• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Big Harley News

Ahhhhh yes..... but for some of the larger among we Spyder riders, Jaybros, that Harley (and Indian} gear is the only gear that fits us. If you are smaller, you can buy smaller Harley gear, or Spyder gear. If you’re big and tall, you can NOT buy Spyder gear, which is pretty short sighted on BRP’s part. I am certainly not above wearing Harley jackets, pants and tshirts, for just that reason (although I’ll definitely buy Indian gear first). ;) (

Pete

I’ve bought gear/clothing at Harley, I’m a whopping 5’11”, 176#, and they had my size all the way to xxl or maybe larger. I think some may be poking fun at some of the Harley riders they have seen tooling around. They come in all different sizes like Spyder riders.

With the world economy going to hell in a handbasket luxury items like Harleys will only get more expensive and less desirable.
Only decent thing they built was the V Rod but that was too much for the faithfull to accept so a self inflicted wound if you ask me.Latest round of cuts is just more of the same crap.
Patriotism doesn't pay the bills innovation and need would though.

Seems an odd strategy to me. Down here the expensive marques like Porsche, BMW, Audi etc. have all introduced cheaper models to our market as a way to introduce newbies to the brand and build brand loyalty. Can am have done this too with the Ryker. No way I could handle a full dress tourer these days unless it has 3 wheels however a smaller displacement model would be a possibility.

When I was beginning my three wheel investigation I looked no farther at Harleys than on the web and I just couldn't see it, and I wanted no part of putting out a lot of bucks for a Wing and then some more for a trike conversion. The old Cow Town video of the Spyder RT compared to a Honda trike conversion sold me. I really wanted something like a Bonneville T120 but it wouldn't satisfy my wife and sure isn't a long distance touring bike that was my first requirement. Still have the urge for a smaller two wheeler but one of those introduced into the garage would be followed by fire and fury the likes of which I've never seen.

Oh, you can do it on a Bonneville. I did it on '71 and '73 Bonnevilles, several round trips of 3,000 to 5,000 miles in the early seventies. You
just can't haul a lot of stuff.

Good on ya! At my age my darn bipap machine now takes up my left saddlebag just for starters and I don't sleep worth a crap without it but my RT is great and I travel light.

So, the 'NEW' CEO wants to change the direction of the company back to the same as the new owners right after the purchase from AMF. Humm - - That has to be a successful move.

H-D, since WWII, has tried many other was of increasing sales:

1.) Buell
2.) MV Agusta
3.) Holiday Rambler Motorhomes
4.) Tomahawk Boats
5.) H-D Gold Carts
6.) Topper Motor Scooter (I saw one when I was about 6 years old. Man, I WANTED that thing!!!)
7.) Hummer small displacement motorcycles (2 stroke)
8.) Aermacchi Harley Davidson small displacement motorcycles (4 stroke) from 50cc to 350cc
9.) H-D 'Penster' trike concept
10.) H-D 'Nova' concept - a true Goldwing competitor

I am sure there are many I have missed. But, there is one common thread in all of thi sfailure:

INCOMPETENT MANAGEMENT!!!!!

Why would anyone expect this 'new direction' be any different.

Regards,
Joe T.

I liked all my previous Harleys but: I LOVED MY V Rod!!! I put 30,000 miles on it between 2003 and 2007. Customized it with Power Commander, 200 mm rear tire, pullback bars, floorboards, and shorter suspension .... due to my short stature. I could light that rear tire up for quite a distance!!

I think the V-Rod engine was designed by Porsche? Definitely not a home-grown Harley product. And it wasn't popular with the older
riders because it didn't sound right.

It was actually a derivitive of the VR 1000 from HD's Superbike racing days.Porsche had some engine involvment from a design point of view but it was still built by HD in USA.

Old guys didn't like it cause it showed how old they were.:sour:

Thanks for the expansion on the motor. I'm a motorcycle guy, but not necessarily a Harley guy. They haven't changed much since the 50's so I've
never paid much attention to the bikes and engines.

Part of me still wants a Harley freewheeler, never rode one though!

Three wheeler? A friend inherited one from his dad, and brought it to me to get it running. I took it out for a few rides when it was finally
running, and no way did that thing interest me in the least. After a half hour on Peggy's Spyder I felt comfortable at 80+ mph, the trike
made me nervous at anything over 55 mph. Thanks, but no thanks.

You haven't missed anything:roflblack:

It is Freewheeler. It's the physically smaller trike, based on the Street Glide style..

Thanks TROOP for the picture! Something about the look of the red freewheeler is classic Harley sweetness! Alas, $30 grand and lots of mechanical quirks and problems quickly set me on course for my spyder f3s. Maybe a poster on my garage wall will be a welcome alternative.

I watched traditional trikes taking the corners on The Dragaon, relatively slowly and still lifting the inside wheel. They
act very much like a sidecar, except they lift a wheel in both corners. :)
