. I have purchased a cheap, fold-up style set of allen wrenches and placed them in every vehicle I have, to make sure i can fix this problem when/if it occurs again.

Haven't had that problem but I am going to follow-up and find out about the installation of the zumo...this thread has been very, very helpful...I'll report back on this (hopefully the dealer mechanic knows what he did...I had it installed before I picked up the bike)...thanks guys...

okay...

Checked with the owner of the dealership who remembers doing the install of the zumo on my bike himself...mine was one of the earlier ones sold so he remembers it well. He either ran it through the accessory fuse (in the box) or used the in-line one that came with the zumo. He can't remember which he did, but he said he would NEVER connect it directly to the battery without a fuse...being mine does not go off when the key is taken out, I'll assumed it's the unswitched fuse that was used? (there are two in there?)

I stand corrected...thank you all!
