Drive Belt

Spyder#353

I noticed in Gatlinburg that my drive belt was almost half way off the rear pulley.:yikes: I trained the belt out side of the hotel. ran great all the way home. Yesterday, I noticed the belt was a quarter belt off the pulley.:yikes: I had just backed up about 30' when I drove forward the belt lined itself up almost. In the morning I'm going to lift the rear tire and set it on a jack stand. I will train this belt to travel true in forward and reverse in gear. Has this happened to anyone else?? :chat:

First of all, the difference in reverse verus forward is relatively common... maybe 1/8" in my case.

But... if, in forward, you're shifting the belt alignment, I'd guess you're not tightening the axle nut enough. The spec is 90+ foot/pounds... that's a lot and a cheater bar is necessary in my case.

I jack mine up and align the belt with it in third gear. Then shut it down and tighten the axle nut by pulling the wrench toward me from the bottom of the nut.

:agree: Also note that you should generally ignore what your belt does in reverse. It will change. Either run the Spyder on jack stands or run forward several feet to check, no turns or reverse. After reversing, it will take longer (farther) to run true than if adjusted after moving forward, too. Like Atadude said, check axle tightness. Half a belt is a long way to wander.

If your belt used to be lined up properly then shifted out on its own, you need to get your rear wheel bearings checked and possibly have them look at the transmission output shaft splines and the front pulley. Both dltang's and my Spyders are laid up for these issues. I'm hoping to get to the dealership in the next few days to check out the damage they found for myself.

WOW--Transmission output shaft splines, front pulleys and rear wheel bearings. How many miles do you have on your spyder?? That sounds like the kind of wear one might expect after a 100 thousand miles or so.

Both of 'em?What kinda miles please? How was it discovered?I just read where Victory motorcycles warranty repair cost is $14 per bike.Does anyone know what BRP figures?

When I took the bike apart for chroming. The mileage was about 5,000. I replaced all the bearings nothing went back in used. So I only have 6,000 miles on these bearings. I drove it tonight, put 97 miles on. Belt is on the money. :2thumbs:

Around 25k on each Spyder. The service manager said BRP engineering is looking into the material the front pulley is made out of. The spline shaft is a proven, common design / material across a range of bikes but they think the pulley damage caused the shaft to get damaged also. We should all know that the rear bearings probably will not last for 100,000 miles based on BRPs service schedule and past posts on the bearings.

belt damaged

Well, I've had my Spyder just 2 weeks and been having lot of fun. I finished work early today and took it out for an hour or so. When I stopped for fuel 2 blokes came over to admire it. After a minute or two, one said, hey have you seen ya drive belt? To my dismay, the belt is now in 2 pieces (but still rideable), thanks to a stone stuck in the rear sprocket.

I read elsewhere here that the belt is now covered under warranty in US. I don't know about Australia but am about to find our. The (closest)dealer is 400km away and the retail price for the belt alone is about $750 I believe.

Question 1: Has BRP come up with a belt guard?

2: What and where is the best price for a belt in the US for a spare?

Thanks in advance

WOW-- $750.00 for a belt--sounds totally unreasonable:dontknow:

I just did a quick google search and it list for $245.99 here.

Sorry to hear about your belt......

I don't think belts are covered under warranty--- in the US or elsewhere. They would be just like brake pads---- a consumable.....

:agree: If you belt is moving that much and you're sure you're getting the axle nut tight without movement then I'd check these items. Sounds like you replaced the axle bearings but it could be the housing is loose like what happened to Lamont's.

And some have had issues with the front sprocket getting out of sorts. No harm in checking as any or all of these can affect belt drift.

Not changing the subject of the thread but I want to thank Lamonster for posting the link to the parts fiche. That can be a big help when you are working on things whether you order parts or not. I expect that many of you already have it but, as a relative newcomer to the forum, I did not. Hope they will have one for the RT soon. Thanks

I had a weird wear mark like a small V on my belt around 6000 miles and BRP covered it but a lower belt guard would deffineitly would help :spyder2:

There is already one for the RT. Hit 2010 for the model year in the fiche, ands select your model.

Most decent (higher volume) dealers will have the complete parts fiche available on their website. www.robsperformance.com is where I usually look up my parts.

I was going to suggest the same.
