Replacing Rear Speakers

Since J&M are not taking orders for replacing the rear or front speakers I have been on the hunt to replace all four. I decided to go with the JBL GTO 529's. By the way they are cheaper than J&M.

The original rear speakers are 4.25". I decided I wanted to replace those with 5.25". The fronts are 5.25 so that is not a problem.

First thing was removing the tupperware. If you are not sure check out Fineless Bob's video for helpful tips. Next up was taking the rear speakers and removing the original speakers and then surgery. I used a dremel tool to make the opening 4 5/8ths. Basically you are removing about half an inch of the plastic. You can make yourself a templet out of cardboard then trace it out on the bike. The take a few deep breaths and start cutting. You will have to cut off one of the tabs of the new speakers in order for it to fit.

You can see the results for yourself in the pics below.

Now I am in the process of making a pigtail adapter from the original speaker wiring to fit the new JBL's. It appears the wiring that BRP used is about 16ga??

Hope this helps someone who is thinking of doing this themselves. It really is not that hard of a project to accomplish.

JBL SPEAKER SWAP

Glad you got the nerve to do this, I've been telling folks here for a couple of years it was doable .....although the 528's would have been a better choice, imho............nice Pics :thumbup::thumbup:..... Mike

JBL - SPEAKER - SWAP

The speakers I have recommended for this project ( for a couple of reasons ) are the GTO 528 model ...... they are hard to find, but I just checked E-bay there are two sellers items # 142245542242 $ 75.95 delivered & # 122231788210 $79.94 delivered ...... If you are considering this MAJOR improvement in sound at a bargain price ..... jump on this ...... Mike  ............. PS - for an even better deal type in - JBL gto 508c , there are a couple sets available ( ask for free shipping first ) for less than $100.... the orig. price on these was $270.00 ......I have a pair and they are WAY BETTER then the 528's and fit also .....:firstplace::b2b:

Mike, are you recommending the JBL GTO508C's both front and back? No amp needed with these? this would be for my otherwise stock 2013 RTL.[h=1][/h]

Mike, are you recommending the JBL GTO508C's both front and back? No amp needed with these? this would be for my otherwise stock 2013 RTL.
I only used them in the rear because I was happy with the 528's I already had in the front ..... They replaced my JBL 428's ( 4" ) I had swapped into the rear earlier ......... There is room in the rear for the x-tra speaker & crossover in the OEM housing ( sorry no pics ). You could also do the front ( w/508c's ), with or without the x-tra speaker. I couldn't tell from DJF's pics if He cut a slot for the rear speaker metal edge to fit inside the plastic ribs in the rear housing .... it makes more room for them and install fits better .... it's also easy to do ....... the 508c's also has a 4 5/8 hole .......PS go to the Spyder MODs forum look on pg. #2 - Laura's Mods ..... She posted pics - video's - and sound ....... PPS, this system works fantastic with the OEM radio/amp .... PPPS, the cones on these JBL's are made of MYLAR which is waterproof ( but not the newer 529's )........ good luck ..... Mike

Finally found some time to get some wind therapy and see exactly what those JBL's came out like. Much better than the stock for sure! You can actually hear the back speakers since I went up to a 5.25 on the rear speakers. Overall I think it's worth the upgrade. Not that hard to do if you take your time.

Oh and you will also need some different connectors if you upgrade. For the JBL's I went with .187's for the positive side and .110 for the negative side. I found them at O'Riley Auto parts. Apparently BRP uses some crazy size connectors for the stock speakers.
