I know the Spyder certain has its' problems, like most new technologies or machines, etc... But here is my honest question:

*Regardless of weather (pretend snow and black ice were NOT an issue).
*I'm wondering about the reliability of the Spyder, with this thread.

Would you FEEL COMFORTABLE owning a SPYDER as your ONLY vehicle???

To get you to work, get groceries, pay bills, go on a couple over-night riding adventures, short enjoyable city or backroad rides (where dealers are an hour's drive away), etc...

Would you FEEL COMFORTABLE owning a SPYDER as your ONLY vehicle???

This is Michigan. Too many months of snow and ice. I can't even move a motorcycle across my gravel driveway once it ices up. I was rear-ended in my truck a few days ago on an icy overpass. On the Spyder I would have been injured and the Spyder would have been totalled. If I lived in a warmer climate, I might consider it. Not so much a question of comfort, but of safety and practicality.

Thanks for the reply. How about if winter and weather was NOT a factor?

Would you consider it safe and reliable enough, then?

Thanks

:agree:

Spyder is a toy for nice weather riding - not a daily communter here in Michigan.

I hear you. We get our share of the white stuff in winter here also, in Newfoundland.

However, I'm wondering about if current Spyder owners can and would rely on their spyders.

If winter was not a concern for you, and had a Spyder for your only vehicle, would you feel comfortable about it, having to rely on it for everyday things?

Thanks

I pretty much parked my truck when I got my Spyder and trailer setup I use it for all my running around.

I live in west central Texas where we get very little snow and only occasional ice. The temperature this morning was 34 degrees and it's been in the mid 20's the last several days. There's no real problem with riding in this weather if you have decent riding clothes. I've done it many times. And I really admire the riders who ride every day in much colder climates. They're tougher than I am. Even so, if I had only one vehicle, it would be my pickup. It's the most versatile thing I own.

If the dealers would give out loner Spyder's when it's in the shop / and
weather isn't an issue, maybe ? But i find it hard to carry more than a half
dozen 2+4's, So i will still need my truck! [it's a '' hemi'' almost as much fun as my Spyder] :ohyea:

I sold my Porsche 944 soon after getting the Spyder. My husband does have a car, but the Spyder is my primary source of transportation. I can pull a cargo trailer or a utility trailer behind the Spyder that allows me to carry just about anything. Going to the grocery store is easy with the Spyder, don't even need the trailer. I can even use my utility trailer with dog crates attached to it to transport my dogs (3 Boxers) or to pick up lumber or what-not at our local home improvement store (got a weird look the last time I did that). I also use the Spyder to pull two dirt bikes.

We could survive solely, year round, with the Spyder as our only vehicle, if we had to.

My largest complaint would be the cost of maintenance as we regularly put 20K - 25K+ miles a year on our car and that's with splitting some of the traveling on the Spyder and other motorcycles we own. We drive 75 miles a day, 5 days a week, 20 some odd days a month all year long not including vacation travel, weekenend travel, etc. The car is cheaper to maintain than the Spyder.

Lamont, thanks for your reply. You have a great looking setup there. Has it been reliable for you (would you consider the Spyder a Reliable OR Unreliable machine?)

boborgera - thanks for your reply. Loner Spyders??? Have you had many visits to the dealer with your Spyder then?

e.g. Would you guys have any discomfort in coming on long road trips on your Spyder where there are no dealers near by?

thanks for the replies everyone.

I do too much shopping, so I would always need a "normal" vehicle for that. And we have terrible winters here in Chicagoland, so the Spyder wouldn't be good during many winter months.

Other than that, I would ride it constantly!

I've put over 43,000 miles in two years with very few issues. I've been cross country twice on it and would consider it as reliable as any other motorcycle I've owned including my Honda's. I've had no motor issues at all. I did have a wheel bearing/hub go bad at 30K or so but that's no big deal. I am having my dps replaced right now but I could still ride it without it if I had to.

So to answer your question, yes I feel it's very reliable and I could use it as my only transportation if I had to. :doorag:

thee only time i start my truck now it to pull my racecar trailer or to go to home depo. So yes i would use my spyder for my only transpo. nojoke

If I lived in a warmer climate and didn,t have to Trailer my jet ski,s The :spyder2:would be my only vehicle!!!!

I'll ride in almost any kind of weather - except snow/ice, and salty roads. I live just south of Indianapolis, so we get snow/ice and salty roads in the winter, in the summer, Spyder gets many more miles than the car or truck.

I say yes. If I lived somewhere warm I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I would need a trailer for sure. That said, I live in Maine, and I'll always have a 4x4 pickup truck for as long as I do. The Spyder would really suck at towing a 2 place snowmobile trailer :yikes:

I love my Spydee truly but...

Every time I ryde, where ever I end up, I look like something the cat drug in.:gaah:
Don't know how you other lady ryders are able to pull off looking so good at the end of the day...

If I want to go somewhere and get there looking o.k., have to take the car.

Eh, I just put a hat or a do-rag on, I don't care what I look like most of the time. And when I ride into work I just do myself up a little after I get into the office.

The only reason we take the car really is because we have one, but we could live without for the most part.
