Earplugs while riding spyder

You know, it is interesting that everyone keeps talking about the disposables being so cheap. Well, these aren't all that expensive for the reusables either. The ones that I really like the best I found at the Earplug Superstore for $2.95 a pair or a 10 pack for $18.95 and since they are reusable, I guess that makes them a very good deal.

My second choice plugs, the E.A.R. Ultra fits are only $1.95 a pair or a 10 pack for $17.95. So basically cost is not a factor here.

So Mike, are you riding anywhere this weekend? I don't know what are plans are but if it is nice, I wouldn't mind a short journey. I was going to see if Rando and Bonnie wanted to go out for a ride and get Bonnie used to some group sypder rides. I will let you know. I have to check with Brian as well.

You can reuse the 'disposable' ones until they don't wanna work anymore...being I actually clean my ears more than once a year, I can get many uses out of them...just put them back into the little baggie they come in...no problem with that!

Custom-made earplugs

I have had a couple pairs (lost one in move) of custom, fitted earplugs made at gun shows in Texas, and they have worked great. Takes about 10 minutes and cost about $35. If you are really that into the music, they can be made with speakers in them, but I have not tried that. Genetics, motorcycles and guns (before ear plugs) have done a job on my hearing, so I am trying to keep what's left.

I think hearing protection is a good idea, but when I need it on the express way and on long rides, I use my in-ear headphones. So I have both the isolation and the music.

When I worked in a refinery, ear plugs were mandatory and that is a excellent comparison you did dltang. And you are right, it is a very personal choice as to what works and feels good. Also, on what is the most cost effective approach, it is what works for you.

Thanks for the earplug Website, Deb. The old Wilson - small silicone plugs that I like are no longer sold, and I am down to my last pair. Looks like there are some possibilities here, maybe even the mold-it-yourself variety. I have a terrible time with fit. Have to roll up the foam ones so small and insert at such an extreme angle that they often don't unroll, becoming ineffective and eventually falling out. There are as many varieties of ears out there as there are faces! Nice to find a place with a wide selection.

I have significant loss at least partly from riding 40+ years without ear plugs. Stopped to see Now Hear This at a local bike show and she made custom plugs for both of us. We upgraded a couple years ago to speaker-plugs. We don't leave home without 'em. mine also work great when using noisy power tools.

i like the resuseable ones with stems too..i HATE the roll up foam disposable...never stay in my ears..and yes as far as im concerned, they are the cheapest way to go

As a long time sufferer of Tinnitus, I always use "Hearos" brand, 33 dBa reduction, available at drug stores and Walmart, the package comes with a small plastic container that holds two and keeps them clean.


Ear plus are also handy for concerts and when the spouse plays CW music in the car on long road trips. :gaah:

I wear ear plugs just riding to work, about a 15 min. ride. It is so important to wear hearing protection while doing a lot of things for more than 20 min. at a time(mowing lawn, running a chain saw, vacuuming). I love listening to music and watching movies with the great sound that is produced. Without good hearing I would not be able to hear the delicate sounds in music or movies. Everyone hears the guitar and drums, the machine guns and explosions. I want to hear it all.
I use the yellow foam plugs, not because they're cheap but because they work for me and have a great noise reduction rating. I'm 54 years young and still have good hearing. The only time I notice a little hearing loss is when my wife speaks to me, go figure.

They come to your work or residence, take a mold and voila.....they have many models depending on your choice, you can also get them to adjust for free in the first 3 months and will keep the mold for 5 years if you want another set. I tried earplugs for a time, years ago. I gave it up from concern about possible contamination caused by unclean hands when inserting the earplugs, or reinserting them. When I am on the road all day, I am anything but clean.

Deb: Have you considered this aspect of the use of earplugs?

If that was a problem, I'd be dead many times over. Don't Worry.

This thread reminded me to add ear plugs to my list of stuff to take on our cross-country trip in September. Around town I don't wear them, but if I am going to be riding for more than 45 minutes or so I do like the wear them. I also do not like the foam ones either, but that's all I've got now. I am going to probably order that trial pack off that website and try some different options. Thanks for that Deb! :2thumbs:

Bimjo, I would have liked to try some of the Silent Ears, they look comfortable and have great review. Right now I am pretty happy with what I have found though.

Wearin' 'em is more important than which ones ya wear, as long as they fit properly.

I wear them when I get on freeway most of the time. Only thing is when ryde again without them spyder sounds crappy. When I ryde with them all I hear is the deep sound of muffler but take them off, I hear all the clanking and clunking of engine itself again

BTW, I'm not sure there is much of the body that is dirtier than your ears. As long as you don't have a punctured ear drum, and the skin is intact, the ear should be no more prone to external infection than the rest of your nooks and crannies. Reasonably clean, but not sterile, seems to work fine. I have never had an ear infection or irritation in many many years of riding with earplugs.
