RPM range for best MPG and Gear

What are you keeping your :spyder2: rpm at when cruising for best MPG.

My experiment so far has found 5th gear is good to 70 mph before changing to 6th gear for best mpg. Lower speeds I am running 3rd or 4th gear and noticed an improvement in MPG.

Closer to 39-40 mpg now..

Seems like the Spyder likes higher RPM range.

Update the 1330 engine

sounds like you found a good place to be. Being an RT 2014 that is where your mileage should be. You all cruise at lower rpms than us twin folks but I just ryde and fill up when the light comes on. Keep her there and enjoy the ryde...:yes::yes:hyea:

990: Shift rpms at 5000 - 5500. Keep it in that operation range. We usually use 5th gear at 60 plus mph.

1330: Shift rpms at 3000 - 3500. It will take sixth gear at 50 and up. Plenty of torque in any gear to get up and go. If you really need to punch it, drop it down one gear and hit it.

Your RT is geared about 10% higher than my F3, so YMMV.

This week I did two 210 mile trips. The trips were mostly steady-state cruising, anywhere from 45 MPH to 70 MPH. Both trips were the exact same loop route, same temperature, same humidity and same time of day. I use 93 octane ethanol-free fuel. On trip one I used sixth gear for cruising any time I was at 45 MPH or more. On trip two I used fifth gear any time I was at 45 MPH or more. I got 39.4 MPG on the first trip and 36.6 MPG on the second trip. So just lowering the engine RPM at cruise speeds is worth 3 MPG.

Yep I been riding most of the time in 6th gear at hwy speeds but the MPG I felt could get better. Heck my car gets better gas mileage that the :spyder2: :shocked:
But wanted to see how the engine handled the higher RPM and how it affected the MPG..

And what is KISS style??:dontknow:

My experience in ECO MPG was no different when riding in 6th gear and normal mode but next outing I may try eco in 5th gear..:yikes:

I was avg 32 -35 at hwy speeds in 6th gear until my recent experiment.

Don't have that 6th but cruise about 6000 rpms 5th gear and average 33 mpg on a twin...you are at 40 that's great. ..

I am so use to lugging the Harley engine :yikes: versus the Spyder 1330 hyea:.. I was at around 35-3700 rpm in 5th gear and it was smooth.

An acronym for Keep It Simple Stupid--not calling anyone stupid here though--that's just the way the acronym goes. :roflblack: There have been some posts for shift rpm's that use a different suggested rpm for each and every gear. To complicated for me and I go by sound and feel, the KISS numbers seem to fall into place. And yes, I have wound out both flavors of engines a few times. Not enough to have an effect on my mileage though.
