Trial run camping trip with the dogs

Jane and I want to be able to do extended motorcycle trips with the dogs. We got a pet trailer for them and wanted to see if camping along the way was going to be a viable option. So this past weekend we took 3 days to travel down to Huntington State Park.

Jane drove the Spyder (her first ever real trip doing so) pulling the pet trailer and I drove the Yamaha pulling a cargo trailer. We had elevation changes between 5k to 9.6k feet and temp variations on the trip from 60 to 90 degrees. All went well, although sleeping on the ground was a bit of a challenge for me anyway.

Most amazing to me, both bikes averaged over 40mpg and ran flawlessly. So, now we are looking forward to our next extended trip and eventually a circumnavigation of the lower 48.

We were something of a novelty wherever we went. Both the Spyder and the pet trailer generated a lot of interest and smiles.

I'm too old for sleeping on the ground but would rather camp than hotel it and we like to take our dog with us, what I settled for and has worked really well is the aspen tent trailer with a queen size bed and memory foam mattress topper. The spyder handles it fine and we have logged over 30,000 miles with this combination. I even have room for a porti potty for my bride so she don't have to wander around the campground at night scaring off the critters.

She has always loved riding on our bikes, and once again: she probably got the most attention up there!

I miss the camping, but for sure not the sleeping on the ground. Can't do that any more. Now, its travel and let the hotel/motel staff make the beds and clean the rooms. Looks like your well equipped. My advice, enjoy it as much as you can--while you can. :yes:

The cots should work. When we went canoe tripping we had the blow up mats (the one inch or so thick variety, great for youthful backs and light weight for packs). Cots keep you off the ground and there is something about the back being away from the cold dampness that definitely helps. Let us know how the new camping farkle works. :yes:

To those of you who camp with your dogs: do they sleep in your tent (or tent-trailer) with you? Or in their trailer?

Just curious. I'm thinking a large dog or two wouldn't leave a lot of room for the people!

We have 2 small (24#) dogs; they sleep with us wherever it is. For us, every night is a 2 dog night. This weekend, we used a backpacking tent so yeah it was pretty cramped.

The trailer has plenty of ventilation (2 roof vents, 3 sliding windows) when moving. If we stop for any length of time (i.e. over 5 minutes) we take them out for exercise, food, water, etc. The trailer actually provides shade and they are better off in there than exposed to the desert sun.
