• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

RT being remodeled by the mice

So I rode the other day and noticed that my right blinkers were not working. The light in the dash worked but neither the front or the back blinkers worked. I checked the fuses and everything there looked ok. That same day I was cleaning out the shed where I store my RT and in the box where I keep my original seat, I found a family of mice living in the box. Needless to say, they don't live there any more.

I was pretty sure that the mice were the cause of the blinkers not working so I made an appointment with the dealer (Metro Harley, CanAm and Suzuki in Cedar Rapids, IA) to have them look at it. I rode the bike 50 miles to the shop in 40 degree weather. It really wasn't that bad but I did dress for it. Well the mechanic confirmed my suspicions, the mice were in the bike and they chewed up the wiring harness behind the dash. The mechanic said it was lucky that I even made to the dealer. So now I need a new wiring harness and the mice also chewed up one of the wires for my HID lights I have installed.

On top of all this, I'm having my knee replaced tomorrow so my riding season is over. Metro will be ordering a new wire harness and fixing the RT and they are going to deliver the RT to my house 50 miles away when it's done since I won't be able to ride for a while yet. The other nice thing was Metro also gave me a ride home today. It just goes to show that having a good dealer like Metro goes a long way when riding a Spyder.

I'm also going to look for something to keep the mice out of the Spyder when I get it back. Any suggestions?

Have a great day!

Tony

Bummer..!!

about the mice...:banghead: they do like the colorful wires. Good luck with the replacement and don't feel to bad there are many putting it up for the season...

Downey dryer sheets. They are cheap and super effective. We tuck them all over our snowmobiles when we store them and never have issues. Couple in the exhaust, around the counsel, tucked in the seats, rear storage area, and engine compartment.

Good luck with the knee, my wife had her second one done this spring, she was riding with me by late July so you should be back in no time.

Yes on the cab fresh and the dryer sheets.

Use the dryer sheets in motor home for winter storage and work great:yes:

+1 on the dryer sheets, plus lots of Decon. Good luck with the knee, I've had both mine done, plus a hip (need the other done) and one ankle plus a thumb joint. Getting old isn't for the faint of heart.

the suggestion about Moth balls is good.
the suggestion about a hungry cat is good.
After having lost an ECU and an O2 sensor in a car, I learned
the reason the rodents like our modern harness' is because
much of our insulation is made from CORN, and the current in our wires
generates enough heat to emit a tiny "corn odor" that draws mice like a Pied Piper.

Please throw another vote on the "Dryer sheet" pile...
I also do NOT cover my bike during storage. All kinds of critters prefer dark and quiet places...
I prefer to leave the bike open and uncovered... dust washes off easily in the Springtime!

Good Luck with your impending surgery!

I STORE MY RT IN A CLOSED GARAGE, BUT THE MICE USED TO BUILD NESTS UNDER THE SEAT.
To keep them out of the entire garage, where the riding lawnmower and ATV are also stored, I use MOTH BALLS. Plastic "butter cups" work great for containers, and I put one at each side of the garage door, and one under the RT. The result? NO MORE MICE! Of course, they also kill the "creepy-crawlies" that used to live there.
Try it. IT WORKS!

I had that problem with a riding lawn mower that I kept in a storage building. I puchased some Decon, and never had another problem. Now I put a little out everytime I mow the surrounding hay fields.
I keep the spyder in a garage beneath my office, but I do have someone to stand guard in case a mice tries to come in.

Be careful using Decon with pets around... Especially dogs, they will try to eat dead mice and will be poisoned also.. I know everyone is careful not to let your pets get into it but eating the mice will do it too..

VERY GOOD ADVICE!!

Keep your pets away from Decon, and it's victims!!
