Most male adolescents owe Hugh Hefner a debt of gratitude. I for one, will always hold him in high esteem. Seriously. He was a trend setter in many ways and I don't believe any of them were subtle. While not everyone agreed with all that he espoused, he was recognized as a true revolutionary.

He built an empire and established one of the most widely recognized brands in the world. He was a staunch supporter of free speech, promoted open discussion of sex in all its glory and gave a place for writers and cartoonists, both the famous and the unknown, and some very interesting interviews. While it wasn't always a smooth ride, it was a very interesting one.

I remember my first exposure to Arthur C. Clarke and Shel Silverstein as well as the cartoons of Gahan Wilson. Politics, sports, sex, you name it, it was probably covered in one manner or another.

Another American icon is gone. At least this time it was one who was about thirty years older than me. Far too many are getting uncomfortably close to my age or even younger with increasing frequency. Thank you, Hef, for all that you did.

That photo reminds me of a story a mortician told me one time. A couple died in a car from monoxide poisoning. He was still in the saddle. The hardest part of it all was telling the man's wife about her husband's death!

I once responded to a sudden death, suspected heart attack. When I arrived it was our police dept's police surgeon (married) at the home of his medical secretary. He was quite dead, in a half-sitting posture on her sofa. Her story was he came over to discuss work related matters. I noticed his shirt was buttoned crookedly and his slip-on shoes were on the wrong feet! He was married, and we didn't blab about what we were quite certain was the real story.

I crossed paths with her once in a casino in Atlantic City. She was wearing a brilliant white tennis mini skirt outfit and she didn't walk or strut, she absolutely glided across the floor of that casino. I, and many others, were absolutely mesmerized. She is VERY short.
