Rear Tire wear.. Some folks get 17,000 miles.. Some get 7,000 miles...

I have never smoked my rear tire. I ride moderate - sometimes winding it out good. But, I don't ride crazy. I check the pressure about weekly - keeping it at 28psi. And, I changed my first rear tire at 11,200 miles. And, as it's looking now, this rear will maybe get a bit more mileage.
Maybe, some of these folks that are getting 15,000+ miles on tire are really getting the tire near bald?! I don't understand. :)

I was well into my rear indicators when I changed the first one. How far do most of you let your tire wear down? Am I being overly cautious, you think?

Greg,

I don't have that number of miles yet, but I will say that with a water dispersing tire, you want to keep some tread on it...the bike is obviously 'rear wheel' drive...good traction is imperative. As I learned from my recent 1.5. hour ride through crazy thunderstorms, tire traction is quite important...I'm very confident with the stock tires. When the time comes to replace my tires, I'm not so sure I'll be going with a car tire...

I change mine out when the tread gets even with the wear indicators, thats about 15 - 16,000 miles. I'm awaiting my third tire to show up now.

Same here. I don't let it go too far. 15,000 on the first one. 18,000 on the second. I pretty much never check the tire pressure on the rear. I do ride a lot twist roads but never do burn outs.

it's all about your or ryder's ryding habit.
my first one was basically bald by 7000 and i got the hint and took it easy on the 2nd one and it lasted 14000. one of ryder in our group had 15k on his and his looked practically new... guess how gently he accelerates^^

Got 8,000 on the rear---- should have changed it at 7,000. Am at 12,000 on the fronts and will need to replace them soon.

The 2 to 1 ratio seems to hold true on the Spyder just like most other bikes--- I'm planning on 7,500 per rear and 15,000 fronts.

Rear Tire

I got 14,000 out of the rear and it was well into the wear bars. Still had tread though. Fronts are probably good for another 5-6M miles. Drive highway to and from work. Check air pressure once/month.

I wanna know what the least miles a person has gotten from a tire???

About 3,500 here on #2 OEM tire... down to the "worst" wear indicator in the center. Not a lot of burn-offs... just twisty riding at speed.

I believe that the OEM distorts at speed... larger diameter in the middle than at rest. That could explain it. But, then again... :D

I only got 6000 miles on my first tire. Don't know how much I could have because it was an early change. Had the bike apart for chroming. Instead of putting back on that tire I installed a new Yokohama. Why install a half used tire only to have to change it in 2 or 3 months. Does anyone need a tire. I can give you a really good price.:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

tires should be replaced at 4/32,3/32 max.thats at the lowest point.
im at 3/32 at 9k,I have a new bfg ready to install....

How does the Yokohama perform? Better traction?

Im at 6800 and probably should replace my tire right about now. I'll be doing some powder coating over the winter, so I'll do the tire then.

The low wear was self inflicted... and will likely get a bunch more wear out of the next one.
