Cost per mile for our addiction..reflection

Just got thinking about how much we like to ride and the cost of our toys and since I'm OC and cheap I jotted down a quick table to see what my addiction is costing me just in up front cost. The nine rides we've enjoyed and their cost and miles ridden read thusly...

Used Yamaha 750 - rode about 10,000 miles if I recall - $3600 for a cost of 36 cents per mile

2 Honda 750'S 1 new, 1 used 50,000 miles about $10,000 net bought-sold 20 cents per mile

2 Harleys both used 25,000 miles rode 5,000 net bought-sold 20 cents per mile

2 Can-Am Spyder RT's new 116,000 miles 26,000 bought-PV 23 cents per mile

What does this tell me?? Like Bob says.... RIDE MORE... WORRY LESS!!

If I only looked at the purchase price my RT limited cost me 0 per mile. That includes what I paid for the sway bar and shock adjusters.

:D Sam,
Would you like to give me a hand, when it comes time to purchase my next car? :D

Bob

I got lucky, I bought it CHEAP last fall rode it about 500 miles and sold it for what I had in it. This doesn't include sales tax, reg, property tax, gas or insurance.

Interesting set of numbers and glad to see :spyder2: was not the highest.

I am a number cruncher also. Did not want to go there though. Having owned five of these babies, I know I have spent upwards of :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes: to keep me in gas, oil, farkles, minor repairs, and wind therapy. I will enjoy the blissfulness of not knowing the exact amount. The money is already gone, the :ani29::spyder2:'s are free and clear. I look at it now as a "sunk" cost. :roflblack::roflblack: It's all uphill/downhill from here.

My biggest money pit was my 2010 Harley Night Rod. 4441 miles and it cost me $2.50 per mile, again no taxes, insurance, reg or gas. Some days you bite the bear and some days the bear bites you.

Learned after the Harleys to buy used or left overs.

When it comes to toys, I've decided that it's not what I've got in them that's important; it's what I get out of them, that really matters! :2thumbs:

As I see it...

according to this method...the solution is to keep ryding till your cost is "0".....:roflblack::roflblack: then go for the reverse mortgage...:hun:

We are a two Spyder family. When we ride through a pine forested road my wife always says on the headset. "Take a deep breath. Feel the wind. Smell the air. That's the years of stress going away." The price of our bikes per mile? It doesn't matter. I can't replace the rewards. ..... Priceless!!!

Buy Used and Ride, Ride, Ride....

Yep, as far as the buy-sold cost, made some good deals on the Harleys, but the maintenance on the Hondas was the cheapest. I guess I could see my riding as throwing out a quarter from my pocket for every mile I ride, but that would take all the fun out of it:clap::clap::clap:

I guess we could all ride scooters if $$$ was a concern. Just my guess but I'd bet that Spyder owners are probably in the decent income bracket.

Hi tjsox,

Re: It doesn't matter. I can't replace the rewards. ..... Priceless!!!

^^^^^ This. I bought this thing to have fun with, not to save money. Now, that does not mean I do not pay attention to costs.

It's my toy, so there.

after looking at the cost from 1993 to 2010 (computers are good for that kind of stuff) .......

I can relate to that. I developed a taste for those high priced sticks and would buy them from Thompson and the "other" (cant remember their name) on a monthly basis. $5.00 plus per stick most of the time. I did that from mid 90's to 2010. When I moved to my new home while sitting on the porch I thought to myself--self, why are you spending all this money, just to burn it up? I quit cold turkey and have never looked back. Still have the :ani29::spyder2: though, and they will have to pry my cold, dead hands off those handlebars.
