A Zumo 660 puzzle

As many of you know, the '13 ST Ltd's came with a Zumo 660 GPS.

Recently, I subscribed to a bike mag that offers GPS routes for download to their subscribers, in the GPX format that the 660 requires. I have downloaded a couple of them to my laptop and have, based on the Zumo instruction manual, copied and pasted them to the 8GB chip residing in the Zumo.

However the Zumo can't seem to find the chip to identify the files so I can use them. The only reference I can find in the book is on page 27 which instructs the downloading process. What am I missing?????? When I use, My data > Import data, I get only a couple of routes I have created by other means. I must be missing something in front of my nose but can't see it. Someone please point me in the right direction.

Call Garmin at: 800-800-1020, select option 1, then option 2. They are great to work with and will help you resolve the problems. DON'T CALL ON MONDAYS, the hold time is terrible.

I agree ... I couldn't get the route transfer done following all the written instructions but the tech walked me through it in short order..

Often there is no need for added memery on paved road routes.

Myself, I would try the Garmin Mapinstall program and load it directly on the Garmin.

I have bad similar troubles. Often Garmin protocols are vague or assume you are very well versed in the loading shortcomings.

FWIW, I easily got all parts of Ireland we travelled into a Nuvi without extra memory and on an ETrex Vista CX did a buge topo, roads and some trails without added memory.

Try Map Install for pre generated maps. Worked best for me. Hope it will take a route for you.

Download garmin basecamp to your computer then connect the 660 via usb using the hub in the battery compartment and you can transfer routes to the 660.

Myself, I have not had good results with BaseCamp. I know people use it, just always comes up short for me. The map install program seems more direct with less fluff for doing uploads if no extra stuff is needed.

Open Street Maps is pretty cool for those without lifetime maps from Garmin. Learning curve on that is steep also, but rewarding

Garmin Route

I decided to try it for myself. I opened Base Camp (I know many don't like it; it's hard to use . . .) and did a drag and drop from my desktop to the upper left hand box. It loaded instantly and is ready to be downloaded to my 660. In Base Camp I can also change the route if I want to.

I recently was helping a friend with some Garmin GPX data. Basically Holy Grail off road trails. For some reason, Basecamp wanted to share the routes. Obviously this was not shared.

Lately, Garmin Map Install has been the easy no frills way to drop stuff into the Garmin for me.

Google Earth is a neat tool also. Map My Ride has it's place, but is not so keen on sharing unless you pay.

Ironically, so much technology and often I just use it to view in Google Earth to see how it all looks.

I connect my Zumo 660 to the PC, and open File Explorer. I drag the .gpx to the POI folder in my Zumo 660. After disconnecting, and I power up the ZUMO, it tells me that new data has been found and asks if I want to import it. When I say "yes" it gives a choice of importing as a route or waypoints (terminology my not be 100%, but it is similar) and I select "route" - from then on, it is in my custom routes, until I delete it. I don't leave routes there permanently because the memory is limited.

Want to thank all who posted. Specially Ravseren, I called and they walked me through it. That Zumo sure handles files in a primitive manner but as long as I know how it works, we can comply. We get our first test of the actual file tomorrow. Rainy and gloomy today. Off to Mt. Rainier tomorrow.
