• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. I Guess They Shouldn't Have Cut A Tunnel Through It.

Sad news...

But look how long it lasted. Cutting the tunnel did not affect the life of the tree but nothing lasts forever. Does anyone know when the tunnel was cut ..? Have seen 30's era cars in the tunnel.. have seen many fallen sequoias that did not get that old...

Footnote....estimated to be 1,000 years old the tunnel was cut in 1880 in a burn scar at the base of the tree so tourists could drive thru going to the hotel...

Fair enough, it lasted a LONG time after the deed was done, but I will NEVER believe "...cutting the tunnel did not affect the life of the tree..."

WRONG TREE

Hi Dave here,
The tree that you drive through is alive and well and still standing, it is located
about 250 miles northwest of this one that fell at Big Trees, the drive through tree is in
Legget CA. up hwy 101. the one that fell is about 40 miles from me in Calaveras county
you could not drive through this one for many many years you could go on a marked trail
about 1 1/2 miles and walk through it..
The tunnel was cut through this tree in 1881, they were not thinking anything about it other than
"Damn" that is a big tree

That poor tree has been hanging on by a thread for a long time. The amazing thing is that it lasted as long as it did. I've driven through it several times. Pretty impressive.

You can have one of my drive throughs for your bucket list if you like.

Not to be confused with the one Dave commented on above.
