Really bad gasket

I had a pretty good leak on the right side of the Spyder where the two pipes go into one. I pulled the gasket and now I see why.:yikes:

I didn't have a new gasket so I wrapped this one with that alumn. tape and put some high temp sealer on it and no more leak. :doorag:

Well I've only got 4k on mine and it appears that I'm having the same problem. Haven't pulled the gasket yet, that's on the list for tonight, but I've got a leak coming from there and my foot is getting noticeably warmer. The good news is that dealers now have the new replacement gasket in stock, I just ordered one and should have it by Friday.

I discovered I have this same problem. Mine replacement gasket won't be in until next week. I think this may be part of my problem with heat on the seat and also the backfiring problem I had when I was in Gatlinburg when the spyder was running 5 bars.

Lamonster...

Can you start a thread for all recalls/problems with the spyders so that we can address them with the dealers when we get service...perhaps catch the problems before they really become problems...

Thanks...

Did this bad gasket cause a rattling like a tin can. Especially when the engine is cold. And gets a little better when hot. Anybody else have this happen??:dontknow:

Have you checked your bolts on the exhaust bracket? I had the same sound and it was the bracket rattling. When it gets hot, the bolts expand and the sound isn't as loud! Tightened all of the bolts and the sound went away.

Suggestion for the exhaust seal problem

Need a exhaust seal quick... go to you local hardware store or plumber and secure a piece of copper pipe. Cut a piece to length. If you can't get one the same diameter you can split the pipe take a small section out then rejoin it back together with silver solder. This will stand up to the vibration and heat much better than the gaskets shown in pictures on this thread.

The copper is soft and will compress making a good durable seal.

I haven't looked under there yet but could it be possible the rubber isolator on the collector manifold needs a little help with the weight of the collector and viberation. A stainless spring might help absorb some of this problem. I'm looking at the diagram/schematic from the shop manual. May not be worth anything but it is possibility. I always keep the "kiss" principle in mind.

I believe this gasket is a time change item at 15 k miles but may be wrong.

I am on my third one and it is leaking bad again. I am a long way from home and it probably won't get fixed until I get back. It causes the engine to run rough in the 4,000 rpm range when it is hot and I will just live with it.

This part definitely needs a redesign.

I had the new gaskets installed, And still have the rattling. But gets better after getting hot just like the original gaskets. :gaah::spyder: :gaah:

Honda muffler gasket / seal

I don't have the measurements of the spyder gasket but I'm sure someone on this forum has them. Here is the measurements for the GL1800 muffler gasket. AS you will see in the picture it appears to be very simular to the spyder gasket.

I had the stock ones measured at 1.910" and 1.710". Those measurements are right on the mark. The Japanese gaskets appear to be more robust... more screen, less sealant. The BRP appears to me a lot of sealant (which burns off/blows out) and much less screen.

Good find! This is the gasket where the slip-on goes onto the headers, right? Number 22 on the link? If so, I'll order a few of them.

Which gasket confusion

I thought I read a recent thread stating the exhaust gaskets from a GSXR 1000 worked :dontknow: or was that just because of your new twin cans?

Just the cans. The gaskets were too small. There are Kawa gaskets that fit but Sopher (the finder) didn't get the part number. Yamaha Warrior gaskets have also been ruled out by me.

I suspect, over time, that the BRP gaskets will be changed to be more like the Japanese gaskets. In the mean time, I'm going to order about four of the GL1800's.
