• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Ordered a new battery (Yuasa YTX24HL-BS)

The manual says to have the battery swapped only by a dealer, but it seems like a simple job. I've replaced the battery on numerous cars, boats and other motorcycles and the hardest part is getting add-on connectors on those tiny terminals.

Am I missing something or is this as straightforward as I'm expecting? My guess this is along the lines of the warnings about only using a BRP trailer hitch and trailer, only have the oil changed by a dealer, etc.

Well....

With the proper steps it is no problem doing it yourself. Their fear is that you don't do it righ and short something out. I'm sure you know the proper order for removing the ground and positive cables on removal and installation. For those that don't...on removal ground (Black) cable first then positive (Red) on installation Positive cable (Red) first and ground (Black) last. Make sure the ground cable, when not connected, is not touching any metal parts. I like to wrap the end in electrical tape to avoid this...

BATTERY BOLTS

...Since you will be doing this....get some STAR washers, the type with the teeth on the inside of the ring ( they work better ) and put them on your Batt Bolts....Because then they will never loosen by themselves ....NOT EVER...........Mike

Since the OP's battery is mounted in the upright position and not like yours on it's side. It's not really an issue.

Its' not about leaking acid. It's about the matt getting soaked properly and give the battery good life.
My battery lost cranking power after 3 months and I did not have leaking acid.
You have to cycle these the right way so the matts absorb evenly and properly.

So is the correct model number Yuasa YT24HL? (without the -BS)

Yuasa YTX24HL

-BS is the same battery but not filled and cycled at the factory. It is filled when it is shipped by the seller.

Yuasa even has a document telling you the difference between factory activated vs Bottle filled ad the importance of cycling it before use.
They recommend using a Yuasa charger to activate the battery due to the restricted charge rate!
I used a standard 3 cycle charger when I got my BS battery and this may be the reason it only lasted about 3 months.

I have to find the "service Tech Tip" but I saw it posted here once.

Can-AM told dealers not to use the -BS battery.

Also read this older post about it here:

Then for the facts straight from the horses mouth.... Go read the activation process on Yuasa's own web site.
They specifically say to use their charger as it charges at a lower rate than most chargers made for a lead acid battery.
You cannot just take a -BS and stick it in the Spyder. It has to be properly activated.

My experience is exactly that too! My -BS lasted all of about 3 months as I used a lead acid 3 stage charger. Well that's my take on it.

My Factory activated battery is doing fine now for months.

Bob,
Why don't you take a look at a 2013 (or later) RT manual on BRP's website...
They list the "BS" battery as the one to use; hat's no BS! :D

Last comment.

This convo came up on Facebook a month or so ago.
A dealer said he uses -BS but stressed the activation process is critical to a good life of the battery.

Fill and let sit for the required time (24 hours as I recall).
SLOW charge it... Not fast. If you don't have a charger that you can control the charge forget it!

Now he also said if the seller fills it, WHO KNOWS how they activated it if at all! If they fill it and ship it right away without letting it sit upright for the required time, you will get a crappy battery.

Due to my experience with a -BS.... I won't be using one again. Well unless I fill it myself and use a proper charger.

Bob, I know that! But your not getting the point of the -BS. If a dealer fills it and charges it properly FINE!
If not... good luck!
